New York City officer Nelson wants to use state-of-art methods to track down a fugitive Indian criminal (played by former football star Joe Kapp) who is hiding out on California's Mount Shasta. Local rancher/sheriff Parker wants to handle the case on his own, since his son (Clay O'Brien) is the fugitive's hostage. The rival authority figures eventually come to the "united we stand" understanding in trailing their quarry. Sam Peckinpah eschews his slow-motion bullet ballets for this quiet character study of ex-rodeo cowboy turned drifter Junior Bonner (Steve McQueen), who returns home to Arizona to reconcile with the family he hasn't seen in years. Bonner is shocked to see that the solid family he was hoping to come back to is breaking apart. His parents, Ace (Robert Preston) and Elvira (Ida Lupino), have separated, and his brother Curley (Joe Don Baker) has turned into a heartless real estate tycoon, parceling off sections of his parent's land for quick money. With nowhere to turn and nowhere to run, Bonner has to face himself and try to find a way to regain his self-respect. They dream of better days--possibly retiring to some island paradise--but they never put any money in the bank because they spend it all on booze and girls. They think their no-dough days are done until they acquire a wild drunkard horse which they enter in a bucking contest--no one can ride the wild, hiccupping nag. In the first episode of a two-part story, Jason (Chuck Connors) intervenes when ruthless cattle baron Aaron Shields (Gary Merrill) orders the flogging of Kolyan (Nico Minardos), the leader of a gypsy tribe. This action earns Jason the undying hatred of Shields, but has a completely different effect on Shields' daughter Robin (Ahna Capri). In this western, an idealistic and naive rookie cavalry officer is assigned to work with a cruel captain. He immediately gets on the crabby captain's bad side by trying to restart an affair with his ex-sweetheart. The woman is engaged to another who ends up getting killed by the Indians. This rookie, blaming himself for distracting the slain officer with his overtures to the officer's fiance, volunteers to act as a decoy to lure the renegade Apaches into a trap. It works, but many soldiers die. After the skirmish, the rookie has become a seasoned officer prepared to take his duties seriously. This heartwarming tale chronicles the friendship between a young Texas girl and her pet calf, which she won at the county fair. When the girl is stricken with polio it is caring for the animal that keeps her strong. Later she enters her beloved pet in the Chicago International Exposition. The heifer wins and the girl is elated until she learns that her cow will be auctioned off and prepared for the slaughterhouse. Fortunately a kindly meat packer intervenes, and girl and bovine are happily reunited. Will Rogers Jr. follows in the cinematic footsteps of his famous father in the evenly-paced western Wild Heritage. Rogers is cast as a frontier judge, given to his own special, down-to-earth brand of jurisprudence. In truth, however, Will Jr's role is a subordinate one; most of the film's running time concerns two families heading westward by covered wagon. When rustlers attack, it is the sons of the respective families who emerge as the heroes. Noted Western director Budd Boetticher helmed this contemporary cowboy story. Tom Moody (John Lund) is a champion rodeo rider who sees real potential in newcomer Bart Eaton (Scott Brady). However, while Bart may have a knack for riding a bull, he's not much for loyalty, and he betrays his mentor by stealing Tom's girlfriend, Judy Bream (Joyce Holden). Tom wallows in self-pity until the death of his buddy Dan Bream (Chill Wills), a rodeo clown, forces him to rethink his life.
