Kaspar Rostrup's drama is a portrait of a marriage told from the husband's viewpoint. Told in flashbacks, the film examines both the couple's newlywed years and the twilight of their lives together, as well as all of the good and bad times in between. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Frankenstein meets Big in this well-made thriller created for the computer generation (the film's subtitle is Password to Life). A dying physician (Ulf Pilgaard) changes bodies with a healthy but shy and socially inept teenager (Morten Schaffalitzky), who then spends the remainder of the film attempting to convince his dubious friends to help him get his body back. The film features comedian Ulf Pilgaard in a rare serious role (in Nattevagten [1994] he did his mad doctor bit so well that he won the Danish equivalent of the Oscar). Directed by actor Jørn Faurschou , Firelight Veins rather successfully straddles the fence between teenage angst melodrama and action-packed science fiction. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi

Based on the 1932 novel Mendel Philipsen and Son by Henri Nathansen, Sofie was adapted for the screen by celebrated actress Liv Ullmann, making her directorial debut. Beginning in Copenhagen during the late 1880s, Sofie (Karen-Lise Mynster) is a devoted Jewish daughter who falls in love with the Gentile painter Hojby (Jesper Christensen). Her parents, Semmy (Erland Josephson) and Frederikke (Ghita Nørby), don't approve of the relationship, so they encourage her to marry her mentally ill cousin, a Swedish shopkeeper named Jonas (Torben Zeller). She gives birth to a son, but their already loveless marriage becomes further complicated when Sofie develops an interest in her brother-in-law Gottleib (Stig Hoffmeyer). Jonas is inconsolable after the death of his mother (Kirsten Rolffes), so much so that Sofie has him institutionalized and takes over his business. Years later, Sofie returns to Copenhagen with her son to help her aging parents and attend an auction where she reunites with Hojby. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

The title of this Danish drama translates roughly to Youth at Play. But there's nothing playful or lighthearted in this story of two teenagers from broken homes. Despite the domestic problems all around him, the young hero and heroine fall in love. The narrative is framed in the form of a lecture on sexual relations, an ironic counterpart to the essential morality of the two protagonists. The influence of western culture is underlined by the film's constant references to American films and popular music. Ung Leg was Denmark's offering to the 1957 Karlovy Vary Film Festival. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Europa (retitled Zentropa for the American release) is an hallucinatory Danish film set in postwar Germany. Jean-Marc Barr plays a young German who aspires for a job as a street conductor. But this is no mere "Joe Job;" Barr's adventures on the line are designed as a metaphor for the emergence of the "New Europe" following the war. Barbara Sukowa costars as the daughter of a railroad magnate--and possible Nazi sympathizer. Many of the special-effects sequences are computer enhanced, but even the "live" scenes have an unsettling, surreal quality to them (colors changing abruptly, backgrounds shifting without warning, etc.) This experimental film left some viewers confused, which may be why English-language prints of Zentropa are narrated by Max Von Sydow. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
