Galina has grown increasingly skittish since her divorce, and her students (she's a high-school teacher) become alert to her vulnerability. Restraint would be uncharacteristic in this situation, as teens are notoriously unforgiving of the imperfections of their elders. They band together to make a complaint to the school governing committee that she's incompetent and anti-Semitic. When the students discover that she's having an affair with another teacher, they intrude on that, too. The last straw comes when, as a "trick," they kidnap her son from nursery school. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this watchable sci fi story based on a novel by Sergei Pavlov, the time is the 21st century, and the space security organization has a dangerous situation on its hands -- it seems four individuals from outer space have the ability to change form and to affect radio transmissions and magnetic fields. Their powers could threaten governments on earth and seem to derive from an unusual accident on one of the moons of Uranus shortly after four astronauts landed. Now the space police have to bring this potentially disastrous situation under control. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This Russian adaptation of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment packs nearly every pivotal event from the mammoth novel into its 200 minute running time. Georgi Taratorkin stars as Raskolnikov, the impressionable student who believes himself to be above the law-and commits murder to prove his theory. Innokenti Smoktunovskiy, best known for his brilliant interpretation of the title character in the Russian Hamlet (1964), costars as police inspector Porfiry, who humbly but diligently wears down Raskolnikov's alibi. Most cinemadaptations of Crime and Punishment end with the protagonist's arrest; this one retains Dostoyevsky's lengthy post-prison epilogue, in which Raskolnikov learns at long last how to be a human being. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
