To help fight the communists, comic-strip superhero Mister Freedom (John Abbey) is sent to France by an American group called Freedom Incorporated. Receiving his orders from Doctor Freedom (Donald Pleasence), he battles the Russian Moujik Man and a fire-breathing dragon named Red China Man in this political satire critical of U.S. policies. When one of the heroes nears death, another is sent to take his place to uphold the sometimes ridiculous policies. Lang Jeffries takes over the role of French Secret Agent FX-18 in director Riccardo Freda's second Francis Coplan spy parody. Viewed in light of the 1997 scandal regarding the Wildenstein art collection, this once-superficial trifle comes across as surprisingly prescient. Coplan is sent to Mexico City, where Interpol has discovered several valuable paintings lost since the Nazi withdrawal from France being sold at highly-publicized auctions. Those who bid on the paintings are soon murdered and their art stolen. After narrowly surviving several assassination attempts, Coplan locates a rich oil baron and an evil Countess (Silvia Solar) who plan to rule the world by tunneling beneath King Ranch and replacing President Johnson with an evil duplicate who will order a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. Jeeps are blown up with bazookas, heads are crushed in an Aztec torture device, and a secret underground silo is demolished along the way. The amusing screenplay by Bertrand Tavernier often pushes the line between spoof and indulgence, but the resulting film is brisk and entertaining. One video version, Mexican Slayride, is more brisk than necessary, having been butchered to only 56 minutes. This spy film purports to be inspired by the true story of Kim Philby (1912-1988), a British intelligence officer and Soviet spy during the 1940s and '50s who gained international notoriety when he blew his cover and defected to the USSR in 1963. But this fictional, unsophisticated, if not naive docudrama portrays a world of espionage in a cross between Nancy Drew and Sam Spade, and Philby's real story is buried in the process. The film opens with British double agent Philip Kimberly (Michael Caine) undergoing complete plastic surgery by order of his Soviet bosses, while his death is announced in the world press. With a different name and face, Kimberly -- now Kuzminsky -- is sent back to England in the guise of a Soviet citizen to retrieve a secret list of names he supposedly hid several years ago. Kusminsky/Kimberly defects at the British passport control, and later escapes his British guards -- leading to a manhunt by both British and Soviet agents. His chief nemesis is Admiral Scaith (Laurence Olivier) and the man he assigns to the case, Jaime Fraser (Robert Powell) -- who just happens to be living with Kimberly's daughter. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This crime action movie is based on Peter Maas' best-selling book The Valachi Papers. That book, in turn, is based on prison conversations and the actual U.S. Senate testimony of Joseph Valachi, a high-ranking figure in the Mafia. The book, which tells precisely who did what to whom, when and why, electrified the nation. This film had to be made in Italy, because attempts to shoot in the U.S. were stymied by mob-arranged "accidents" and protests. The story is told in flashback as Valachi (Charles Bronson) tells a Federal agent about his activities from 1929 to 1961, when he worked for the Capo of Capos, Vito Genovese (Lino Ventura). Though his tale necessarily takes place in a number of episodes, it never fails to have lots of drama and action. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Roger Santet (Alain Delon) is a convicted murderer sprung from prison by the Sicilian clan headed by the aging Vittorio Manalese (Jean Gabin). They conspire to steal a large cache of jewels from an exhibit in Rome. As they are preparing for the heist, the mobster's American friend Tony Nicosia (Amedeo Nazzarri) suggests that a better way to get the rocks would be to hijack the transport plane while it is en route to New York. The dogged inspector Le Goff (Lino Ventura) is using all the available resources to thwart their plans. Though the heist itself is successful, Santet finds himself trapped by the mob because of his fling with Manalese's daughter-in-law (Irina Demick). ~ Yuri German, All Movie Guide
