Dee Wallace Movies
Kansan
Dee Wallace rose out of the ashes of an extremely difficult childhood that included paternal abuse and a suicide to establish a resonantly successful movie career as a character actress. Born
Deanna Bowers,
Wallace attended the University of Kansas in the late '60s as an education major, then turned to dancing and drama, at least partially as an escape from her torturous familial history. Radiating a cornflower-wholesome, Middle-American goodness,
Wallace often played against that image, tackling parts and films that exposed a darker side of domestic life. On that note, she began to specialize in horror roles, and landed one of the most memorable for quite some time: that of Lynne Wood, the mother of an itinerant family that falls prey to a band of mutant desert-dwelling cannibals, in
Wes Craven's controversial gore-fest
The Hills Have Eyes (1977).
Another lurid role, albeit a much less extreme one --
Wallace's portrayal of a prostitute in a 1978 episode of
Lou Grant -- caught the attention of white-hot director
Steven Spielberg, who would eventually seek an actress to portray Mary, the colorful divorcée mother of Elliott (
Henry Thomas) in his box-office phenomenon
E.T. (1982). In the meantime, however,
Wallace achieved fame independently of
Spielberg and his team with another legendary part: that of Karen White, a sexy blonde TV newscaster who gets more than she bargained for when she heads off to a California retreat, in
Joe Dante's ghoulish, werewolf-themed horror comedy
The Howling. After
E.T.,
Wallace's popularity soared; she followed it up with a contribution to the
Stephen King horror vehicle
Cujo (1983), as a mother terrorized relentlessly by a monstrous, rabid Saint Bernard.
Unfortunately -- and for unknown reasons --
Wallace's career languished for much of the 1980s and '90s, in forgettable potboilers and programmers ranging from
Critters (1986) to
Popcorn (1990) to
Alligator 2: The Mutation (1990). Occasionally, she signed to work with directors who wanted to trade on her status as a terror icon, such as
Peter Jackson, with his 1996 horror comedy
The Frighteners. In fact, this is exactly what happened when
Rob Zombie tapped
Wallace to play Laurie Strode's mother in his violent 2007 remake of
Halloween.
Wallace is also occasionally billed as
Dee Wallace-Stone; she took the "Stone" from the surname of her first husband,
Christopher Stone (
The Howling), who died of a heart attack in 1995. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Critters, an amusing horror comedy directed byStephen Herek, is the story of a family menaced by eight basketball sized creatures from outer space who arrive at their Kansas farm in search of food. Helen Brown (Dee Wallace Stone) and Brad (Scott Grimes), owners of the farm find themselves held hostage as the creatures roll, jump and bounce around during the night. They are pursued by a pair of inept, intergalactic bounty hunters, Charlie (Don Keith Opper) and Johnny (Terrence Mann) who can shape-shift at will and are packing weapons capable of taking care of any creature they encounter. The special effects of this humorous thriller are extremely good and the creatures themselves have distinct and separate personalities. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

Christmas Visitor is an American/Australian coproduction geared for exposure on the Disney Channel pay-cable service. The scene is the Australian outback in the 1890s, where a drought threatens to wipe out a farming community. Holding out for a miracle, the farmers face a bleak Yuletide, until an ethereal stranger pays a visit. Christmas Visitor was directed by the "other" George Miller -- that is, the George Miller responsible for Man From Snowy River rather than Mad Max. In Australia, the film was telecast under the title Bushfire Moon. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

When this seriocomic TV film first aired March 28, 1988, it was titled Addicted to His Love. Evidently to pacify certain feminist factions, the film was rechristened Sisterhood for syndication. Either way, this is the story of a smooth lothario, played by Barry Bostwick. In the course of 97 minutes, Bostwick finds time to romance and betray four women, played by Linda Purl, Coleen Camp, Erin Grey and Dee Wallace-Stone. Instead of getting mad upon learning that they're sharing Bostwick's affections, the four ladies join forces to get even. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The citizens of Cabot Cove are terrified by the arrival of young Irene Terhune (Julian Donald), an apparent practitioner of black magic. Rumors are rife that Irene is actually the ghost of Annie Gorman, a local witch who had supposedly died centuries ago. Inevitably, murder rears it ugly head and Irene (or Annie) is held responsible, but Jessica (Angela Lansbury) refuses to hum along with the old song "It's Witchcraft." And yes, that's future political satirist Bill Maher in the role of Rick Rivers. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A made-for-TV effort from horror director Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), this supernatural thriller is ostensibly based on the novella of the same name by Cornell Woolrich -- but the title is pretty much where the similarity ends. The plot involves a possessed Aztec ceremonial cloak (once used to line a sacred burial chamber) which poisons the soul of anyone who wears it. An improbable string of events sees the cloak turned into a little slip of a dress -- donned by several different women, but worn to evil perfection by Madchen Amick (Twin Peaks's Shelly). I'm Dangerous Tonight features colorful supporting performances from Anthony Perkins and R. Lee Ermey. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Not so much a sequel to the John Sayles-scripted Alligator as a shoddy remake, this sophomoric low-budget effort plays like a bad TV movie about a swamp-dwelling alligator mutated to monstrous size by toxic waste, munching on the screaming residents of a lakefront community. The naughty polluter who caused this mutation is the property developer himself (Steve Railsback, playing such a cookie-cutter villain that he might as well have a "BAD GUY" sign around his neck). An embarrassed Joseph Bologna plays the cop investigating the mutilation murders; an equally-ashamed Dee Wallace Stone plays the scientist assisting him, who is conveniently married to him as well. In an attempt to remedy the situation, a big-game hunter (Richard Lynch) is called in to bag the beast. When his efforts fail, it's left to Bologna to pick up the pieces -- literally -- and take charge of the situation when the big reptile decides to take in the grand opening of the local amusement park. From a nonsensical script to cheesy special effects that make the beast look like a pool toy, this film shows none of the cynical charm and sly wit that made Alligator so enjoyable. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Jessica (Angela Lansbury) comes to the aid of Ellen Woer (Dee Wallace Stone), whom she'd previously helped to beat a murder rap. In the interim, Ellen has become owner of a diner, in which three patrons died of arsenic poisoning. While Jessica labors to find out what really happened, several disgruntled "locals", convinced that Ellen had actually been guilty of murder the first time around, aren't about to let her slip through the fingers of the law a second time--and no one is more vituperative (or profane) than the town's chief hothead, Edge Potter (Don Swayze). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

So many screenwriters have surreptitiously updated the works of Mark Twain with contemporary jargon and "political correctness", without saying they've done as much, that it's a bit refreshing to see an admitted, all-out updating of Twain. Scenarist Chrstopher Sturgeon has transplanted the characters and situations of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn into a modern-day setting that accomodates both Hannibal, Missouri and Las Vegas, Nevada! The "Huck" counterpart, played by Chauncey Leopardi, escapes his abusive stepfather in the company of a cardsharp named Injun Joe-played herein by genuine Native American Graham Greene. Featured in the cast are such surefire laughgetters as Joe Piscopo and John Astin, the latter cast in the "Widow Douglas" role (you have to be there). As audacious and stilted as it sounds, Huck and the King of Hearts works, and works beautifully. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Rescue Me is an agreeably daffy spoof of adventure films. Nerdy high school camera aficionado (Stephen Dorff) worships teen queen (Ami Dolenz) from afar. He fantasizes about performing some sort of noble act to impress her. But when she's kidnapped before his very eyes, he's too busy taking pictures to do anything. With the help of scuzzy Vietnam veteran (Michael Dudikoff) (who delivers an amiable takeoff of his usual film roles), Dorff goes to the girl's rescue. Engaging supporting appearances by Peter DeLuise and Dee Wallace Stone add to the PG-13 fun. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Like the feature film Network (1976), this made-for-television drama scathingly satirizes an amoral, avaricious media. The story is set in 1999, a time the pay-per-view television industry is in a tailspin. It seems with over 500 available channels, audiences have become jaded with movies and sports. Enter up-and-coming executive Jessica Traynor (Sean Young) a member of the Tycom network team. It is her brilliant idea that her company can attract new customers by offering them a chance to witness a real execution on live television. Once her company approves and she untangles all the government red-tape, Jessica is left with the task of choosing an appropriately photogenic and charismatic death-row inmate. Trouble brews when Jessica begins suspecting that the man she selected may be innocent. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Charlatan Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) has genuine psychic powers, but he doesn't use them to help people. Rather, he generates cases for his supernatural private-eye firm by harassing a group of hapless ghosts (including a dearly departed Wild West outlaw and an undead judge played by John Astin) into staging hauntings and poltergeists in the homes of likely marks. Bannister's world turns on its head when he starts noticing real hauntings around town -- ghostly assassinations that seem to be tied to the execution 20 years earlier of a brutal serial killer. Lucy Lunskey (Trini Alvarado), the wife of one unlucky victim, teams up with Bannister to get to the bottom of the killings and find out what shut-in Patricia Bradley (Dee Wallace Stone) and her witchy mother (Julia McCarthy) have to do with the sinister spree. ~ Brian J.
