An updated but faithful remake of Roger Corman's 1959 exploitation favorite, this campy horror-comedy chronicles the deviant exploits of a coffee-house busboy whose dream of becoming a famous artist comes true after he accidentally stumbles upon a way to make eerily life-like statues. Directed by Michael James McDonald and executive produced by Corman, the story is adapted from Charles Griffiths' original script. As in the first story, this version takes place in a Venice Beach coffee house filled with quirky performance artists, and "alternative types" (originally beatniks). Anthony Michael Hall replaces the inimitable Dick Miller as the geeky busboy Walter. Desperate for a filler host after Larry falls ill shortly before air, Artie (Rip Torn) reluctantly agrees to do something he swore never to do -- let Hank (Jeffrey Tambor) host the show. Hank is elated but somewhat hesitant for fear of failure, but his insecurity ultimately endears him to the audience and his appearance is a success. Empowered by his previous success, Hank takes the stage when Larry calls in sick again the following night, though his newfound confidence results in an arrogant stint that leaves everyone with a bad taste in their mouths. This comical adventure pokes fun at Rambo as it chronicles the exploits of Traxx, a Texas Highway patrolman who leaves the state police to become a soldier-of-fortune in Hadleyville where he gets into baking funky cookies and working as a sort of town bouncer helping to clean up the burg. While there he and the Mayor, Alexandria Cray have a passionate affair. Real trouble comes to town in the form of the fearsome Uzi-toting Guzik brothers who have come to throw the do-gooder out.
