Following a near rape, a deeply traumatized orphan girl has a sexual liaison with an aging lesbian. The relationship goes well until the confused girl meets a kind young man who proves that not all of his ilk are contemptible. She is convinced and she marries him, but she does not discuss her earlier relationship with him. Trouble brews when the two former lovers meet at a party. Lonely, the older woman tries to rekindle their affair, but the young wife spurns her. This leads to tragedy. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Kate (Bea Benaderet) becomes convinced that her daughters would rather live in a big city like New York rather than a tiny whistle-stop like Hooterville. This explains why Kate puts the Shady Rest Hotel up for sale and prepares to move. Starlet Reggie Lansfield (Jean Hale) is hired as a stand-in for Victoria Dawn (Patrice Wymore), a once-popular actress and swimming star who plans to revitalize her career by staging a spectacular publicity stunt. Posing as Victoria, Reggie is to swim the entire length of the Catalina Channel--but the stunt is spoiled when the girl is rescued by boat captain Charlie Shaw (played by Bill Williams, the husband of Perry Mason costar Barbara Hale. Nor is this the end of Reggie's troubles: Victoria turns up murdered, and the hapless "double" is charged with the crime. As a reward for a $10 million endowment, Jed Clampett receives an honorary doctorate from Greely College. Unfortunately, this incurs the jealousy of Granny, who up until now was the only "doctor" in the family. Somehow or other, the plot of this episode brings Granny in close contact with a troupe of sideshow performers, including a "chicken woman" (imagine the jokes inspired by this character!) Behind every great woman, there's a man who isn't so sure he's happy to be there -- or at least that's the state of affairs in this gender-switch comedy. Leslie McCloud (Polly Bergen) makes history when she becomes the first woman elected to the office of President of the United States. However, while Leslie's achievement is a great step forward for women, her husband Thad McCloud is less enthusiastic about his own role in closing the gender gap. Thad soon finds his daily schedule is filled with meeting women from garden clubs, his official quarters are still filled with pink and frilly furniture from the previous resident, and Leslie's extremely busy schedule is putting a severe crimp in their love life. While Thad stews over his lowly status as a male "First Lady," Leslie is attempting to avoid an international incident by negotiating with Latin dictator Valdez (Eli Walach), who develops a less-than-diplomatic interest in the Leader of the Free World. Wilma Gregson (Kathryn Givney), imperious owner of the Gregson Cannery Company, is outraged when details of a secret merger with Super Brand Foods is made public. It turns out that the information was accidentally leaked by Wilma's little granddaughter Sandra (Chrystine Jordan) while corresponding to her pen-pal. Refusing to take Sandra's age and innocence into consideration, Wilma threatens dire conseuqences to the girl and her parents--thus setting herself up as a perfect candidate for murder. Accused of the crime is family friend Karen Ross, whereupon Sandra begs Perry Mason to defend Karen in court. Inasmuch as the hearing takes place in San Francisco, Mason's usual nemesis Hamilton Burger is supplanted by the local DA, played by Everett Sloane. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
