A former car racer gets more than he bargained for when he attempts to settle down and start selling used cars alongside his former mechanic in this rubber burning chase film directed by and starring The Dukes of Hazard's John Schneider. J.R. Collier (Schneider) is a racecar driver who thrives on speed, but when his wife Becky threatens to divorce him and take the couple's daughter Danielle away, the devoted wheelman suddenly downshifts. Realizing that he could very well lose his family, Collier decides to abandon the racetrack for the life of a used car salesman. But Collier still longs to drive fast, and in order to build up his lot he begins racing other drivers for the pink slips to their cars. Of course it isn't long before Collier has built up an impressive array of automobiles. Trouble arises, however, when Collier races an overconfident, Ferrari driving Texan and wins the papers to a car with a valuable secret. As it turns out, the owner of the Ferrari is a man named Mr. Fanning, and Mr. Fanning is willing to do whatever it takes to retrieve his valuable property. After kidnapping Collier's wife and daughter, Mr. Fanning sends a team of his most talented men to get the car back. Not realizing that his wife and daughter are in grave danger, the unsuspecting Collier does his best to avoid the fast driving thugs at all costs as the situation grows increasingly tense. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The true story of the kids who created modern skateboard culture is recreated in this drama. In the early '70s, skateboards were seen as a fad of the 1960s that had all but died out, but in a rough-and-tumble Venice, CA, community known as "Dogtown," that was about to change. Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk), Stacy Peralta (John Robinson), and Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch) were three guys who liked to surf the rugged beaches around Venice and hung out at the Zephyr Surf Shop, a store run by Skip Engblom (Heath Ledger) that stocked gear for adventurous surfers and skateboarders. With the advent of new urethane wheels that connected with concrete in a way old metal and rubber wheels could not, Tony, Stacy, and Jay began exploring ways to translate radical surf style to skateboarding, and the guys invented a new way to skate inside the smooth, round surfaces of empty pools, employing vertical moves and edge flips that added a new and dramatic spin to skating. It didn't take long for word to spread about the wild new style of the Z-Boys, and they quickly became local celebrities, and later nationwide skating stars, though sudden fame took its toll on these young men. The true story of Lords of Dogtown was previously the basis of the acclaimed documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys, directed by former Z-Boy Stacy Peralta, who like Tony Alva served as a consultant on this project. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Joseph Papp's notion of staging one of Gilbert and Sullivan's best-loved operettas with two pop singers (Linda Ronstadt and Rex Smith) in the leads paid off as a surprise Broadway smash in the early 1980s, and this film faithfully reproduces Papp's production, featuring most of the original cast and the original director. Frederic (Smith) has been taught since childhood to be a sea-going bandit by the Pirate King (Kevin Kline), but with his 21st birthday imminent, Frederic wants to leave pirating behind, especially after he becomes infatuated with innocent Mabel (Ronstadt). But the Pirate King informs Frederic that since he was born on the last day of February on a Leap Year, his 21st birthday won't roll around for some time yet, and he still owes the King some raiding on the high seas. To Frederic's embarrassment, the Pirate King's next target turns out to be Major General Stanley (George Rose), Mabel's father! The Pirates of Penzance also features Angela Lansbury as Ruth (the sole major casting change from the Broadway production -- Estelle Parsons played the role on stage). ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
