In this jungle adventure a Great White Hunter travels to Africa to capture exotic animals and sell them to zoos and circuses. This disgusts a lovely veterinarian who thinks the animals should run free. To assist with the capture and care of the animals, the hunter hires natives. One day the hunter fires one of the locals. To get revenge, the former employee frees the animals just before a wealthy buyer is to arrive. Unfortunately, the hunter blames an innocent young boy for the crime. Heretofore, the boy believed the hunter cared for him. Hot on the heels of Safari came another Columbia-released, African-filmed adventure, Beyond Mombassa. Matt Campbell (Cornel Wilde) arrives in Kenya on a double quest. He hopes to locate a valuable uranium mine, and also to learn the "whos, whats and whys" of his brother's murder. Joing Campbell's safari are missionary Ralph Hoyt (Leo Genn) and Hoyt's niece Ann Wilson (Donna Reed). After several attempts are made on Campbell's life, he comes to the conclusion that one of his travelling companions was responsible for his brother's death. Sure enough, the villain has not only dispatched Campbell's brother, but has also arranged the evidence so as to place the blame on a legendary tribe of "leopard men". This tense, uncompromising African actioner affords Victor Mature one of his best screen roles. When his family is wiped out by Mau Mau insurrectionists, white hunter Mature assembles an expedition to track down the tribal leader responsible for the massacre. The British authorities don't want Mature to foment further difficulty by seeking revenge, so they revoke his hunting license. Still, he manages to embark upon his justice-seeking safari by hiring himself out as a guide for millionaire lion hunter Roland Culver and Culver's fiancee Janet Leigh. The grimness of the proceedings is occasionally leavened by an incongruously upbeat musical score. Safari was photographed on location by Ted Moore and directed by Terence Young, who'd later collaborate on the James Bond epic Thunderball (1965). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Anthony Steel plays a humane British game warden who sets up an African wildlife preserve. Ivory poachers sign up for the preserve's safari tour in hopes of bagging a few pachyderms. Steel and his wife Dinah Sheridan foil the villains, whose leader (Harold Warrender) is shot by the police while trying to escape. The film ends with Steel creating the Mt. Kilimanjaro Game Preserve Park (Ernest Hemingway was not among the board of directors). Filmed in semi-documentary fashion, Where No Vultures Fly was a hit in Britain, where it was originally released as The Ivory Hunter. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
