In Le Dernier Souffle/Deep End, a policeman is forced to discover just how far his family has chosen to live on the other side of the law. Quebec peace officer Laurent (Luc Picard) arrives at a crime scene to discover a particularly brutal murder has been committed -- and that the victim was his brother Martin. Laurent is determined to get to the bottom of the killing, but the deeper he digs the more unpleasant the facts become. It seems Martin was being investigated by the police at the time of his death; he was a member of a white supremacist organization in cahoots with Russian gangsters and tied to many illegal activities. Laurent's unpleasant discoveries don't stop there, when he finds out his father is a terrorist wanted by the law, and the trail of suspects in Martin's murder leads him to a small town in Arkansas and a fanatical right-wing militia group. This French-Canadian drama features dialogue in both French and English, with different parts of the story taking place in Quebec and the United States. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This low-key Canadian thriller stars Rod Steiger as Myron Hatch, a deranged gynecologist who has an unhealthy obsession with his late mother's memory. After Hatch puts his family home up for sale and moves into the adjacent house, a yuppie couple, Mary and John Westhill (Linda Kozlowski and Ron Lea), set their sights on the property. Hatch's latent mania is unleashed the moment he sees Mary -- a dead ringer for his late mother -- and his obsession with her begins. His less-than-subtle attempts to maneuver himself into her life are nearly thwarted by John's fears of losing his job, and Hatch resorts to murder to keep Mary near him. Despite slick production values and some clever Hitchcockian touches, there is little to distinguish The Neighbor from formulaic made-for-TV fare. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

This bargain-basement budgeted sci-fi horror movie pays a kind of tribute to 1930s sci-fi serials such as "King of the Rocket Men." It is set just after the Frog Wars of the preceding film Hell Comes to Frogtown (1988). Following that terrible battle, the Froggie mutants were placed on the special Frogtown Mutant Reservation. The story begins as the leader of Frogtown, Zar abducts Professor Tanzer and forces him to perfect a terrible serum that will turn the Earth's remaining population into croaking, fly-eating amphibians. Zar then sends out an android version of Commander Toady (a character who died in the first film) to bring in some subjects to test. Toady's first catch is the muscle-bound Rocket Ranger Jones who is injected by the lovely Nurse Cloris. To save Jones from a terrible fate, fellow rocketeers send out the courageous Ranger Sam Hell to save them. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

This bizarre adaptation of the superb horror novel by Dean Koontz details the mental collapse of writer Hillary Thomas (Victoria Tennant), who is relentlessly stalked by sadistic psycho Bruno Clavell (Jean Leclerc), whom she had once interviewed for her latest book. After he breaks into her apartment to attack her, she is forced to kill him in self-defense... but her torment doesn't stop there. After her apparently still-living tormentor returns to assault her again, she turns to cop Tony Clemenza (Chris Sarandon) for help, and the two form a romantic bond while working together to solve the mystery. The confusing climax tries to tie up the novel's far-flung elements of black magic, incest, drugs, and hordes of hungry cockroaches, but one is left wondering what exactly is going on. Violent, gory, and perverse, this adaptation is dulled by flat performances and a script that fails to keep track of Koontz's complex storytelling techniques. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

This minor exploitation oddity pits two curvaceous ex-cons against the inbred populace of a small fishing town -- particularly the title character, whose creepy mother encourages his campaigns of terror against the girls. Though Junior's antics are often quite sadistic -- ranging from pelting one girl with worms to gutting the other's dog -- the filmmakers seem to lack the seedy convictions possessed by the films which clearly inspired them (namely Last House on the Left, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I Spit On Your Grave), making the heroines' climactic revenge less satisfying. We're almost asked to pity the poor lunkhead, whose actions are dictated by the desires of his mother ... who, by the way, seems to be sporting a serious case of five o'clock shadow! ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Some potent comic talent lends credibility to the Canadian Funny Farm. Michael Chapin stars as Mark, a would-be stand-up comedian. Mark leaves his Midwestern hometown behind to try his luck at the California comedy club managed by Gail (Eileen Brennan, doing a superb takeoff of real-life Comedy Store maven Mitzi Shore). Jack Carter and Howie Mandell are among the many funsters who parade past the screen in this uneven but amusing low-budgeter. Funny Farm should not be confused with the 1988 Chevy Chase vehicle of the same name. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
