The literal English translation of the German-titled film here is "The Hostess of the Lahn." Suzanne (Terry Torday) is the beautiful redhead who runs an inn in the town of Giessen. She is the subject of many inspirational love songs by the student population. The lyrics also reflect the Germans' resentment and hostility toward the French occupation by the army of Napoleon. Suzanne appears in various stages of undress in this slow-moving feature. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

- Terry Torday, Pascale Petit, (more)
Don't try to make sense of the title: just sit back and enjoy this daffy German-Turkish farce. Oskar Sima plays a successful fruit merchant who is busily preparing for the wedding of his daughter (Ruth Stephan). At the same time, Sima is celebrating half a century in the fruit business. One of his biggest suppliers, a Turkish potentate, gratefully offers Sima an anniversary present: A collection of lovelies from his harem. The veiled, bewelled ladies cause no end of consternation for Sima, who tries to keep them hidden as the deadline for his daughter's wedding approaches. Originally released as Die Turkischen Gurken, Turkish Cucumber was distributed in the US by the redoubtable K. Gordon Murray under a variety of titles, including Wedding Present and Daddy's Delectable Dozen. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
This is an unpretentious teen-oriented musical with enough songs and dances (including that of the title) to keep the younger set entertained. As is usual in these types of films, the storyline is primarily an excuse to bring in as much singing and dancing talent as can fit into the running time. In this case, Johann Ebeseder (Paul Hoerbiger) is the manager of a theater that is about to buckle under. The powers-that-be want to tear the building down, but when one of these men meets Johann's granddaughter, he is smitten by her charms. That offers some hope of fighting the establishment. Then a disastrous fire settles the problem of the theater -- though one has not yet heard the last from Johann. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

- Paul Hoerbiger, Rex Gildo, (more)

As can be gathered from its title, which translates to Vienna, City of My Dreams, this film is an old-fashioned Austrian comedy with operatic undertones. Hans Holt stars as the obligatory incognito king, in this case one "Alexander of Alania." Escaping a revolution, Alexander takes a job as chauffeur in his own country's embassy in Vienna. Gaining popularity for this move, the King is invited by popular demand to return to his throne. By this time, he has fallen in love with pretty commoner Elisabeth Seyboldt (Hertha Feller), while Alexander's one-time fiancee, Princess Sandra (Erika Remberg), has found happiness in the arms of music teacher Peter Lehnert (Adrian Hoven, the story's nominal hero). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The long-standing feud between Germans and Austrians is grist for the comedy mill in Und die Liebe Lacht Dazu (And Love Laughs At It). The scene is an Austrian mountain resort, where a German and Austrian family clash over who will claim the hotel's best suite. Not surprisingly, the son of the Austrian clan and the daughter of the German aggregation fall in love. The romantic plotline is sappy and sentimental, but the comedy is robust and rowdy, in typical Teutonic fashion. Und die Liebe Lacht Dazu was based on Schwartzbrot and Kipferl, a play by Werner von der Schulberg. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Paul Hoerbiger, Gusti Wolf, (more)

The ever-adventuresome Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger are responsible for the British musical farce Oh, Rosalinda! Set in postwar Vienna, the film stars Michael Redgrave as Colonel Eisenstein, a military officer who because of a little legal misunderstanding must serve a few months in prison. While sitting alone in her sumptuous house, the colonel's wife Rosalinda (Ludmilla Tcherina) is romanced by American officer Alfred Westerman (Mel Ferrer). When the guard assigned to escort Rosalinda to prison marches in, Westerman, hoping to save Rosalinda from disgrace, claims that he's her husband, and winds up in the pokey himself. Later on, Rosalinda attends a costume ball, where she flirts outrageously with her own husband. Sound familiar? It should: Oh, Rosalinda is a modernized version of Johann Strauss' comic opera Die Fledermaus. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Michael Redgrave, Mel Ferrer, (more)
Officially listed as an Austrian film, Verliebte Leute (Loving Couples) was actually an Austro-German co-production. Through a series of comic complications, a humble telephone operator (Hannelore Bollmann) is mistaken for the daughter of a millionaire (Oskor Sims). Thus, when the chauffeur (Peter Passetti) falls in love with the girl, he feels he must prove himself worthy of her "station in life." Several misunderstandings later, the truth comes out, but love conquers all, as the audience knew it would in Reel One. The most striking aspect of Verliebte Leute is its breathtaking location photography. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Hannelore Bollmann, Doris Kirchner, (more)
