Norwegian director Bent Hamer follows up his quirky and critically acclaimed Kitchen Stories with a heartbreakingly humorous look at the life of depressive writer Hank Chinaski -- the fictional counterpart of real-life author Charles Bukowski. Adapted from Bukowski's 1975 novel of the same name, Hamer's film follows the perpetually unemployed, alcohol-swilling Cinaski (Matt Dillon) as he drifts through the city streets in search of a job that won't come between him and his first love, writing. Directed by actress Rosanna Arquette, this candid documentary is not only about the iconoclastic and somewhat reclusive film star Debra Winger (who does not even appear onscreen until an hour into the film), but also about the trials and tribulations of actresses in Hollywood who have reached "that certain age." In the course of her "search," Arquette interviews several of her colleagues, among them Whoopi Goldberg, Diane Lane, Teri Garr, Holly Hunter, Vanessa Redgrave, Charlotte Rampling, Meg Ryan, and Sharon Stone, all of whom have their own personal horror stories about insensitive producers and casting directors who tend to think of over-40 (and sometimes over-30) actresses as being suitable only for mother, "other woman," and "hero's girlfriend" roles -- when they bother to cast these actresses at all. The women also discuss the difficulties in balancing a successful career and a private life. There's an old joke that goes "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean people aren't out to get you," and this independent thriller puts a new and frightening spin on that notion. Jackson (Michael Risley) has a good job with a computer firm and a solid relationship with his fiancée Kim (Adrienne Shelly), but that begins to change one day when Jackson notices things on his desk aren't where they're supposed to be. Jackson wonders if someone is playing tricks on him when he starts getting vaguely threatening messages in his e-mail, and he sees a television commercial advertising a new fragrance for women, Revolution #9, that he's convinced is filled with messages directed specifically at him. Kim is worried that something is wrong with Jackson, and urges him to see a psychiatrist, but Jackson is convinced that someone is determined to hurt him. After his fears cost him his job, Jackson is diagnosed as suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, but he refuses to believe it, certain that the doctors are in cahoots with whoever has been after him, and he tries to track down Scooter McCrae (Spaulding Gray), the director of the TV spot for Revolution #9, in a bid to find out the truth about what's been happening. The death of a beloved pet sends the once-happy relationship of a New York couple spiraling into disaster in this black comedy that finds Cop Land and Rounders producer Christopher Goode stepping into the director's chair. Tom and Perri seem to have the perfect relationship, but their love sours when Tom's pet golden retriever is run over by a car and Tom blames Perri for the dog's sudden death. As Tom's obsession with finding the driver of the car becomes all-consuming, Perri's inability to understand her boyfriend's vengeful mindset finds the pair slowly drifting apart. Former Hal Hartley collaborator Adrienne Shelly directs her second feature about a blind date gone horribly horribly awry. Still thoroughly depressed after his girlfriend dumped him three months ago, Bill (Reg Rogers) is coerced by his sister (Shelly) into going on a blind date with Bernice (Ally Sheedy). Bill is immediately underwhelmed by his cheerless date, and as the night grinds on, he bluntly tells her what he thinks. Instead of ending things, Bernice becomes obsessed with the man, telling him at one point that since the date, he has "taken something away." After trying more standard means to worm her way into his life, she takes drastic action; she pulls a gun on Bill and ushers him to her vintage Mercury. Soon Bill finds himself the unwilling accomplice to Bernice's serial gunpoint robberies of boutiques. Meanwhile, she lambastes him for not being adequately respectful. However, Maddy's attention is soon directed toward carnival worker Will (Sam Trammell), and she also gets involved in the problem of Lulu's boarder Claire (Joely Richardson), a French war bride and widow now pregnant by gregarious garage owner Rick (Jay O. In the bizarre style of director Hal Hartley, for whom she performed in The Unbelievable Truth and Trust, actress Adrienne Shelly's debut as a director and screenwriter is a story about a group of young Manhattanites trying desperately to figure out what life is all about. Donna (Shelly) is a restless, jobless young woman with a lover, Adam (Tim Guinee) who is not only impotent but more interested in reading Russian literature than in having sex. Her college professor, Murphy (Roger Rees), is an off-the-wall Englishman who has a secret, unrequited affection for Donna. Donna is neurotic, depressed, and uneasy about life's meaninglessness, to the point where getting out of bed each morning is a chore. Her life changes one morning when she hears a strange rumbling coming from her plate of scrambled eggs. She looks out the window and witnesses a murder, but when the police come, the body has disappeared, and they dismiss Donna's testimony as mad ravings. After seeing several other murders, she fears for her sanity. She consults a gypsy fortuneteller, Dominga (Louise Lasser). Dominga points out a direction for Donna to follow, and she sets off with Adam, her girlfriend Georgie (Hynden Walch) and two eccentric friends, Ian (Paul Cassell) and Alex (John Sklaroff), to investigate the murders. A young man trying to break out of his blue collar life in New Jersey finds himself snared by a web of crime and deceit in this independent drama. Just released after an 18-month stretch in prison, 20-year-old Eddie Dolan (Billy Crudup) has few prospects and nowhere to go, so he appears on the doorstep of his older brother Terry (Paul Schulze). Terry takes him in, giving him a place to stay and helping him get a job at the factory where their dad Nick (Frank Vincent) has worked nearly all his adult life. However, times are not happy around the Dolan household; money is tight, and Terry's relationship with his wife Janey (Adrienne Shelly) has been rocky since the birth of their first child six months before. Eddie starts earning some extra cash by joining up with a group of car thieves pulling insurance scams, and in time, he makes enough money to buy a muscle car, which he races in his spare time. On the night shift at the factory, Eddie spends his days working on his car, while Janey, bored with her new role as a stay-at-home mom, starts spending more and more time with him; eventually they move past friendship into an affair, which like Eddie's involvement with the carjackers becomes only more dangerous in the weeks to come. Grind marked the feature debut for writer/director Chris Kentis; Billy Crudup's appearance predated his breakthrough roles in Inventing the Abbotts and Everyone Says I Love You, though both of those films were released before Grind could find a distributor. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Unfortunately for them, Gloria accidently drowns in their pool when she tangles with a beach ball. Now the crooks must find a look-a-like for Gloria. They find her in Teresa, a college girl with a talent for mathematics. She is captured and tattooed. She soon escapes leading the crooks on a merry chase. The Road Flower was given a limited release in 1993, then reissued two years later under the title The Road Killers. Essentially a rehash of the old drive-in perennial Hot Rods to Hell, the film stars Christopher Lambert as the taciturn head of a vacationing family. While motoring somewhere in the middle of Nevada, the family man and his loved ones are terrorized by a looney gang of hot-rodders, headed by wild-eyed Craig Sheffer (he did get better). Six screenwriters, all real-life friends, each wrote one of the sequences in this romantic comedy-drama that unfolds at a half-dozen parties and celebrations. During a cross-country trip, Joe (Eric Stoltz) proposes to his girlfriend Sarah (Meg Tilly) with his best friend Frank (Craig Sheffer) looking on. At the couple's rehearsal dinner, Sarah confesses privately to Frank her attraction to him, but what she doesn't know is that Frank is in love with her. They share a kiss, which leads to an argument between Joe and Frank at their next meeting, a weekly poker game with their buddies. At a video shoot, a dinner party, another poker game, and a few more celebrations, the friendship between the three of them is challenged by the nascent attraction between Frank and Sarah. In the meantime, the all-male poker game is invaded by Athena (Parker Posey) and Lauren (Joey Lauren Adams), and a party guest, Sid (Quentin Tarantino), delivers a memorable treatise on the homoerotic subtext of Top Gun (1986). ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Hexed is a lame, low-budget comedy spoof of Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction -- both of which are funnier than Hexed. The film concerns Matthew Welsh (Ayres Gross), a scheming hotel clerk at the Holiday Park Hotel whose life changes for better and worse when famed super-model Hexina (Claudia Christian) checks into the hotel. Matthew manages to lure Hexina back to his apartment for what he thinks will be an uninhibited night of sex -- but Hexina has other things on her mind. It turns out that she is being blackmailed over a series of murders committed in her youth when she was fat and dumpy. Hexina, whose psychological profile hasn't changed since she began to grace fashion-magazine covers, is still a raving paranoid schizophrenic who thinks that Matthew is her blackmailer. So, she acquiesces to bed down Matthew in anticipation of murdering him in the afterglow. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

Joan Micklin Silver tries her mighty best to wring something substantial out of Frank Mugavero's banal sit-com screenplay concerning the effect of divorce on the divorced parents' off-spring. Hillary Wolf stars as Laura Chartoff, a lonely thirteen-year-old girl who is the victim of multiple parental divorces and remarriages. She lives with her current stepfather Keith Powers (David Strathairn), a cool businessman, and her flighty, self-absorbed mother Melinda (Margaret Whitton). Her biological father David (Griffin Dunne) is a struggling artist separated from his second wife Barb (Patricia Kalember) and is now living with a younger woman Stephanie (Adrienne Shelley), who is pregnant with twins. After a fight with her mother and stepfather, Laura runs away to a rustic cabin in the woods being built by her older stepbrother Josh (Dan Futterman). When she spots Keith and Melinda walking up the road to the cabin, Laura dashes off into the forest. The meeting of these troubled minds at first promises to be beneficial for both, but sours as they are forced to interact with each other's dysfunctional families. Writer-director Hal Hartley's first feature -- shot in less than 12 days in his backyard for a mere $200,000 -- is a dry and dark comedy about the dangerous undercurrents that exist below the surface of normal middle class existence. Over the credits, Josh (Robert Burke), a man garbed in black, is seen hitch-hiking back to his Long Island home. People ask him, "Are you a priest?" and Josh responds, "No. I'm a mechanic." Back in Long Island in the town of Lindenhurst, beautiful and somber 17-year-old Audry (Adrienne Shelly) is busy worrying about the forthcoming apocalypse. Josh arrives in Lindenhurst and is hired by Audry's father (Chris Cooke) as a mechanic at his garage. But Audry's father worries about him, particularly when he falls in love with Audry. Her father's problems compound when Audry dumps her old boyfriend and rejects an invitation to attend Harvard. The whole town is now gossiping about Audry's new boyfriend, with rumors spreading that Josh is a mass murderer who killed two members of the family of local waitress Pearl (Julia McNeal). Pearl tells Audry, "He seems like a nice man." Audry responds, "Even though he killed your father and your sister?" Audry finally makes her father happy when she tells him she won't see Josh again, but dad's relief is short-lived when Audry informs him she's moving to New York to become an underwear model. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide
