Man ist Nur Zweimai Jung (Youth Comes Only Twice) is based on the popular stage play by Otto F. Beer and Peter Preses. The story concerns two old codgers who believe that they've outgrown romance. But when the two men magically become young again, they find that their interest in the opposite sex has increased considerably. They also hope to rectify a few errors in judgement made during their first flush of youth. Many of the cast members from the original stage production of Man ist Nur Zweimai Jung repeat their roles on screen. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Adapted from a novel by Andre Maurois, Schule fuer Ehegluck (School for Connubial Bliss) concerns young marrieds Justus and Marianne Schneeman (Paul Hubschmid, Liselotte Pulver). Feeling that Marianne is insensitive to his ambitions, Justus finds a woman who does "understand" him. As he rises to success, his affection for the other woman increases while his marriage slowly crumbles. Eventually he realizes that Marianne was the right woman for him all along, but only after learning to tell the difference between true love and false flattery. Leading man Paul Hubschmid enjoyed a brief Hollywood career as Paul Christian, while Liselotte "Lilo" Pulver later played James Cagney's pneumatic German secretary in Billy Wilder's One, Two, Three (1961). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The Austrian songfest Ideale Frau Gesucht (Ideal Girl Wanted) was tailored specifically to the talents of the popular Wolf Albach-Retty. This time, Albach-Retty plays magazine publisher Robby Holm, engaged in a circulation war with beautiful rival Irene Martens (Inge Eggar). A publicity stunt revolving around an "ideal woman" backfires, but that's not so bad since the end result is a lasting romance. The songs by Willi Berking are enjoyable, if not truly outstanding. In America, Ideale Frau Gesucht enjoyed a modicum of success in the existing German-language "kinos." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Appropriately, the title of this nostalgic Austrian musical translates to Vienna, As it Was. The story concerns a wealthy father who hopes to wean his spoiled son from his wastrel ways. To teach the boy a lesson, dad sells his business short, plunging his family into destitution. The boy straightens up and flies right in a hurry, allowing father to buy back his business at a tidy profit. Many of the nonmusical scenes in Verklungenes Wien play like something out of an old, musty operetta, and as such couldn't have meant much to American audiences in 1951. The music, however, is very pleasant and easy to take. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Despite its sinister title, the German Gefaehrliche Gaeste (Dangerous Guests) is a romantic comedy. It all begins when Peter Anders (Wolf Albach-Retty) puts his house up for sale. Enter three small-time crooks, who pose as servants to case the joint. Also on a house-hunting expedition is toothsome heroine Inge (Vera Molnar), whose wealthy family the crooks hope to fleece. The film manages to accommodate a couple of antiseptic musical numbers, one of these performed by pianist Paul Kemp, cast as Inge's uncle. This is the sort of escapist fare that was so popular in Germany during the Hitler era; after the war, however, audiences demanded a bit more realism in their entertainment. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
