The women of a small village choose a shrewd weapon in a battle of the sexes in this comedy-drama from director Radu Mihaileanu. In a town in Arabic North Africa, the men rule the roost while forcing the women to do much of the labor, when they're not busy taking care of the homes and looking after the children. Leila (Leila Bekhti), a newcomer to the community, is appalled with this division of labor, especially when it comes to water; running water is unknown in the village, and custom dictates the women carry water back from a distant stream each day. After seeing pregnant women miscarry under the backbreaking labor of fetching the water, Leila demands the menfolk either do their share of the work, or preferably run plumbing lines from the stream to the village. The men balk at Leila's demands, so she organizes the women and they lay down the law, declaring that they will withhold sex from their husbands until their demands are met. While the men are angered, and political and religious leaders speak out against the strike, the women stand firm, embracing their rights for the first time, though some discover the strike is harder to live with than expected. La Source des Femmes (aka The Source) was an official selection at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Inspired by director Vittorio De Sica's 1952 neorealist classic Umberto D., Francis Huster's sentimental drama stars Jean-Paul Belmondo as an aged retiree who is forced out onto the street with his dog after his relationship with a wealthy widow falls apart. A cinematic comeback for Belmondo, who previously retired from acting after suffering a major stroke, un homme et son chien tells the story of Charles, an older man who was invited by his lover to stay in the maid's room in her sprawling home. When the woman decides to marry again, however, Charles and his faithful four-legged companion are promptly shown the door. With no place to call home and no means of earning a living, Charles wanders the streets of Paris with his dog as their pair drift towards an uncertain fate. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Though it is seldom discussed (or acknowledged) in the West, modern-day France incorporates a substantial number of immigrant communities, with many indigenes from North Africa populating the bucolic regions of southern Gaul. Abdel Kechiche's La Graine et le Mulet hones in on one such community, located on the ocean, which exudes a laid-back, unforced rhythm and a slower pace of life for all of its residents. For many years, one such occupant, sexagenarian Slimane Beiji (Habib Boufares), has nurtured a single lifelong dream: to open up his own couscous and fish restaurant in the community. This dream appears ever more impossible when Slimane is promptly laid off, but he soon lands on the idea of occupying a wrecked boat and converting it into the restaurant. Meanwhile, the gentleman has recently divorced his wife, Souad (Bouraouia Marzouk), and has moved into a hotel owned by his lover, Latifa (Hatika Karaoui), but Slimane's extended family continues to meet at Souad's home on a weekly basis for her beloved fish couscous, where they expostulate their views on life and reflect on the state of their relationships with one another. In a tangentially related subplot, Slimane's oldest son, Hamid (Abdelhamid Aktouche), enjoys an extramarital affair, ignoring his nuptials with his Russian wife and the presence of his infant boy, and thus endangering the sanctity and happiness of his family. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
