To a non-French speaker, the word La Pagaille looks charming, elegant, even tidy. However, it means "a mess," and a mess is just what the happily divorced Martin gets into when he and his ex-wife Brigitte, the mother of his children, rekindle their long-dormant relationship and announce that they intend to move back in together. Not only do the children find this whole thing confusing, but the husband's and the wife's lovers are equally befuddled. Add to that the need for Martin to meet Brigitte's lover and vice-versa, and you have the beginnings of a mess. When it begins to seem to Brigitte's former lover that he has offended the Muslims with a book he translated and he is slated for death, the whole thing grows yet more complicated. In this comedy, this list only scratches the surface of the messes these people must confront. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In this somewhat unusual romance, the two lovers go to bed with one another first (almost before the films opening credits are done) and then spend the rest of the film getting to know one another, while they carry on with their passionate affair. Malo is married to a very pleasant man, an antique dealer who has provided her with an exquisitely appointed, if unusual, home in the form of a houseboat on the river Seine. They also have a teen-aged son. Yves, the other lover, is also married. While Malo isn't prepared to leave her husband, whom she still loves, she is certainly having a lot of fun with this new man in her life, and they have sex with the frequency and urgency of teenagers. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Hubert (Daniel Colas) is an anthropologist who is shipwrecked with his friend on a remote island in this black cannibal comedy. His friend ends up on the menu of three beautiful female cannibals, but they keep Hubert around as a boytoy. A mid-movie flashback explains how the trio of femmes became flesh eaters. They soon tire of live man meat when they feel the pangs of hunger once again. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Ania Francos, this tragi-comedy follows the diagnosis and internment of lawyer Lola Friedlander (Carole Laure) in the cancer ward of a large clinic. There Lola encounters Marie-Aude (Jeanne Moreau) and Cathy (Dominique Labourier), two very different patients from opposite walks of life who each contribute to Lola's adjustment. Given that the doctor at this clinic is a media-star, there is a certain aura of unreality to the story that also permeates some of the episodes involving subsidiary characters like Lola's boyfriend or her archetypal Jewish family. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

- Carole Laure, Sami Frey, (more)
Delphine Seyrig plays a middle-aged woman coping with an ungovernable present and holding out hopes of escaping to a more pleasant past. She leaves her current residence to retreat to her provincial French hometown. Here she dreams of locating and rekindling an old love. Seyrig is less inscrutable here than in her debut feature-film appearance Last Year in Marienbad (61), though the character is just as complex and difficult to please. Grain of Sand was released in France in 1983 as Le Grain de Sable. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
