Billie Seward Movies

Discovered by vaudeville comic Ed Wynn, brunette Billie Seward later sang with Ben Bernie's orchestra and appeared in the final edition of the Ziegfeld Follies. She was awarded a contract with Columbia Pictures in 1934 and performed the usual starlet duties: leading in B-Westerns and playing minor roles in more mainstream fare. Seward's contract was terminated in 1935 and an old friend, Tim McCoy, hired her for one of his low-budget Puritan Westerns. Today, she is perhaps best remembered for playing a mystery lady in Charlie Chan at Treasure island (1939) and as Cousin Delight in Li'l Abner (1940). Her career ended in 1944. ~ Hans J. Director Robert Stevenson collaborated with novelist Aldous Huxley and theatrical-producer John Houseman on the screenplay for this 1944 adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's gothic romance Jane Eyre. After several harrowing years in an orphanage, where she was placed by a supercilious relative for exhibiting the forbidden trait of "willfulness," Jane Eyre (Joan Fontaine) secures work as a governess. Her little charge, French-accented Adele (Margaret O'Brien), is pleasant enough. But Jane's employer, the brooding, tormented Edward Rochester (Orson Welles), terrifies the prim young governess. Under Jane's gentle influence, Rochester drops his forbidding veneer, going so far as to propose marriage to Jane. But they are forbidden connubial happiness when it is revealed that Rochester is still married to a gibbering lunatic whom he is forced to keep locked in his attic. Rochester reluctantly sends Jane away, but she returns, only to find that the insane wife has burned down the mansion and rendered Rochester sightless. In the tradition of Victorian romances, this purges Rochester of any previous sins, making him a worthy mate for the loving Jane. The presence of Orson Welles in the cast (he receives top billing), coupled with the dark, Germanic style of the direction and photography, has led some impressionable cineasts to conclude that Welles, and not Stevenson, was the director. To be sure, Welles contributed ideas throughout the filming; also, the script was heavily influenced by the Mercury Theater on the Air radio version of Jane Eyre, on which Welles, John Houseman and musical director Bernard Herrmann all collaborated. But Jane Eyre was made at 20th Century-Fox, a studio disinclined to promote the auteur theory; like most Fox productions, this is a work by committee rather than the product of one man. This in no way detracts from the overall excellence of the film; of all adaptations of Jane Eyre (it had previously been filmed in 1913, 1915 and 1921, and has been remade several times since), this 1943 version is one of the best. Detective Chester Morris and his nosy wife Jean Parker set up housekeeping in a small Reno hotel room, whence Morris conducts his investigation of a kidnap case. It appears that the abduction has some tenuous connection with a recent bank robbery. As Morris digs deeper, he finds that virtually all of his neighbors either have something to do with cases at hand, or else they have something to hide. Its screenplay sticking fairly closely to the source novel by Daniel Mainwaring (writing under the pseudonym of Geoffrey Holmes), No Hands on the Clock is a rare foray into mystery for Paramount's action-picture production team of Pine and Thomas. In true "Grand Hotel" fashion, the film manages to keep several subplots going at once, all of them resolved in one fell swoop by fadeout time. Former gun moll Gladys (Billie Seward) hopes to find happiness with honest truckdriver Joe (William Haade), but her past catches up with her in the form of escaped convict Jim (Paul Guilfoyle). Lunch-counter waitress Annie (Gale Storm) allows gas station attendant Vince (Dick Hogan) to flirt with her. Young mother-to-be Ruth (Adele Pearce), on the verge of giving birth, is unexpectedly reunited with her AWOL sailor husband Mat (Gaylord Pendleton). Quack doctor Joseph (J. M. Movie buffs are nearly unanimous in agreement: Charlie Chan at Treasure Island is the best of the Sidney Toler "Charlie Chan" entries. The film wastes no time getting started, with Chan (Toler) and his son Jimmy (Sen Yung) on hand when Charlie's writer friend Paul Essex (Louis Jean Heydt) dies on the Honolulu Clipper while en route to San Francisco. The police rule Essex' death a suicide, but Chan believes differently. He follows the trail of clues to the mysterious Zodiac, a crooked spiritualist. The oriental detective is aided in his investigation by Rhadini (Cesar Romero), a charming stage magician who hopes to expose Zodiac as a phony and blackmailer. After several plot twists and a couple of additional murders, all the likely suspects are gathered together during one of Rhadini's performances at Treasure Island, the San Francisco branch of the 1939 World's Fair. In a truly eerie climax, mystic Eve (Pauline Moore) who really does have psychic powers, prepares to name the killer. The revelation of the culprit is a genuine surprise, staged with topnotch showmanship by director Norman Foster, whose wife Sally Blane (Loretta Young's sister) appears in a small role as Essex's widow. In his second Western for low-budget Puritan Pictures, Tim McCoy comes to the aid of a pretty ranch owner whose property is in danger of being usurped by a crooked saloon owner. Ruth McArthur (Billie Seward) cannot pay her late father's debt and lawyer Eric McGillis (Robert McKenzie) advises her to sell out to saloon owner Harry DeLong (Wheeler Oakman). But Ruth, who is awaiting the arrival of her brother, Alan, demurs and DeLong has Alan (Rex Lease) murdered by hired gunslinger Bill Slater (Jack Rockwell). Cowboy Tim Hanlon (McCoy), who had befriended Alan, is accused of the killing and imprisoned. Convincing the sheriff of his innocence, Hanlon is allowed to search for the real culprit. When he arrives at the McArthur ranch, Tim is mistaken by Ruth for the long-absent Alan and goes along in order to help her. Bankrolled by Banker Wells (George Pearce), Tim and a gang of workmen begin to repair the local dam, despite the preventive efforts of DeLong and his men. DeLong shows the sheriff (Jack Clifford) a note that ostensibly proves Tim's guilt in Alan's death but the ruse backfires as only the killer would know that Tim isn't the real Alan. Despite an overly complicated plot, The Man From Guntown was well mounted and rather elaborate for a B-Western. Co-written by Thomas H. In his first of 16 Westerns for independent producer A.W. Hackel, Johnny Mack Brown is Branded a Coward when instead of preventing a saloon hold-up, he is spotted cowering behind the bar. The reason for Johnny Hume's reticence is to be found in his background: 20 years earlier, little Johnny was orphaned when his parents' wagon was attacked by a gang of outlaws headed by the infamous "Cat" (Yakima Canutt). As the grown Johnny explains to stuttering sidekick Oscar (Syd Saylor), he has been "yellow ever since." Johnny's courage is tested once again when the two friends witness a stage hold-up. After chasing the outlaws away, Johnny and Oscar escort the stage into the town of Lawless, AZ, where female passenger Ethel Carson (Billie Seward) extols Johnny's prowess with a gun. To his embarrassment, Johnny is elected deputy marshal. Secrets from the past keep resurfacing and Johnny must constantly fight his own fears. In the end, the former coward proves his real worth in a final face-to-face struggle with the leader of the stage robbers (Robert Kortman), a villain patterning himself after the original Cat. During the fight, an unusual birthmark on the outlaw's arm reveals him to be Johnny's own brother Billy. Long thought killed in the massacre, Billy has instead been raised by the original, now deceased Cat. More a whodunit than a straight Western, this Tim McCoy series entry from Columbia featured a cowboy returning to his homestead to find his brother, the sheriff, killed and the family of his girl somehow involved. Dissatisfied with the investigation by newly appointed Sheriff Ludlow (Jack Clifford), Tim O'Neil (McCoy) discovers that Jed Harmon (Frank Sheridan), the father of Myra (Billie Seward), Tim's sweetheart, is being blackmailed by Kramer (Edward Earle). Ludlow, who is in cahoots with Kramer, arrests Jed but Tim helps the old man escape. Confessing in writing to an old crime, Jed is left alone when Tim is called out on an errand. Kramer enters the room and shoots Jed, making it look like a suicide. But Tim later demonstrates how Kramer could have left the body in a room bolted from the inside. There is a final confrontation between Tim and Kramer, which leaves the villain dead and Tim with a final resolution to avenge his brother's murder. As it turns out, Jed is still alive and proven innocent in the old charge of murder to which he earlier confessed. Tim McCoy's handsome sidekick in this and two subsequent Westerns, Robert Allen, would later star in his own B-Western series for Columbia. When Dave and his shutterbug pal Andy Blane (Wallace Ford) have a falling out over gorgeous Ann Jordan (Billie Seward), Andy retaliates by arranging a frame that will get Dave fired. Disgraced and blacklisted, Dave gets back into the good graces of the newsreel company when he films the assassination of a foreign potentate. The story is for all intents and purposes over at this point, but Columbia decided to "hypo" the last reel by throwing a chase between Dave and the assassins. Directed by former screenwriter Ford I. Beebe, this Tim McCoy Western from Columbia co-starred Robert Allen, a handsome studio contractee groomed for Western stardom. Allen played Johnny Kane, an escaped prisoner wrongly convicted of murder. McCoy, as Texas Ranger Tim McDonald, believes in Johnny's innocence and prevents a fellow lawman (Charles "Slim" Whitaker) from killing him. Kicked out of the corps for helping Johnny escape, Tim goes to Mill Valley where he takes over the local newspaper, bequeathed to him by Alexander (Samuel S. Hinds), the slain publisher of "the Ledger." He lands in the middle of a political struggle between two factions, one of whom is headed by Daniel Heston (Guy Usher), a corrupt politician, and the man who killed the publisher. Tim takes up the fight against Heston, who hires gunslinger Garvey (Jack Rockwell) to assassinate him. The former ranger is saved by Johnny, who arrives at the last moment to rope the gun from Garvey's hand. Heston retaliates by revealing Tim to have been dishonorably discharged from the rangers and "the Ledger" is mysteriously fire-bombed. Despite the odds, Tim and Gloria (Billie Seward), Alexander's daughter, manage to print an election day edition by using old wallpaper. A button found at the scene of a crime proves to belong to Heston and both Tim and Johnny are vindicated. Ostensibly based on James Oliver Curwood's Caryl of the Mountain, but bearing little or no resemblance to the 1935 Rin-Tin-Tin Jr. vehicle bearing that title, this Northwest melodrama stars Kermit Maynard as McKenna, a mounted police officer trailing the gang that kidnapped mining engineer Mason (John Elliott). The search leads to Ghost Mountain, where McKenna and his partner, Windy (Fuzzy Knight), encounter the missing man's daughter, Jane (Billie Seward). They also confront the gang of outlaws, who are eventually defeated after a chase through a labyrinth of caves and tunnels leading into mountain itself. Generous stock footage from such previous Columbia aviation epics as Flight and Dirigible helped to make Air Hawks (working title: Air Fury) seem more costly than it really was. Real-life pilot Wiley Post, who'd recently grabbed the headlines with his daring around-the-world flight, plays himself, while the acting relief is provided by Ralph Bellamy (hero), Tala Birrell (heroine) and Douglass Dumbrille (villain). The plot has something to do with an infra-red "death ray" which figures prominently in the rivalry between two competing air services. Singled out for critical praise was the sound-effects work by Edward Bernds, who later became a prolific Columbia "B"-picture and 2-reeler director. Tim McCoy's final Western for Columbia, his home since 1931, Riding Wild is the old story of a range war between cattle barons and homesteaders. The feud begins when rancher Clay Stevens (Niles Welch) hires a gang of cattle rustlers whose crimes he blames on a group of nesters. Neighboring rancher Tim Malloy (McCoy) sides with the homesteaders and organizes a resistance movement. In retaliation, Stevens hires Tex Ravelle (also McCoy), Tim's lookalike, to kill the upstart rancher and lead the homesteaders into a death trap. Tim, however, outwits Tex and lives to face Stevens in a final gun duel. LeSaint) and his neighbor, Lafe Brennan (Jack Rutherford), each believing the other to be behind a series of cattle rustlings in Apache Basin. Hired to look into the matter by commission agent Hadley Graves (Guy Usher), range detective Tim Condon (McCoy) discovers that neither is the culprit. But before he can do anything about it, he is framed in the murder of Pegleg Sanderson (George "Gabby" Hayes), a crime actually committed by a couple of Brennan's henchmen. Flamboyant, egomaniacal theatrical impresario Oscar Jaffe (John Barrymore) transforms chorus girl Mildred Plotka (Carole Lombard) into leading lady Lily Garland, the toast of Broadway. Once she's ascended to stardom, Mildred/Lily cannot abide Jaffe's obsessive control of her life and career. When he hires a private detective (Edgar Kennedy) to keep tabs on her, it's the last straw. The hero's operation is a small one, but it offers formidable competition for the rival firm owned by Tim's distant relative Robinson (Joseph Crehan). The plot thickens when Tim falls in love with Robinson's daughter Barbara (Billie Seward). In an exciting climax, Tim is obliged to stretch a telephone wire across a sickeningly deep canyon -- and if there's any doubt that he accomplishes this, it's only because the doubter has never seen the star in action. When Kitty gets a modelling job thanks to Bob, she feels beholden to him, even though she still carries a torch for Bill.
