A man struggles to come to term with his neuroses and a startling secret in this independent comedy-drama from writer and director Jean-Marc Piche. As the story opens, Leo (Yannick Bisson) is lying in his bathtub, trying to work up the nerve to kill himself with the razor blade in his hand. We learn that Leo suffers from severe agoraphobia and has been unable to leave his apartment for the past two years. Thankfully, Leo's career as a website designer allows him to work at home, and he's been fortunate enough to meet Carly (Pascale Bussieres), a beautiful and caring woman who is willing to deal with his problems. However, as taken as Carly is with Leo's wit and intelligence, she's come to the end of her patience with his phobias, and isn't about to continue their relationship unless he's willing to get help. But Leo can't take the next step, and during a conversation with his would-be gangster landlord Joe (Kenneth Walsh), we discover that there's more to Leo's troubles than he's been letting on. Nothing Really Matters received its world premiere at the 2008 Montreal World Film Festival; Gord Downie, lead singer with the popular Canadian rock band the Tragically Hip, appears in a supporting role as a thief. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This weekly, 60-minute series was based on the true story of one of the FBI's most unusual operatives. Deaf since the age of 18 months, Sue Thomas neither asked for nor received sympathy for her handicap at any time in her life: Indeed, as a youngster she was known to periodically bloody the noses of kids who taunted her in school. As an adult, Thomas became an accomplished pianist, and earned a political science degree from Massachusetts Springfield College. According to the chronology of the TV series, Sue was working as a fingerprint analyst at the FBI when agent Jack Hudson suddenly realized the value of her lip-reading skills. Thus did Sue become an agent herself, specializing in surveillance and deliberately seeking out the most exciting and dangerous assignments. Deaf actress Deanne Bray starred as Sue Thomas, with Yannick Bisson as Jack Hudson and "hearing-ear" dog Levi as himself. Though never shirking in its action and adventure content, Sue Thomas: F.B. Eye was family friendly and upbeat in the best PAX Network tradition. Created by Dave Alan Johnson and Gary R. Johnson, the series premiered October 13, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A Canadian-Australian co-production, the 20-episode adventure series Gold was set in New Zealand during that country's "gold rush" in the 1860s. The central character was Johnny Rogan (Yannick Bisson), an 18-year-old Canadian who accompanied his older brother to the Land Down Under in hopes of striking it rich. After his brother's death, Johnny pitched camp in the town of Dunstan, entering into a partnership with rogueish prospector Henry Garrick (Andy Anderson) and finding time to squire the local pubkeeper's daughter, Lily Owens (Lucy Bayler). Originally shown on Canadian TV through the auspices of Alliance Atlantis, Gold was later released to video in "feature film" form, with selected half-hour episodes stitched together and rechristened with such titles as Gold: A Fistful of Gold, Gold: The Merchants of Venus, and Gold: The World's a Play. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
