A hotshot political strategist fights to protect his clients while experiencing an unexpected crisis of conscience in this sharp-edged political comedy starring Rob Lowe. Paul Turner (Lowe) has a gift for spin. When the media catches wind of a Kentucky governor's extramarital affairs, Turner has a plan to save the day. Likewise, when a California senator is targeted for blackmail, Turner works overtime to sweep the scandal under the rug. Meanwhile, an ambitious doctor (Carrie-Anne Moss) reveals her intention to run for governor, prompting the seasoned strategist to warn her of the difficult road ahead. Later, just when it seems that Turner can't stoop any lower for the sake of his troublesome clients, he learns that sometimes fighting fair is the only way to come out on top. Eric McCormack, Julie Bowen, and David Harbour co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Papua New Guinea is a nation that in many respects is still catching up to the present day: The country didn't gain its independence from Australia until 1975, subsistence farming remains the dominant trade, and most of the nation lives in poverty, without electricity or running water. One thing Papua New Guinea does have is a beautiful coastline, and while body surfing has been popular among the locals for a long time, surfboards were unknown there until 1980, when an Australian pilot mistakenly left his behind during a stop in the city of Vanimo. Since then, board surfing has become popular in Papua New Guinea, but while some pursue it as a pastime, many young men and women aspire to become professional surfers in order to escape the cycle of poverty as major surfing competitions have come to the country. Adam Pesce offers a look into the Papua New Guinea surfing scene and the high stakes of competition in the documentary Splinters. The film also profiles a number of aspiring surfing champions, including two sisters striving to make a name for themselves in a male-dominated sport and a pair of close friends who become fierce rivals on the waves. Splinters received its world premiere at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Drugs, money, and failing relationships irritate the already difficult relationship between an elderly woman and her daughter in this comedy drama from the writing and directing team of Sebastián Silva and Pedro Peirano. Isadora (Bélgica Castro) is in her nineties and shares an apartment stuffed with a lifetime of memories and souvenirs with her second husband, Enrique (Alejandro Sieveking). Isadora is starting to sink into senility, and her poor health makes it hard for her to leave the flat, so Enrique must look after her. Before long, Enrique gets some assistance from Rosario (Claudia Celedón), but it's not the sort of help he wants; Rosario has a weakness for cocaine and a long history of launching failed get-rich-quick schemes, one of which has just bottomed out. Rosario's idea of coming to the rescue involves claiming power of attorney over her mother and selling her flat out from under her, which will provide them both with a quick influx of cash but no security for Isadora and Enrique. As Isadora and Rosario argue about who controls the older woman's fate, Enrique and Rosario's lover, Beatrice (Catalina Saavedra), find themselves caught in a long-simmering family rivalry. Gatos Viejos (aka Old Cats) received its North American premiere at the 2010 New York Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
