A cardsharp comes up with the ultimate system for beating the casinos at their own game in this high-style caper comedy. Barney Lincoln (Warren Beatty) is a footloose playboy with a taste for gambling and an ingenious scheme for winning at the leading casinos in Europe. Barney discovers that nearly all of the major gambling houses use playing cards manufactured by the same company; by breaking into their plant and subtly altering the printing plates, he's able to mark the cards with a code only he can read, and he is soon pulling in record winnings across the continent. However, Barney's secret is discovered by his girlfriend Angel McGinnis (Suzannah York), a successful fashion designer, which might not be a problem if her father, "Manny" McGinnis (Clive Revill) weren't a top inspector at Scotland Yard. Manny approaches Barney and makes him a deal -- he won't reveal his secret about the cards if Barney will help him catch Harry Dominion (Eric Porter), a high-level international drug trafficker. Unfortunately, Barney's sleuthing goes awry after a certain amount of initial success, and when Harry gets wind of what he's been doing, he retaliates by kidnapping Angel and demanding repayment of his loss of sales. A successful ad man engages in illicit affairs in this romantic comedy satire. Serge (Serge Gainsbourg) is an annual winner at the advertising awards festival held annually in Venice. When he meets the pretty British woman Evelyne (Jane Birkin), he sets her up in an apartment and plans to leave his pregnant wife. The newfound love of the immensely shallow couple is shattered when Evelyne runs off to marry a speedboat racer. Harry and Marianne were once lovers and he makes a pass at her. Meanwhile, Jean-Paul makes a pass at Harry's daughter. After some drinking, Harry and Jean-Paul fight, resulting in Harry being pushed into the pool. Three social rejects plan an elaborate bank robbery. Ticky (Michael Dunn) is the dwarf and mastermind of the caper who is hopelessly in love with his female accomplice. They plan to murder the daughter of a bank president and replace her with a look-alike at the victim's private school. She manages to get all the keys to the strongboxes, and Ticky and his other accomplice make off with the loot. Ticky kills the man when he suspects he will make off with the money. He stands on shore as the woman masquerading as the banker's daughter swims out to sea. She would rather die than be loved by the hideously malevolent dwarf. Serge (Serge Gainsbourg) is sent to France by New York mobsters to secure a shipment of heroin. The supplier in France is being ripped off by a middleman who has gone into business for himself. His first order of business is to wipe out the customers of a drug house who have bought their drugs from a rival dealer. After slaying the bunch, with the help of a maniacal hippie (Paul Nicholas), he is off to Paris. Someone tips off the rival gang of Serge's arrival and he is met at the airport by two thugs. A pretty woman he met on the plane (Jane Birkin) finds him slumped in his car and takes him home with her. The two soon are entwined in a passionate embrace. Emery (Curt Jurgens) is the French drug kingpin who along with Serge is sought by the inspector (Gabriele Ferzetti). ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Among the complications is his growing regard for the woman who plays his cinematic wife (Jane Birkin). She may wind up replacing his actual wife in real life. Jeanne confesses murder to a young priest (Mathieu Carriere) who is also her cousin, and after she tells him the story of how she has ruined the lives of a long succession of men, she shamelessly seduces the priest as well. Her story told in flashback, Jeanne gets off to a rocky start as an heiress: her father died while cussing her out for her low-down ways.
