This third installment of the blockbuster Japanese sci-fi series 20th Century Boys 3 unfurls in 2017 A.D. - popularly (and ominously) known as 'Friend Era Year 3' - when a menacing character called World President Friend rules all of humanity. After a lethal virus ravages and wipes out much of Tokyo, city officials administer the construction of a wall around the city and place severe restrictions on the lives of residents. Friend promptly informs everyone that on August 20th, 2017, evil extraterrestrials will wipe out mankind and only those individuals who believe in Friend will be saved. Yet at the same time, a subversive movement to stop Friend forms. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Reflecting the Japanese fascination with western culture, this musically-charged comedy concerns Souichi, a sweet natured, slightly backward pop fan who aspires to recording stardom. He naively moves to the city of Tokyo expecting to hit the charts overnight as a pioneer of soft, sentimental romantic ballads. Naturally, that doesn't happen, but Souichi encounters even greater success with an oddball gig that involves donning demon makeup and a black cape as a front man for the band Detroit Metal City. By day, Souichi remains the ineffectual and timid young man well-liked by everyone; by night, he's a crass, loud, frightening monster named Johannes Klauser II who earns his paycheck screaming rants onstage about rape and murder, to the delight of thousands of shrieking goth metal fans, some of whom actually believe he is a demon incarnate. His life grows problematic when he reencounters and falls hard for a university crush, Ms. Aikawa (Rosa Kato) - an equally timid, beautiful young pop critic who will almost certainly disapprove of his lifestyle after dark - if she ever finds out. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Is bad love better than no love at all? A woman finds herself pondering that question in this dark comedy from filmmaker Yukihiko Tsutsumi. When she was a teenager, Yukie Morita (Miki Nakatani) was the sort of girl whom people tended to ignore, and her efforts to stand out among her fellow students invariably ended in failure. The one thing that made others take notice of Yukie didn't help her much -- her father attempted to rob a bank, but his scheme failed so miserably it earned him lasting local notoriety. Desperate to start over, Yukie left the coastal town where she was born and moved to Osaka, where she worked a series of unglamorous jobs. In her early thirties, Yukie waits tables at a diner, but she's head over heels in love with her live-in boyfriend, Isao Hayama (Hiroshi Abe). Yukie is so thrilled to have someone to love that she's willing to ignore the fact Isao drinks too much, throws away his money gambling, can't hold a job, and has a hair-trigger temper that results in broken furniture and upended dinner tables on a regular basis. But is she really as happy as she claims to be? ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Released into Japanese theaters in 2006, director Shusuke Kaneko's stylish adaptation of the best selling manga quickly trampled The Da Vinci Code on Japanese screens and subsequently and set box office records in Hong Kong and all across Asia. The plot picks up as aimless law student Light Yagami (Tetsuya Fujiwara) discovers a mysterious notebook in the middle of the street. Soon thereafter, Light discovers that if he writes a name in the notebook, that person will instantly die (generally of a heart attack). Of course it doesn't take long for Light to realize the extraordinary power he now holds, and before long he hatches a plan to rid the planet of crime by scribbling the name of notorious criminals in the pages of the powerful notebook and make the world a safer place for decent citizens everywhere. But Light isn't alone in his mission, because his new companion Ryuk - a flying god of death who only Light can see and who also happens to be the true owner of the notebook - is always there to egg him on and get a little laugh from the criminal holocaust. Over the course of the next few weeks, Light does away with millions of nefarious baddies and the global crime rate drops by seventy percent. Still, the police aren't too happy that a regular civilian seems to be taking the law into his own hands. Perhaps the only person capable of discovering Light's true identity is L (Kenichi Matsuyama) - a brilliant teenage detective with a taste for sweets and remarkable deductive reasoning skills. When the police chief (Takeshi Kaga of the hit television series Iron Chef) - who also happens to be Light's father - is assigned the task of unmasking the elusive killer, things really start to get interesting. A fast paced, goth-infused, cat-and-mouse thriller, Death Note was followed at the box office by the equally successful sequel Death Note: The Last Name just a few short months later. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
