In this socially conscious drama with romantic overtones, Iris (Jane Fonda) is a working mother with a job at a large commercial bakery who is still getting over the death of her husband, though her circumstances don't give her much time to grieve. She's sharing her house with her two children, Kelly (Martha Plimpton) and Richard (Harley Cross), her unemployed sister Sharon (Swoosie Kurtz), and her thuggish brother-in-law. The tensions at home become even greater when teenage Kelly announces that she's pregnant. One of the few bright spots in her life is her blossoming friendship with Stanley (Robert DeNiro), a nice guy who works in the bakery's cafeteria. However, Iris starts noticing a few odd things about Stanley and it slowly dawns on her that he can't read. When the boss figures this out, Stanley loses his job -- an especially troubling development, as Stanley has just had to put his father in a retirement home. The daughter of a prominent and powerful Australian politician (Chris Wiggins), Cleo Spearfield (Kim Braden) incurs her father's wrath by becoming a reporter, with the Vietnam war as her "beat." When not dodging bullets and negotiating rice paddies, Cleo is wooed by two attractive gentemen, gonzo American journalist Tom Border (Steve Railsback) and Murdoch-like British publishing mogul Lord Jack Cruze (Christopher Plummer. A super breed of rats is accidentally given large doses of steroids, and the rodents grow five to ten times their usual size. While the city is being overrun, a science teacher (Sam Groom) and a health inspector (Sara Botsford) struggle to survive while plotting the rats' demise. Margot Kidder and Annie Potts star in this distaff buddy picture concerning two friends undergoing a series of misadventures in their love lives. Potts plays Bonnie Howard, the wife of Stanley (Robert Carradine), an immature child/man who irresponsibly spends most of his time racing cars and getting drunk. Bonnie also happens to be pregnant, but the father of her unborn child does not happen to be Stanley. Rather than hit Stanley in the face with that fact, she decides to leave him. As she heads for town to obtain an abortion, she runs into the foul-mouthed man-hunter Rita Harris (Margot Kidder in a blonde wig and tight pants). The two characters get involved in a number of vignettes, with the humor arising from the contrast between the streetwise Rita and the relatively innocent Bonnie. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

Three teenage boys yearn for their first sexual experience in The First Time. Kenny (Wes Stern) is sent to Buffalo for the summer to visit his grandmother. Terminally bored, he writes letters back home to his friends telling them what a good time he is having. Of particular interest is a bordello called Rosie's across the Canadian border. Kenny had overheard the conversation of two men describing Rosie's and his imagination runs wild in one of his letters. Soon his pals Mike (Rick Kelman) and Tommy (Wink Roberts) arrive on their way to camp wanting Kenny to show them the famed bordello. The trio drive around until Kenny identifies an abandoned Canadian warehouse as Rosie's. They meet Anna (Jacqueline Bisset), and believe since she has no passport, she must be a prostitute. The four go back to the U.S. where they check into a motel reserved by Mike and Tommy. Comedy ensues when the inexperienced young men are reduced to behaving like scared little boys when they realize they are not ready to take the plunge. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide
