Giorgio Perlasca was an Italian cattle dealer who was sympathetic to the fascist cause until September 8, 1943. Perlasca was in Budapest, Hungary, on a business trip when he had the opportunity to see first hand how Hungarian Jews were being treated by German occupying forces. Shocked by the cruelty and violence he saw, Perlasca had a sudden change of heart, and hatched a plan to help the Jews escape to freedom by impersonating a Spanish consul. As a result of Perlasca's brave actions, the lives of five thousand people were spared that day. Perlasca is a historical drama originally produced for Italian television which reenacts Perlasca's remarkable true story; Luca Zingaretti leads the cast as the daring Italian businessman. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The second word in the title to this film, Stefano Quantestorie harkens to the parental rebuke given to children who concoct fabulous tales to account for their little misdeeds: how many stories will you tell me? In this peculiar, comic film, all the stories are about Stefano (Maurizio Nichetti), and recount possible lives he might have had, or has had, or experiences he has had, or might have had. Eventually, the Stefanos begin to pile up in places, and Stefanos from one episode interact with wives or lovers Stefano has had in another one. It is impossible to describe why such confusion is at all watchable, especially when so many similar movies have been disastrous, but good acting throughout and thoughtful direction won this film a place in several reviewer's hearts, and it was well-received both in Italy and elsewhere. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In an innovative collaboration, the maker of this movie got the cooperation of the mainstream director (Ettore Scola) to shoot this film on the set for the film Captain Fracassa's Journey. While the latter film is being made, the characters in this film are all attempting to break into show biz, or are coping with their lowly status in it. One character is a would-be screenwriter who is attempting to corner the producer of the film in order to give him his first script -- which may or may not have been commissioned. Two extras have a lot of fun playing bloodied-up corpses in the main movie. Another character is a young mother, hoping to get an acting part. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Anna (Francesca Prandi) and Bianca (Stella Vordemann) have gotten together to study for their exams at Bianca's country house. There is an unusually charged emotional undercurrent between these teens, which at first might be explained by the expected arrival of an eligible man later in the weekend. The tension dissolves briefly when their mutual friend Daniela (Amanda Sandrelli) comes by for a visit, then resumes. It seems that each girl has conceived a lesbian passion for the other, and each girl is afraid to admit this to herself, much less confess it to her friend. Nonetheless, by the end of the weekend, they have passed over this hurdle. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this slightly science-fictiony romantic comedy, Ivan is a nice but rather clueless young man who works for a woman about his own age, a tough and ruthless person who is all business. He is so clueless that he is about to marry this unsavory person, much to the dismay of his ex-ballerina mother. He is doing his banking one day when a group of robbers comes in, stealing not only from the bank, but from its customers. He narrowly manages to escape them by heading for the basement and taking a doorway he never noticed before which should lead to the basement of the Chinese restaurant next door. Instead, he finds himself on the beach on another planet, one with two suns. There, he meets a professor and his daughter. The girl falls in love with him at first sight and returns through the doorway after him to persuade him to marry her. Other denizens of the second world also go through the doorway, and before the end of the show, a number of unlikely marriages have been proposed and accepted. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Two of Italy's top comics, Massimo Troisi and Roberto Benigni teamed up to write (with Giuseppe Bertolucci), direct, and star in this comedy about two men accidentally thrown back to the year 1492. In a series of comic sketches, two friends, Saverio (Benigni) and Mario (Troisi) suddenly find themselves in 1492 while on a drive in the Italian countryside. Saverio is enthusiastic, but Mario just wants a ticket home, until he meets the nubile Pia (Amanda Sandrelli). Then Saverio suggests that if they can prevent Christopher Columbus from sailing to the New World, America would never be discovered and the Native Americans would not suffer. Along with this scheme come skits like Saverio explaining a few modern machines to Leonardo Da Vinci. In-between these highlights are lower ebbs in the comic flow, making the end result slightly under the capabilities of both comedians. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
