Carter (Noah Wyle) tries to aid a youngster afflicted with muscular dystrophy. After briefly reviving a young mother (Rachel Singer) dying of cancer so that the woman can bid goodbye to her family, head nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) suddenly realizes that her own life is figuratively slipping away. Determined to live the rest of her existence to the fullest, Carol leaves County General for good, heading to Seattle for what she hopes will be a romantic reunion with another ER alumnus. Meanwhile, Chen (Ming-Na) is worried about Carter's (Noah Wyle) precarious mental condition; and after attending his father's funeral, Greene (Anthony Edwards) tries to mend fences with his estranged daughter (Yvonne Zima). The ending of "Such Sweet Sorrow" was one of the best-kept secrets of the 1999-2000 TV season -- and on the off-chance that the reader hasn't seen the episode, it would be unfair to spoil the surprise here. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this sequel to the second-season Touched by an Angel episode "Flesh and Blood", the prayers of Monica's former "client" Kate Prescott (Valerie Harper) have been answered, and her wayward son Tom (Anthony Michael Hall) has returned home after seven years. But though innocent of the murder charges that had compelled him to run away from home so long ago, the troublesome Tom has still not completely reformed, and continues to abuse drugs. Even worse, Tom's bad habits are imperiling the future of his own son Dylan (Justin Cooper). Two new doctors join the Emergency staff at Chicago's County General Hospital as ER begins its sixth season: Pediatric resident Cleo Finch (Michael Michele) and Croatian émigré Luka Kovac (Goran Visnjic). Getting things off to a lively start, a truck crash through a coffee shop window results in a larger than usual volume of ER patients. Elsewhere, rumors fly that the prickly Dr. Romano (Paul McCrane) will replace the retiring Dr. Anspaugh as chief of staff -- a contingency that Greene (Anthony Edwards) tries to prevent, only to be ruthlessly undercut by the ambitious Weaver (Laura Innes). John Carter (Noah Wyle) treats his former sister-in-law Elaine (Rebecca De Mornay) after she has a minor accident, thereby triggering a whole new romantic chapter in Carter's life. At first, things go relatively smoothly, but complication quickly set in, forcing Carol's Lamaze coach, Greene (Anthony Edwards), to skip Elizabeth Corday's special Thanksgiving dinner. As a result, poor Corday (Alex Kingston) is left alone to entertain Greene's irascible father (John Cullum) and surly daughter (Yvonne Zima). Carol (Julianna Margulies) goes out on a limb to help the pregnant, heroin-addicted Meg (Martha Plimpton). Dr. Dave (Erik Palladino) may have caused the explosion that has been blamed on Cleo Finch (Michael Michele). After months of dating the acerbic and outspoken Sherry Dempsey (Marsha Mason), Martin (John Mahoney) decides it is time to pop the question. This does not rest well with Martin's sons, Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) and Niles (David Hyde Pierce), who have never warmed up to Sherry -- and are even less enamored of her once they learn some shocking facts about her past.
