A reformed bounty-hunter (Antonio De Teffe) comes to the town of Paso Bravo to avenge his murdered wife and daughter in this entertaining spaghetti western. Being that the man comes into town as an unarmed teetotaler, he is soon the object of scorn and ridicule by the hard-bitten locals. He gets beaten up and degraded a great deal, then finally decides to fight back and strap on the gun he swore never to wear again. This decision leads to a showdown with a sleazy, sadistic land baron (Eduardo Fajardo), turning in one of his most delightfully repellent performances. Intense characterizations and palpable tension make this film, director Salvatore Rosso's sole western, a treat for genre fans. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

Not originally a "Ringo" entry, this exciting spaghetti western was redubbed to exploit the series' popular success. Mark Damon plays Ringo (Johnny in the original), a bounty-hunter who is hired to nab outlaw leader Franco Derosa, but ends up taking on Derosa's entire gang and demolishing half of Coldstone City with dynamite before the situation is resolved. Skillfully directed by Sergio Corbucci, this action-packed film features a stirring Carlo Savina soundtrack and numerous explosions, as well as an engaging performance by Damon, star of Roger Corman's The Fall of the House of Usher. Corbucci went on to direct the immensely popular Django. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

The pirates are essentially the good guys in the Italian swashbuckler Black Buccaneer. Ricardo Montalban, tongue firmly in handsome cheek, plays an ex-slave who turns slave-trader himself. It's all for the purpose of abolishing slavery, of course, but Montalban doesn't let head-villain Vincent Price know that. Along the way, Montalban falls in love with Guilia Rubini, daughter of the governor of San Salvador, where most of the action takes place. Originally titled Gordon Il Pirata Nero, Black Buccaneer is better known under its alternate title Rage of the Buccaneers. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Very loosely based on its Biblical source, this standard Italian sword-and-sandal action film stars Orson Welles as an intense, inward-turning King Saul, deteriorating at the same time that David is rising in renown. The shepherd David (Ivo Payer) is sent to the Israelite forces with supplies for his older brothers when he first discovers who Goliath is -- the giant over nine feet tall that challenges any single warrior to meet him one-on-one in battle. If someone takes up his challenge, it would decide whether the Israelites or Philistines are victorious in their current stand-off. David's one-shot victory turns the tide and hastens Saul's decline. The monarch's lithesome daughters Merab and Michal are played by Eleonora Rossi-Drago and Giulia Rubini, his son Jonathan is portrayed by Pierre Cressoy, and Goliath by Kronos, a muscular "giant" of European circus and music hall circuits. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Some bad guys trash a saloon and kill a lot of people while waiting for a shipment of gold to arrive at the local bank in this entertaining Spaghetti Western from the director of Amanti dei Oltretomba. Eduardo Fajardo is as evil and over the top as usual, while Craig Hill is the hero of the piece as an ex-con (wrongfully accused, of course) who saves the day. Director Mario Caiano worked extensively in Westerns (Il Mio Nome e Shanghai Joe is marvelous), but is best known as a horror director, as is this film's co-cinematographer Sergio Martino (I Corpi Presentano Tracce di Violenza Carnale). Genre enthusiasts will recognize Nello Pazzafini, Spartaco Conversi, and Roberto Camardiel among the cast. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

Karl Boehm stars as Ludwig van Beethoven in this lavish Disney production, filmed on location in Europe. Beethoven is depicted as an intense, moody individual, who pours out his emotions in music--and in the occasional romance. The incessant din of the Napoleonic wars causes Beethoven to lose his hearing, after which he becomes more withdrawn than ever. He is humanized through the friendship of a blind youth, who gives him the fortitude to continue his work. Magnificent Rebel, originally telecast in two parts on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, was released theatrically in Europe. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

France's Fernandel and Italy's Alberto Sordi provide an abundance of laughs in Sous le Ciel de Provence (Under Skies of Provence). Fernandal plays a travelling salesman who makes the mistake of his life when he offers to help his fellow bus passenger, a very pretty and very pregnant young lady (Tina Roca). For purposes of decorum, the girl begs the salesman to pose as her husband. He agrees, little realizing how inextricably he will be involved in her family's trials and tribulations. A remake of the 1943 Italian comedy Four Steps in the Clouds, Sous le Ciel de Provence was wittily scripted by the great Cesar Zavattini. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A novel by Valerio Zurlini was the basis of the Italian Le Ragazze di Sanfrediano (The Girls of San Frediano). The story deals with the amorous escapades of handsome garage mechanic Bob (Antonio Cifariello). The first name in Bob's little black book is the tempestuous Tosca (Rosanna Podesta, who that same year played the title role in Helen of Troy). Before long, our hero throws Tosca over for a chorus dancer (Giulia Robini), a schoolteacher (Luciana Liberati) and a dress designer (Corinne Calvet). Through it all, Gina (Marcella Miriani), a girl who lives in Bob's apartment building, silently carries a torch for the grease-monkey Lothario. Just guess who Bob eventually winds up with. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
