Written and directed by Max Myers, Don't Let Go reflects on the musical past of siblings Jimmy Ray (Scott Wilson) and Billy Joe (Justin Shilton), who headed a rockabilly band called "The Texas Tumbleweeds" in the late '50s. Unfortunately, Jimmy Ray (Wilson) leaves the band for the bottle after his brother is murdered in a dispute over a woman. Forty years down the line, Jimmy Ray is an alcoholic and a distant father to his two children, young Billy Joe (Levi Kreis), and Johnny Blue (Brad Hawkins). At first, Jimmy Ray refuses to attend the concerts of his sons, who are burning up the rockabilly circuit themselves as leaders of "The Texas Two-Tones." The young band decides to hold a fundraiser in honor of the late Billy Joe (Shilton), and as a tribute to the 40 year anniversary of their father's former band. Though it seems that there is no chance of their father attending, Jimmy Ray happens upon his brother's old guitar in a junk shop and slings it over his shoulder in spite of himself. A young girl is faced with the emotional and personal responsibilities of an adult in this drama set in rural Massachusetts in 1963. Nora (Stephanie Castellarin) is a 12-year-old girl who has been forced into a maturity beyond her years; her mother Dolores (Patricia Kalember) lost three younger children in a car wreck years before, and ever since, she's been subject to episodes of severe depression, while her father, Martin (Brian Delate), must struggle to hold the family together while trying to find work as a carpenter. When John F. Kennedy is assassinated, Dolores (who once met the slain president) is thrown into an emotional tailspin and is placed in a mental institution in Boston. While Martin and the younger children move to the city to be near her, Nora must stay behind to continue with her schooling, and she is sent to live with her Aunt Rose (Katherine Ross), a dour woman with an unhappy marriage. Nora doesn't care for Rose, and Rose doesn't like having children in her house; when Rose discovers that Nora is writing a short story based on her family's troubles, she forbids her to submit it for a literary competition sponsored by Seventeen Magazine. Nora responds with the threat of blackmail, promising to reveal the truth about Rose's extramarital affairs to her husband unless she can publish the story. Empty Copper Sea is the reissue title for the made-for-TV mystery Travis McGee. Sam Elliot stars as Travis McGee, the "been there, done that" private eye created by novelist John McDonald. McGee's assignment this time is personal: he hopes to help clear the name of his old pal, charter boat skipper Van Harder (Richard Farnsworth). When his boat ran aground, a person was killed, and Harder has been accused of negligence. McGee, however, has reason to believe that the "victim" is still alive and part of a larger conspiracy. Based on Charles McCarry's 1979 novel The Better Angels, Wrong is Right is set in a near future in which violence has become something of a national sport and television news has fallen to tabloid depths (a significantly bigger stretch in 1982, when the film was released.) Star Sean Connery plays Patrick Hale, a globe-trotting reporter with access to a staggering array of world leaders. As the film opens, he has ventured to the Arab country of Hegreb to interview his old acquaintance, King Ibn Awad (Ron Moody). Awad has learned that the President of the United States (George Grizzard) may have issued orders for his removal; as a result, Awad is apparently making arrangements to deliver two mini-nuclear devices -- each about the size of a small suitcase -- to a terrorist, with the intention of detonating them in Israel and the United States, unless the President resigns. Killer bees migrate to the United States from Africa via South America in this disaster film produced and directed by the genre's chief architect, Irwin Allen, and written by Stirling Silliphant, scribe of The Poseidon Adventure. Haughty entomologist Brad Crane (Michael Caine) shows up at a secret military base full of dead soldiers, shocking the attendant General Slater (Richard Widmark). Crane announces that the soldiers are the victims of killer bees with amazingly potent venom; he's been tracking huge swarms of the things and fears they'll kill millions before they're through. Eventually, the president asks Crane to lead the battle against the killer insects and he assembles a team of crack scientists. Meanwhile, the bees overpower a family picnic in nearby Marysville; only the son, Paul (Christian Juttner), escapes with his life. Crane and military physician Helena Anderson (Katherine Ross) head to Marysville to warn the populace about the impending danger. Among the citizens in the direct path of the bees are schoolmarm Maureen Schuster (Olivia de Havilland) and her competing suitors, Felix (Ben Johnson) and Clarence (Fred MacMurray). Eventually, the bees stage a massacre in Marysville and then set their sights on Houston. Neither pesticides, firebombing, nor the heroic sacrifice of scientist Dr. Krim (Henry Fonda) seems to offer a solution for the impending disaster. Universally reviled by critics, The Swarm failed to continue Allen's winning streak at the box office. Richard Marquand directed this second-rate retread of Haunted House Horror, with The Devil added to spice up the proceedings. Katharine Ross and Sam Elliot play Margaret Walsh and Pete Danner, a couple of American architects who are inexplicably summoned to the English countryside for an architectural assignment. They meet a mysterious and reclusive millionaire, Jason Mountolive (John Standing), get one look at him, and head back to town. But when they are forced off the road by a chauffeur-driven limousine, they find themselves back at Mountolive's house of horrors. Trapped in the mansion for the weekend, they get to see Mountolive's guests dispatched in a variety of gruesome ways, before the inevitable demonic possession routine kicks in. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi
