This overlooked but entertaining direct-to-video oddity plunges into the nightmarish experiences of a portly, depressed psychic medium (Deborah Rose), whose involvement in a grisly child-murder case leads her and her detective partner (Ed Nelson) to an imposing, fortress-like mortuary. Chen (Robert Yun Ju Ahn), the owner of the funeral home and prime suspect in the case, claims the three mummified corpses in question are not children but ancient demons known as "kyoshi." It seems the little monsters have been around for centuries as a result of an age-old curse and can only be placated with offerings of human flesh -- with which the mortician has been supplying them his entire life. When Chen is jailed on murder charges, the under-fed ghouls awaken in search of dinner, trapping the staff inside the mortuary walls and munching down on them. The survivors, including Rose and Nelson, use every means at their disposal to combat the demons -- which have managed to possess the bodies of morgue attendant Mrs. Poopenplatz (Phyllis Diller) and her poodle, mutating them into hideous hell-beasts (not much of a stretch, really). Despite the presence of Diller and some rather outrageous set-pieces, director James Cummins plays the material remarkably straight. Standouts include a good performance by Rose and some truly creepy demon-attacks, marred only slightly by a clunky script and uneven pacing. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi
Shelly Long stars in this comedy as a spoiled Beverly Hills wife who decides--wanting to prove her husband's accusation of her selfishness wrong--to become the leader of her daughter's wilderness group. Though taking them on outings at the mall rather than in the woods, she later must prove her worth as a legitimate troop leader. In this droll derivation of "Arsenic and Old Lace", former 1940s film ingénues Teresa Wright and Joan Leslie are cast as the spinsterish Appletree sisters, Cabot Cove's resident eccentrics. With the annual flower show coming up, it looks as though dear old Helen and Lillian Appletree are going to win first prize with their chrysanthemums, which have bloomed beautifully and beyond all expectations. What no one else in town knows is that the ladies have come upon a wonderful new "fertiziler"--namely, the body of one Morris Penroy (Henry Jones), whom they have buried beneath their flower bed. When a second corpse pops up at the Appletree house, Cabot Cove's new sheriff Mort Metzger (Ron Masak, making his first appearance in this recurring role) cannot help but suspect that the old biddies have committed murder--but as usual, Jessica (Angela Lansbury) has concluded that someone else is responsible. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
Wildly disparate characters are not much balance for the lack of action and interaction in this film by director and co-writer Krishna Shah. A series of people go to a drive-in movie theater one night where not a lot happens until the final, inexplicable scene. These movie-goers include a local politician looking for drug dealers, a young couple harassed by bikers, two old biddies dealing in illegal substances right under the nose of the politician (not literally), and another couple in distinct disagreement about sex: what is too little for one is too much for the other. Throw in a prostitute, a dwarf, a few overeaters, a tipsy projectionist, some other characters, and a double-feature horror movie on the screen, and the 89 minutes of running time are filled, terminated by a climax that seems to come out of nowhere. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
