Julian Sands oozes maleficence as a warlock of the 1600s cast forth to 1980s Los Angeles, where he continues to work his deviltry. The story begins in 1691 Boston when a warlock is condemned to die. Calling for Satan's help, the warlock is sent forward in time to contemporary Los Angeles, where he comes crashing through the window of Kassandra (Lori Singer) and her roommate Chas (Kevin O' Brien), who think that the warlock is a LA drunk and let him stay the night to sleep it off. The next day, the warlock brutally murders Chas and then locates a spiritualist (Mary Woronov) who, possessed by the devil, tells the warlock that he must find the three parts of the Grand Grimoire, the witches' bible that contains the secret name of God. Meanwhile, Kassandra, grieving over the death of Chas, comes upon Giles Redferne (Richard E. Grant), a warlock hunter from the 16th century, sent into the future to find the warlock. While Giles is busily putting together a "witch-compass" to track the warlock, Kassandra calls the police and has him arrested. But then the warlock returns and puts a curse on Kassandra. She blacks out, only to awaken the next morning to discover that she has aged twenty years. Realizing she has put the wrong representative from the 16th century in jail, she bails out Giles and they both go in search of the warlock. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

The Day of the Locust is anything but a cheerful, light look at Hollywood in the '30s. It recreates both the town as well as the filmmaking world around which much of the town revolved with devastating accuracy. The movie tells the twin tales of talentless wannabe actress Faye Greener (Karen Black) and Homer Simpson (Donald Sutherland), a lovelorn accountant who couldn't care less about movies. Around this framework, a huge and intricate social network is tellingly revealed, until the film's gruesome and tragic ending. Not for those who prefer to hang onto their illusions about the glory days of Hollywood, The Day of the Locust, based on the novel by Nathanael West, is a must-see for serious film buffs. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Three young female entertainers on their way to a gig in Las Vegas are stranded in the desert when their car breaks down. A stranger named Andre (Andrew Prine) discovers them on the side of the road and offers assistance, which the girls accept, blinded by his good looks and stylish sheepskin jacket. Unfortunately, they soon learn that Andre is a maniac who keeps a menagerie of half-mad, malnourished women chained in his barn and they are to be the newest additions to his horrible collection. Not only that, but the farm sits in an area that once was used for hydrogen bomb testing, and Andre's father has mutated into a deformed, bloodthirsty monster that must be kept locked in a shed. Coincidentally, one of the girls (Manuella Thiess) bears a striking resemblance to Andre's long-lost mother, and when his twisted mind decides they are one and the same, the girl plays along, hoping to buy time. Meanwhile, an agent (Chuck Niles) who represents the missing entertainers has been hounding the Nevada police to find them. They finally track the girls to the correct location, but Andre's father has gotten loose and the grotesque creature is preparing to wreck bloody havoc upon the helpless chained women. ~ Fred Beldin, All Movie Guide
