In this TV sitcom, veteran L.A. local-news anchor Brian Benben (portrayed by Brian Benben) and his co-anchor are replaced by chart-topping Ken-and-Barbie news "personalities" -- Tabitha Berkeley (Lisa Thornhill) and former VH1 veejay Chad Rockwell (Charles Esten). TV reporter Freddy Fontaine (Steven Gilborn) was killed while doing a story about the zoo's ape exhibit, so Brian now has to deal with his new assignment as a human-interest reporter, beginning with a feature on some eccentric older ladies. Artist Jill Clayburgh is divorced by her doctor husband James Farentino. Despite the obvious fact that Farentino is a louse, the loyalties of the couple's friends are divided. Left with precious little money, Clayburgh tries to make a go of it as a single mother, but finds that many of her so-called "close friends" don't want to have much to do with her anymore. Despite its melancholy tone and moments of dead seriousness, the made-for-TV Who Gets the Friends is a comedy, and at times a very funny one. In the first episode of a two-part story, Dan (John Larroquette) insists upon disobeying his doctor's orders by returning to work immediately after minor ulcer surgery. Predictably ending up back in the hospital, Dan is still determined to prove that he's far from incapacitated, this time by making whoopee with sexy Sheila (Leslie Bevis) in his hospital bed. This, coupled with some angry words from Harry (Harry Anderson) , causes Dan to lapse into a coma--and to very nearly become a candidate for the morgue! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
