In this superficial interpretation of an intended suspense story and comedy, Robert Hays plays a TV anchor man on a flight to London who is duped by his attractive co-passenger (Pamela Stephenson) into thinking he is onto secret spying activities. After the plane lands, the newsman is unexpectedly accused of murdering his own wife. By the time Inspector Anthony Crisp (Jim Dale) gets into the picture, events have traveled a little farther into the bizarre (John Gielgud in black leather), too far to be saved by the good acting of the leads. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

One-dimensional characters tend to fall flat, and that seems to be the case in this low-budget parody of a James Bond spy-thriller that has stretched the bravado of the spy genre beyond its elastic limits. The story involves a British agent, Charles Bind (Gareth Hunt) sent on a mission to find Lord Dangerfield (Noel Johnson) and along the way eliminate the evil Lucifer Orchid (Gary Hope). Lucifer is using plastic surgery to create doubles of the U.S. vice-president, agent Bind, and others in order to install the doubles in power and take over the world. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

For Your Eyes Only eschews the gimmickry and campiness of earlier James Bond films, concentrating instead on telling the story and maintaining suspense. Roger Moore is back as Secret Agent 007, this time on the trail of Soviet spies while he romances the beautiful Melina, played by Carole Bouquet. Richard Maibaum's screenplay has very little to do with the collection of short stories that made up Ian Fleming's For Your Eyes Only, save for the plotline involving Melina's seeking vengeance for the death of her father. Frank Sinatra stars in this espionage thriller filmed at the height of the Cold War. Sam Laker (Sinatra) is an American industrial designer working in London. When Laker travels to East Germany on business, he brings along his ten-year-old son, and he ends up running into Martin Slattery (Peter Vaughn), an old Army buddy now working with British intelligence. Slattery tries to persuade Laker to put his wartime skills as a sniper to good use against a rogue agent now working with the communists. Laker refuses, but he reluctantly agrees to deliver a message to Karen Gisevius (Nadia Gray), who worked with the anti-Nazi resistance during the war. Laker returns from his errand to discover that his son has been kidnapped; Col. Hartmann (Derren Nesbitt), a communist operative, informs Laker that his boy will be held until he is willing to perform an assassination on their behalf. The Naked Runner was produced by Brad Dexter; Frank Sinatra, a man of fierce loyalties, often worked with Dexter after the producer saved Sinatra's life in a drowning incident. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
