After incorporating elements of comic book style and design into many of his films, director Sam Raimi helms this straight-ahead, big-budget comic book adaptation, which also marks acclaimed young actor Tobey Maguire's first dip into live-action blockbuster filmmaking. Spider-Man follows the template of the original Stan Lee/Steve Ditko source material, with hero Peter Parker an orphaned, intellectual teen loner living in Queens with his aunt (Rosemary Harris) and uncle (Cliff Robertson), and dreaming of the girl next door, Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst). On a field trip to a Columbia University lab, Peter is bitten by a genetically altered spider and overnight he gains superhuman strength, agility, and perception. At first, Peter uses his powers for material gain, winning a wrestling match with a purportedly lucrative prize. But when Peter apathetically fails to stop a burglar from robbing the wrestling arena, a tragedy follows that compels him to devote his powers to fighting crime -- as the superhero Spider-Man. When he's not busy fighting crime in a spider suit, Peter moves into an apartment with his best friend, Harry (James Franco), and begins work as a photographer at the Daily Bugle. Meanwhile, his do-gooder alter ego finds a nemesis in the form of the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), a super-powered, megalomaniacal villain who happens to be the alter ego of Harry's father, weapons-manufacturing mogul Norman Osborn. Tom Welles (Nicolas Cage) is a surveillance expert on the rise. He's living the American dream with a wife, Amy (Catherine Keener), infant daughter, and a house in the suburbs of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. After the completion of an assignment for a U.S. Senator, Welles is summoned to the house of a recently deceased captain of industry. His widow, in settling his estate, has discovered an 8MM film in her late husband's private safe. The silent short depicts the apparent murder of a young woman by a large, masked figure, what is known as a "snuff" film. Greatly disturbed by the film's contents, the widow hires Welles to find the identity of the woman and determine if she is still alive. Welles finds the girl's identity and follows her trail from the time she ran away from home to Hollywood. Once there, Welles meets adult bookstore clerk Max California (Joaquin Phoenix) to act as Virgil to Welles' Dante. As the two begin their descent into the world of underground pornography, the detective grows more and more distant from his family, as if he cannot shake the taint of the world in which he now walks. Tom and Max eventually meet pornographers Dino Velvet (Peter Stormare) and Eddie Poole (James Gandolfini). A modern, light-hearted version of William Shakespeare's Macbeth (superstitiously known to theater types as "the Scottish play"), this romantic comedy was adapted, produced, and directed by Mackinlay Polhemus, who cast several family members in key roles. Josiah Polhemus plays Mack, a poet who returns to his hometown of Inverness, Scotland, where he encounters his three eccentric maiden aunts, who inform him presciently that he will marry Beth (played by the film's producer, Ann Boehlke). Mack's been secretly in love with Beth for many years, but she is engaged to marry his brother in one week. Mack knows that his brother is only marrying Beth in order to worm his way into the good graces of her wealthy father, a lawyer with a thriving firm. Unable to break up the relationship without destroying his family, Mack returns to his current residence in Inverness, California, resigned to the inevitable confrontation and confession. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

In honor of KACL's anniversary, Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) puts together his version of a "classic" radio drama. Unfortunately, Frasier insists upon directing the show as well, assuming this responsibility in the manner that makes your average banana-republic dictator look like Santa Claus; not surprisingly, his fellow actors are soon teetering on the verge of mutiny. Perhaps as a result, our hero's drama comes off like a comedy -- with everyone having a good, long laugh except for poor Frasier. ~ Rovi

It's just not William Foster's (Michael Douglas) day. Laid off from his defense job, Foster gets stuck in the middle of the mother of all traffic jams. Desirous of attending his daughter's birthday party at the home of his ex-wife (Barbara Hershey), Foster abandons his car and begins walking, encountering one urban humiliation after another (the Korean shopkeeper who obstinately refuses to give change is the worst of the batch). He also slowly unravels mentally, finally snapping at a fast-food restaurant that refuses to serve him breakfast because it's "too late." Running amok with an arsenal of weapons at the ready, Foster -- also known as "D-FENS" because of his vanity license plate -- rapidly becomes a source of terror to some, a folk hero to others. Developed by Tina Sinatra and approved by Frank himself, Sinatra is a made-for-television mini-series following the life and times of Frank Sinatra, one of the most popular and acclaimed singers of the 20th century. Opening with his childhood in Hoboken, New Jersey, the film follows Sinatra's (Philip Casnoff) rise to the top in the '40s, through the dark days of the early '50s and his triumphant re-emergence in the mid-'50s, to his status as pop culture icon in the '60s, '70s and '80s. In between, the film hits all of the main events, including his three marriages, his connections with the Mafia and his notorious friendship with the Rat Pack. Even with the presence of Tina Sinatra as executive producer, Sinatra doesn't gloss over the more unsavory portions of Frank's life, which makes it all the more impressive. Kojak moved from its familiar Sunday-night stamping grounds to a Tuesday slot with this episode, in which a young Dorian Harewood) is cast as Jake Riley, a prizefighter falsely accused of his wife's murder. Escaping custody, Riley takes several hostages in a local church and demands that the authorities provide him with $200,000 in ransom money and an escape route. Racing against time, Kojak (Telly Savalas must simultaneously talk sense to the desperate fugitive and locate the actual murderer. Burt Reynolds is cast as psychotic criminal Mike Murtaugh, who with his partner Frankie Metro (James Farentino) hijacks a USMC weapons truck, killing a marine in the process. The FBI launches a nationwide search in hopes of stopping Murtaugh before he can either utilize the stolen weapons or sell them to an enemy power. A bulldozer is brought into play in the action-filled climax of this episode, in which Inspector Erskine (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.) seriously considers resigning from the FBI in favor of a more lucrative civilian job. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Eleven of the twelve jurors in the murder trial of Jamie Wrenn (Jack Betts) have voted for a guilty verdict. The sole holdout is Hoss Cartwright, who harbors the old familiar "reasonable doubts." When it appears as though Hoss has received a bribe, his brother Adam takes a hand in the matter. Paint manufactuer Amory Fallon (played by Wesley Lau, who later joined the Perry Mason cast as Lt. Anderson) suspects his partner Ned Thompson of embezzling funds, setting the fire which wrecked their plant, and worst of all, cheating with Fallon's wife Vivian (Leslie Parrish). Intending to confront Thompson in the man's apartment, Fallon not only brings along a threatening letter, but also gets good and drunk to bolster his courage. Passing out before Thompson returns, Fallon wakes up to find his partner's dead body on the floor beside him.
