In this live-action version of the classic fairy tale, Hansel (Hugh Pollard) and Gretel (Nicola Stapelton) are the offspring of an impoverished woodcutter (David Warner) and his wife (Emily Richard) who wander into the woods in this Grimm Brother's fairy tale. Based on J.G. Ballard's autobiographical novel, Empire of the Sun stars Christian Bale as a spoiled young British boy, living with his wealthy family in pre-World War II Shanghai. During the Japanese invasion, Bale is separated from his parents. With the help of soldier-of-fortune John Malkovich, Bale learns to survive without a retinue of servants at his beck and call. By the time Malkovich and Bale are tossed into a Japanese prison camp, the boy has picked up enough street-smarts and developed enough intestinal fortitude to regard his imprisonment as an exciting adventure. Michael Gambon stars as playwright/raconteur Oscar Wilde in this British TV film. As in earlier Wilde biopics, this version preoccupies itself with the homosexuality scandal involving Lord Alfred Douglas (Robin Lermitte) and his lordship's political powerful father, the Marquis of Queensbury (Norman Rodway). Arrested for corrupting Lord Douglas' morals, Wilde spends a debilitating 5 years in Reading Gaol, emerging a shattered shell of his former self. Not unexpectedly, the film is at its liveliest when depicting the flamboyant pre-prison Wilde, played with elan by Shakespearean actor Gambon. The knowledgeable teleplay for Forbidden Passion: Oscar Wilde the Movie was written by John Hawresworth; the musical score was by Carl Davis, best known for his orchestrations on behalf of film historian Kevin Brownlow's silent-movie restorations. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Filmed in 1982, this Tony award winning production of Charles Dickens classic Nicholas Nickleby clocks in with an intimidating running time of nine hours, though it is considered to be one of the best adaptations of the original novel. Roger Rees plays the young Nicholas, who, along with his mother (Jane Downs), and sister (Emily Richard), are forced to seek financial assistance from Nicholas's smarmy uncle (John Woodvine). Ralph does provide Nicholas with a job, but it may have been kinder to leave him on the street--the school he has been sent to work for is run by a sadistic schoolmaster who delights in savagely beating his students. Nicholas leaves the school alongside Smike (David Threlfall), a limping, crooked-backed little boy who had been victim to much of the school's abusive policies. Once unemployed, Nicholas must find a way to to protect his family and come to terms with his own complicated emotions. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide
