The Anglo-American Behind the Headlines is not a remake of the 1937 RKO "B" of the same name, though both share a newspaper setting. Reporter Paul Carpenter heads the investigation of a murder case. The victim was black-mailing showgirl Hazel Court, and as usual there's a plenitude of suspects. Also as usual, the journalists prove to be quicker on the uptake than the cops on the case. Behind the Headlines was based on a novel by Robert Chapman. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Dangerous Cargo is yet another hour-long British crime potboiler. Jack Watling stars as a security guard who is strongarmed into assisting a robbery gang. The highlight of the film is an intricate gold heist, making one wish that someone more inspired than John Harlow had directed this sequence. Susan Stephen is the disposable heroine, while Karel Stepanek wins the film's acting honors as the criminal mastermind. Dangerous Cargo enjoyed a robust second life on American TV in the early 1960s. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

When Prisoner of Corbal was released in the US in 1939, reviewers were confused as to its country of origin. A bit of extra research would have revealed that the film was lensed in England under the title The Marriage of Corbal, and that it was based on The Nuptuals of Corbal, a swashbuckling novel by Rafael Sabatini. Hazel Terry plays Cleonie, the romantic bone of contention between the French aristocrat Marquis de Corbal (Hugh Sinclair) and insurrectionist Varennes (Nils Asther). To save Cleonie from the guillotine during the Revolution, Varennes disguises her as his nephew (!) and smuggles her out of the country. Unexpectedly, it is the Marquis who proves the hero of the peace, while Varennes willingly becomes a martyr to his own cause. Noah Beery overracts as usual in the role of a rogueish Sergeant. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
