The inhabitants of a small, remote island have been practicing voodoo rites and worshipping an evil priest named Damballah for years, but the local law officials generally turn a blind eye to this death cult's bizarre activities. Captain Labesch (Rafael Bertrand) arrives from the mainland, determined to crack down on the island's lawlessness and clean up the ineffectual, hard-drinking police force. He appeals for assistance from wealthy plantation tycoon Carl Van Molder (Boris Karloff), who owns nearly half of the island and wields a great deal of influence over the population. Van Molder has made the study of parapsychology his life's work and believes in the secret powers of the mind. He warns Labesch not to interfere with this forgotten island's ancient ways. Also visiting is Van Molder's niece, Annabella (Julissa), a temperance crusader who wants her uncle to help fund the International Anti-Saloon League. She falls in love with handsome police lieutenant Andrew Wilhelm (Carlos East), despite his fondness for rum. Meanwhile, beautiful native girls are being transformed into zombies, and a sinister snake dancer named Kalea (Tongolele) leads them to attack and devour any meddling policemen who get too close to their unholy rituals. When Annabella is kidnapped and prepared to be the cult's latest human sacrifice, Labesch and Wilhelm have to infiltrate their ranks to save her, and they finally learn the secret identity of the all-powerful Damballah. ~ Fred Beldin, Rovi

This grisly Mexican horror film details the attempts of the chief doctor at a sanitarium to contact the spirit of his former partner -- a man executed for a murder he didn't commit -- through a psychic medium. The doc soon regrets his decision when the deceased doctor's soul imposes itself on the land of the living, re-animating the horribly-mutilated corpse of his former assistant, who was burned to death by acid. The ghoulish, violin-playing attendant challenges the doctor for the attention of the new nurse, who had recently come to the hospital to collect an inheritance and wound up staying aboard. Sadly for her, the zombie's method of expressing his affection involves making her look as gruesome as he does. As with most of the horror films of director Fernando Mendez, this is stylishly shot but practically impossible to follow. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

One of the better crime dramas to come out of Mexico at this time, El Hombre de la Ametralladora features David Silva and Rafael Bertrand as a murderous villain and his evil sidekick. The two carry out a kidnapping, turning a woman (Silvia Fournier) and two children (Rocio Rosales and Lucero Taboada) into hostages. There is no doubt that the hostages' lives are at stake if ransom demands are not met. A tough, wily policeman (Fernando Casanova) starts to track down the kidnappers with every intent of foiling their plot. But as he gets closer and is most in need of back-up, it looks like any rescue is going to lie solely in his hands. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
