In this average, made for pay-TV adventure yarn loosely based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Challenger's Gold, the archaeologist Dr. Christopher Falcon (John Marley) is called away from a dig in an Arab country to assess a startling find in Mexico, with the usual dangerous results. When he arrives, he immediately sees that among the uncovered items is a fertility goddess that was once part of a group of precious objects missing since a devastating, 17th-century earthquake. Determined to find the rest of the treasure -- also vaunted as having supernatural powers -- he sets out on an expedition funded by Murdoch (George Touliatos) a suspicious-looking, but super-rich business tycoon. Along for the ride are Falcon's daughter Tracey (Louise Vallance), a spirited British journalist (Simon MacCorkindale), and their guide, the attractive B.G. Alvarez (Blanca Guerra). In a bloody version of Wyatt Earp's shootout at the OK Corral, escalated several times over, this story substitutes a motorcycle gang for the outlaws, and the "Law" is represented not by a U.S. Marshal, but by two antagonistic men. Sheriff Ventura (Mario Almada) counsels his deputy Yunke (Javier Garcia) to ignore the motorcycle gang that just roared into town, because they are only going to shortly roar out of town on their own. Yunke ignores this advice, kills a gang member, and then frames a local citizen for the crime. This sets off a minor war, as the motorcyclists capture a school and a poolhall, and to make matters worse, they kill the young son of one of the town's policemen when the boy tries to escape from the school. What follows is a final and bloody showdown in which Sheriff Ventura and the gang's leader Vikingo (Jorge Reynoso) duel it out to the death.

While Salvador wasn't Oliver Stone's first film (a pair of offbeat horror stories preceded it), it defined his style of fiercely dramatic, politically oriented filmmaking, staked out his territory as one of the major directors of the 1980s and 1990s, and remains one of his strongest works to date. Veteran photojournalist Richard Boyle (James Woods) has been taking his camera to the world's trouble spots for over 20 years; while he does good work, Boyle's fondness for booze and drugs, and his colossal arrogance, have given him a reputation that's left him practically unemployable. Broke and with no immediate prospects, Boyle and his buddy Doctor Rock (Jim Belushi), an out-of-work disc jockey, head to El Salvador, where Boyle is convinced that he can scare up some lucrative freelance work amidst the nation's political turmoil. However, when Boyle and Rock witness the execution of a student by government troops just as they enter the country, it becomes clear that this war is more serious than they were expecting. Increasingly convinced that El Salvador is a disaster starting to happen, Boyle eventually decides that it's time to get out; but he has fallen in love with a woman named Maria (Elpidia Carrillo), and he doesn't want to leave her behind. James Woods gives one of his best performances as Boyle; and the passion of Stone's message, aided by the power of its truth (the film is based on actual events), propels the film forward. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Steve Railsback, the star of the cult favorite The Stunt Man, carries the ball in Assassin. Railsback plays a CIA agent, assigned to protect a senator. When the politician is killed, the principal suspect is Our Hero. Left to his own devices, Railsback unearths one of those government conspiracies so beloved of quickie filmmakers. The action-packed Spanish-language crime drama Bulldog concerns itself with Officer Bulldog, a onetime cop sentenced to prison but paroled on the grounds that he unearth a menacing serial killer. He consents, but an affair with an exotic dancer - and his determination to keep his daughter off the streets - make his mission a sticky and difficult one. Directed by Christian Gonzalez, Bulldog stars Jorge Reynoso in the title role, alongside Hugo Stiglitz, Guillermo Quintanilla and Luis Reynoso. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Per its title, the Spanish-language docudrama Tragedia en Waco Texas recounts the grisly end of the Branch Davidian compound in April, 1993, in Waco, Texas. This gripping and disturbing reenactment, helmed by Mexican director Fernando Durán, dramatizes the events preceding, during, and following the Janet Reno-ordered FBI siege on the 'Mt. Carmel Center' headquarters of the religious cult masterminded by the ill-fated David Koresh - during which a fire reduced the entire operation to a pile of ash.
