Per its title, the Spanish-language docudrama Tragedia en Waco Texas recounts the grisly end of the Branch Davidian compound in April, 1993, in Waco, Texas. This gripping and disturbing reenactment, helmed by Mexican director Fernando Durán, dramatizes the events preceding, during, and following the Janet Reno-ordered FBI siege on the 'Mt. Carmel Center' headquarters of the religious cult masterminded by the ill-fated David Koresh - during which a fire reduced the entire operation to a pile of ash. The film stars Jorge Reynoso, Jorge Ortín , Ana Luisa Peluffo and Polo Ortín. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Luis is the only survivor of an attack by bandits on his boarding school. Chaos rocks the Mexican countryside during the 1910 revolution, and the boy is happy to have survived. Before he can get away and head towards home, he encounters another group of bandits. These are pre-teens who scavenge places looted by adult bandits. Thinking that by joining them his chances of returning home will be better, Luis' arrival makes the group a quartet. They soon become fast friends, bound together by their many adventures and their need to fend off the lethal bullying of the adult bandits, in particular the gang led by the sadistic Cacho. Before long, the kid bandits are wreaking havoc in the countryside all on their own. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this story, a group of citizens of the town of Culiacan have proposed their local hero, Jesus Malverde, for sainthood. Of course, to qualify, they have to prove that he existed, and that the stories which depict him as a kind of Robin Hood figure in 19th century Mexico are true. A series of flashbacks takes us into the 19th century, and the hero's shenanigans on behalf of the poor and the oppressed. In one episode, the whole population of the town get together to keep him from being captured by the corrupt, cruel governor of the state of Sinaloa. Many of the tales told about Malverde contradict themselves, and while his historical reality becomes less and less credible, his importance as a symbol of just rebellion against oppression grows more and more apparent. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Based on the song Mack the Knife, the very popular Rubén Blades song Pedro Navajas was the inspiration for a very popular Mexican movie taking the song name as its title, about a pimp and prostitute whose love/hate relationship resulted in their mutual destruction. In this sequel, their son develops into a defender of women. Raised in the U.S., the lad comes to Mexico when he hears his mother has died and attempts to look for his father. He is shocked to discover that he, too, has died. He is motivated to learn how to use a switchblade with uncanny skill, and earns for himself the sobriquet "Navajas," or "Blades." ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This light entertainment from Mexico is a quasi-biographical account of the (current) life of the very popular and handsome blond singer Oscar Athie, who plays himself. In the story, he begins his career in low-life nightspots and eventually becomes a big national star. At the same time, the career of the love of his life (and singing partner) Laura Flores also flourishes. The two lovebirds croon to one another adoringly through much of the movie while the rest of the world cheers their beauty, love and success. Only a former love of the singer is unhappy at all this, and she has the good grace to go completely insane. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Now he has decided to find a more acceptable outlet for his urge to clean up society by using the most violent possible techniques: he has joined the police. In this extremely graphic and gory sequel, he is teamed up with Roberto Rojas (Sergio Goyri) and together, they break up a brutal narcotics ring in the most violent manner. aka: It's my Life -- El Noa Noa 2 This shallow sequel to the 1979 film on the early stages of Alberto Aguilera's musical career continues the story of the singer's mistaken incarceration and glimpses of where his career would go after he is released from jail. As this biographical drama opens, Aguilera (known by his stage name of Juan Gabriel) is framed for a robbery he never committed and is sent to prison. While in prison he entertains the inmates with his music and songs, and the "dreams" he has of his future take up the rest of the time. These sequences introduce excerpts from his successful future and alleviate the time he has to spend in jail. Letters home to mom lie about where he is, since his adoration of his mother would not allow him to tell her the truth about his arrest and conviction, no matter how undeserved. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This melodramatic, three-handkerchief tortilla Western features good acting by Pedro Infante, Jr. as Reynaldo and Arturo Martinez, Jr. as Lauro. Both men are romancing Marsela (Monica Prado), whose main interest lies in the number of pesos she can put in the bank and how to ascend the social ladder. Marsela refuses to marry her beloved Lauro because he cannot afford to tie the knot in the splendid Basilica of Guadalupe. As a gang of bandidos wreaks havoc in the community, wedding plans continue for Marsela's marriage to Lauro's best friend, Reynaldo. But considering the number of bodies piling up in the war of the bandits, it looks like the bride may have to wear black. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The action-adventure scenes of unconvincing sword fights, passable martial arts, and other macho displays alternate with the feminine displays of twins Mira and Mara (Leigh Harris and Lynette Harris) in this prehistoric fantasy. Mira and Mara were raised as boys -- for awhile, anyway -- to protect them from their villainous father Traigon (Robert Ballesteros) who needs to sacrifice his first-born to the gods in order to become even more powerful in the arts of magic. The twins are aided in their struggle against their father by two warriors, Erlik (Bob Nelson), dubbed with a Southern accent that gives away the tongue-in-cheek subtext of the plot, and Baldar (Bruno Rey). Subsidiary battles with sex-starved zombies who have been put away too long, and the monkey men who suffer from the same problem, imply that sexual deprivation can lead to some nasty-tempered machos, even if they are zombies. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In this French-Mexican-Spanish film that hops back and forth between the narration's present and its past, viewers watch Antonieta (Isabelle Adjani) as she is involved in the turbulent Mexican political scene in the first decades of the 20th century -- as she goes to Paris and commits suicide in the Notre Dame cathedral of that city, and then, in a confusing segment of the film, as she is seen with the present-day Parisian author (Hanna Schygulla) who is researching the story of Antonieta's death and who is a witness to her suicide. The film does not follow that chronology exactly, rather introducing the Parisian author first, and taking the author to Mexico for her research where she sees film clips from the political turmoil of the 1910s-1920s and gradually gets to "know" Antonieta -- though in the end, it could be said that no one seems to know Antonieta really well, or why she would want to kill herself. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
