Bert Remsen Movies
Though he made his first film appearance in 1959's Pork Chop Hill, American character actor Bert Remsen did not achieve prominence until the 1980s. On TV, Remsen was seen as Mario the Chef in It's a Living (1980-81) and as wildcat oil man Harrison "Dandy" Dandridge during the 1987-88 season of Dallas. In films, he was featured in several Robert Altman productions, and also essayed the title character in Daddy's Dyin'...Who's Got the Will? (1990). In addition, he occasionally worked as a Hollywood casting director. Bert Remsen's most recent credit (as of 1996) was as one of the "expert witnesses" during the Bruno Richard Hauptmann trial in the made-for-cable Crime of the Century. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide- 1999
A man thinks he may have found the woman of his dreams thanks to his new job, though neither of them have an easy time believing it in this offbeat romantic comedy. After Mickey Schwinn (Alan Berger) manages to put a stake through the heart of each of his two careers (he was a commodities broker by day and a comedian in his spare time), he discovers he's broke and needs to find work right away. One of Mickey's friends (Rachel Hunter) is able to arrange some work for him, but it's hardly the career he was dreaming of; his pal's sister Sally (Ericka Klein) is a gifted physicist who is also handicapped and must use a wheelchair. Sally has just published a book and needs a chauffeur to dive her from city to city for a promotional tour to pitch the book, and Mickey lands the job. Sally has a sharp tongue and doesn't suffer fools gladly, but she also has a quick, dry wit and a fascinating turn of mind, and Mickey finds himself increasingly intrigued by her. The search is on for a Cardassian collaborator who was responsible for the slaughter of 43 Bajorans. In the course of the investigation, Kira must face the possibility that the guilty party may be Vedek Bareil (Philip Anglim), the man she loves. Real-life father and son Lloyd and Beau Bridges star in the tense modern melodrama Secret Sins of the Father. Nebraska farmer Louis Thielman (Lloyd) is charged with murder of his wife. Making the charge is Louis's son Tom (Beau), the town sheriff. Though the evidence points to Louis, there are those who believe that Tom is pursuing a vendetta rather than justice. For starters, Louis has been carrying on an affair with Lisa Carson, Tom's ex-lover. Despite the film's docudrama approach, this one isn't based on a true story. Nell Carter stars a a popular singer and Dinah Manoff costars as her maid du jour in the made-for-TV Maid For Each Other. As for Nell, she doesn't suffers fools very easily. This situation is fitfully amusing in itself, but the fun really begins when Nell and Dinah uncover an insidious plot involving corporate espionage and murder. The hokey TerrorVision is more an unintentional model of how horror films were made in the early '50s than a trend-setting story about the TV monster who ate them all. When Stanley (Gerrit Graham) goes outside to adjust his family's satellite dish, a living, organic alien monster-cum-garbage-disposal is zapped into the TV sets in Stanley's household. The monster pops out of the sets once in awhile to grab a quick snack of anyone within reach. Who Is Julia? was based on author Barbara H. Harris' "speculative fiction" page-turner. Mary Frances (Mare Winningham) is a dull, drab housewife suffering from brain disease. Julia (Judy Ledford) is a drop-dead-gorgeous model who is killed in a car accident. Out of desperation, the surgeons decide to transplant Julia's brain into Mary Beth's body. The balance of the film involves Julia's distressed reaction to being trapped with the plain features and blue-collar lifestyle of Mary Beth. Sidelines sufferers include Jameson Parker as Julia's husband and Jonathan Banks as Mary Frances' spouse. Richard Beymer plays an inventor who has created high-tech prosthetic devices in order to help his younger brother Drake Hogestyn. Once a star athlete in the brutal (and sometimes fatal) game of combat hockey, Hogestyn wants to maintain his status as a public hero, and to that end has no qualms about turning bionic. On a less fantastic note, the boys' social activist sister Cristina Raines rejects the reconciliation efforts extended by her macho-man father Bert Remsen. This third film version of Harold Brighthouse's play Hobson's Choice moves the locale from turn-of-century London to 1914 New Orleans. Horatio Hobson (Jack Warden) is the boozy, tyrannical owner of a shoe store. Hobson's daughter Maggie (Sharon Gless) falls in love with humble shoe clerk Will Mossup (Richard Thomas). When Hobson refuses to give the relationship his blessing, Maggie huffily takes her new boy friend out of the store to set up her own shop--which soon threatens to put Hobson out of business. In her last TV appearance, Lillian Gish plays the elderly benefactor who enables Will and Maggie to declare their independence. Hobson's Choice first aired on December 21, 1983. In 1967, Joni Eareckson Tada broke her spinal cord in a diving accident, and at the tender age of 17 she was consigned to a wheelchair for life. This biographical drama (based on her book) is about her courage in adjusting to the results of the accident. At first, Tada suffered through several operations and long rehabilitation sessions, but nothing was able to bring back the use of her arms and legs. After she goes home to her family in Maryland, she starts to draw and paint by holding the brush in her mouth.
