Nate Berkus was born in California and grew up in Minneapolis. His career as a decorator took on a steady climb from the time he graduated from Lake Forest College in 1994, but he experienced a life-changing event ten years later, when, while vacationing in Sri Lanka with photographer Fernando Bengoechea, their resort was hit by the catastrophic 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Berkus survived the event, but Bengoechea came up missing and was later presumed dead.
Berkus appeared on
The Oprah Winfrey Show the next year to discuss his experience, and the relationship he formed with
Winfrey lead to an opportunity in 2007 to host the reality series
