"I'll never love you . . . ever!" the sexy and attractive Marina (Victoria Abril) states emphatically to the love-struck Ricky (Antonio Banderas). You know she means what she says because when she makes this statement she is handcuffed and lashed to a bed, not exactly the proper way to warm anyone up for romance. Yet in Pedro Almodovar's Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! the way to a woman's heart is depicted as being held in captivity until the Stockholm Syndrome kicks in. The film concerns the plight of Marina, a "B"-movie diva trying to adjust to her recent success after years of porno films and drug addiction. But then into her life comes Ricky, a part-time handyman and full-time mental patient, who, during one of his past escapes from the mental ward, had spent the night with Marina -- who gave in to him during one of her less-discerning moments. Since then, Ricky has been thinking of her constantly. Determined to win her affections, he kidnaps Marina, holding her captive in her own apartment and trying everything to convince her to love him -- then they could marry and have a big family. All Ricky's attempts to woo Marina fail. Finally, after taking a severe beating from some street thugs, he strikes a chord in Marina's nurturing heart so that when her sister Lola (Loles Leon) finally discovers her plight, Marina no longer wants to be rescued. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

In this softcore sexploitation film by Paco Lara, Christina (Jewel Shepard) is the wealthy heiress to a publishing fortune, kidnapped by a variety of evil men or women who sexually use her as they wish and then pass her on to the next group, willingly or not. In-between the sex are some obviously fake martial arts battles between women, and a non-existent storyline which has Christina falling asleep at odd moments so dream sequences can be added to the pastiche. Parental guidance is in order. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This standard softcore film actually has a plot of sorts that is adapted from a story by Honoré de Balzac, about a young model/prostitute named Venus (Josephine Jacqueline Jones) who comes to Paris from Martinique in the 19th century and encounters a series of lovers, male and/or female. Venus first captures the heart and the eye of young sculptor Armand (José Antonio Ceinos), who makes a statue of her called the "Black Venus." Venus's amorous attentions are next focused on the wealthy bisexual Madame Marie (Karin Schubert), causing Armand to downslide into depression -- partly because Venus is making money to support them through this prostitution. Later on, Venus falls for innocent teenager Louise (Florence Guerin) in Paris, and the two of them eventually move into the Spanish mansion of an art collector. The art collector, however, has more than a passing interest in the Black Venus statue -- and his greed bodes ill for everyone. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The title of this movie raises an issue that is never really met head-on in the story, instead, the focus seems to be on a meandering sub-plot. The Pope (Terence Stamp) was once Father Andreani, a teacher of Father Bruno Martello (Fabrizio Bentivoglio) when Father Bruno was studying at the Catholic University. As Father Andreani rises up the hierarchy until the cardinals choose him from among their ranks to be the Supreme Pontiff, Father Bruno errs by breaking his celibacy vows with a gorgeous terrorist and heads in the opposite direction -- actually, to India where he is given a magical mixture that induces a transcendental state, and apparently changes his politics as well. Once back in Italy, he is convinced by opposition bishops to murder the Pope -- but the ex-Father Bruno has his own devious plot in mind. Little does the Pope know what is in store for him, as the altered-consciousness of his old student fixates on a little bit of the mind-bending mixture that he has reserved for very special occasions. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In this 3-D adventure, a knock-off of Raiders of the Lost Ark, a mercenary history professor and his crack team of commandos head out to retrieve four stolen crowns said to possess the power of good and evil. It will not be an easy task as the crowns are being held by a mad cultist. The second three dimensional collaboration between Tony Anthony, Gene Quintano, and director Ferdinando Baldi, this follow-up to Comin' at Ya! was not nearly as successful as their first outing. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

The story of Sister Patrocinio, the "Nun of the Wounds" is told in a series of flashbacks to life in Madrid in the 1830s, when she lived. The government had just changed over into the more liberal hands of Mendizabal, and Sister Patrocinio was so worried about the broad-minded attitudes of the times that she surrepticiously inflicted wounds on herself like those Christ had suffered, implying there was some sort of miracle at work to get the people believing as they should once again. The deceptive Sister is played by a former Miss Spain, Amparo Munoz, who it is assumed, would be worth looking at wounded or not. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Juan Piquer Simon, best known for such horror films as Pieces and Slugs, tackled the Jules Verne story with poor results. Kenneth More leads the expedition to the earth's core, where he and his party are menaced by gorillas, dinosaurs, and other assorted creatures. The special-effects are less than inspired, although More does his best in the lead and Spanish-horror fans will enjoy seeing veterans Jack Taylor and Frank Brana among the cast. Simon would return to Verne for inspiration with his 1981 film Monster Island. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

Filmed in 1971 under the title The Widower, Love and Pain and the Whole Damn Thing finally reached the screen in 1973. Set in Spain, the film stars Timothy Bottoms as the aimless son of doctor Charles Baxter. While bicycling through the Spanish countryside, Charles makes the acquaintance of much-older Lila (Maggie Smith.) He falls in love with her, but she is resistant. Eventually touched by Charles' clumsy sincerity, Lila invites him to bed. The film then wanders into Love Story territory when Lila is afflicted by a terminal illness. Director Alan J. Pakula completed Love and Pain and the Whole Damn Thing during the "cooling off" period between his more famous Klute (1971) and The Parallax View (1974). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This strange Spanish film takes the director's obsession with death about as far as it can go. The movie intersperses graphic photography of a complete real autopsy with interviews, conducted in Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris, on people's attitudes towards their own deaths. The narrator/hero/interviewer muses on the subject of death and quotes extensively from great poets and playwrights such as Calderon de Barca, and Goethe. Though this movie has documentary aspects, it also has a storyline, and is intended as an entertainment feature. Hence, it falls into the "mondo cinema" genre which celebrates the gruesome and bizarre. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This Spanish-language melodrama is the first filmmaking effort by director Ramon Barco. The story concerns the progressive mental deterioration of a film actress who retreats to her memento-cluttered hotel room whenever she gets overstressed, which is often. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
