Jennifer Lawrence Movies

Kentucky-born actress Jennifer Lawrence began her career as a teenager, appearing on shows like Monk and The Bill Engvall Show from 2006 through 2009. In 2008, she appeared alongside Charlize Theron in the critically acclaimed film The Burning Plain, for which she won the Marcello Mastroianni Award for the best young emerging actor/actress. She next made waves starring as the daughter of a troubled mother in 2010's Winter's Bone, which garnered her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. In 2011 she appeared in the well-reviewed romantic drama Like Crazy, and she won the coveted lead role in the highly anticipated adaptation of The Hunger Games, which would become one of the biggest smash hits of 2012. As if that weren't heady enough for an actress only 22 years old, Lawrence earned stellar reviews for her work opposite Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook, a critical and popular hit at the end of that year that earned Lawrence the Oscar for Best Actress. ~ Cammila Collar, Rovi

Set in the era before Professor Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr became mortal enemies as Professor X and Magneto, respectively, director Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class follows the two former allies as they lead a powerful team of mutants on a mission to save the planet from nuclear annihilation. Charles (James McAvoy) and Erik (Michael Fassbender) were just young men when it began to appear as if the world was careening toward destruction. As the Doomsday Clock ticks faster toward midnight, the time comes to take action. Realizing they could use their unique powers to avert a global thermonuclear war during the Bay of Pigs crisis, the two powerful mutants launch an intense recruitment campaign with the support of Dr. Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) and the CIA. Before long, Charles and Erik have assembled a crack team that includes Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Banshee (Caleb Landry Jones), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Angel (Zoe Kravitz), Havok (Lucas Till), and Darwin (Edi Gathegi). Meanwhile, the malevolent Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) plots to plunge the world into war with the help of villainous mutants Riptide (Alex Gonzalez), Azazel (Jason Flemyng), and Emma Frost (January Jones). In the process of saving humanity, however, Charles and Erik clash, setting the stage for Professor X to lead the X-Men in the fight for good as Magneto and the Brotherhood spread chaos and destruction on a global scale. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Actress-turned-director Lori Petty makes her feature directorial debut with this period drama set in 1976 that explores a typical day in the life of a decidedly atypical teen named Agnes. Some folks have the luxury of living each day to the fullest, but for Agnes every day is a grueling struggle for survival; her mother is strung out on drugs, her home has been overrun by degenerates, and her only father figure is a pimp. For Agnes and her two younger sisters, this particular day will be marked by both tragedy and triumph, but which will resonate most in the days and weeks to follow? Selma Blair, Bokeem Woodbine, and David Alan Grier star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Everyone is thrown for a loop (or is it a hoop?) when Lynn Hayden (Samantha Smith), Julie Teeger's much-admired high school basketball coach, dies in what seems to be a freak accident with a hair dryer. Monk (Tony Shalhoub) of course suspects murder, but this seems unlikely since Lynn apparently had no enemies. To get to the truth, Monk signs up as assistant to the school's interim coach, who happens to be Julie's mom (and Monk's caregiver) Natalie (Traylor Howard). Amidst a great deal of personal agony over having to actually stoop to physical exertion (and in a sweaty, smelly high school gym to boot) Monk uncovers a link between Lynn's demise and a recent forest fire--to say nothing of a similarly suspicious death at a country club three years before. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
