Comic and filmmaker Albert Brooks serves his country while struggling to get some laughs in this offbeat satiric comedy. Brooks plays himself, a comedic filmmaker whose most recent success was providing the voice of a fish for an animated feature and who has just been passed by as director for a remake of Harvey. As Brooks wonders what's going to happen next with his career, his wife (Amy Ryan), and his daughter, he's approached by government representatives who want him for a special assignment. The State Department, eager to better understand the cultural gap between the United States and the Middle East, have been directed by the president to make a study of what makes Muslims laugh. Brooks is asked to fly to India and Pakistan and bring back a 500-page report on Muslim humor; told the Medal of Freedom may be his if he comes through, Brooks accepts. With a pair of State Department officials in tow, Stuart (John Carroll Lynch) and Mark (Jon Tenney), and some help from a local assistant, Maya (Sheetal Sheth), Brooks sets out to find the funny bone of India's and Pakistan's Muslim communities, though it doesn't take long to find out what they don't find funny -- his standup act. Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World was originally set for release in the United States by Sony Pictures Classics, but when they became nervous over the film's title, they dropped the project and it was picked up for distribution by Warner Independent Pictures. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

An immigrant family finds their belief in the American way of life shaken by prejudice and xenophobia in this independent drama. Arjun Singh (Kavi Raz) is an educated man from the Punjab region of India who left behind a career as a college professor to come to the United States with his wife, Baljit (Archana Puran Singh). While Arjun now earns his living repairing cars, he loves his adopted home, and believes America's freedoms and opportunities will give his children a better life than he ever knew in India. While Arjun and Baljit continue to observe the cultural traditions they learned in India, their daughter, Simrun (Mehrunnisa Hassan), and son, Ranjit (Arsh Singh), follow the way of the West, with Simrun going so far as to refuse the marriage arranged for her by her parents in favor of wedding a boy she met at college. But just as Arjun and his family begin to feel they've finally put down roots in the United States, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, turn the world upside down, and while they are neither Muslim nor from the Middle East, the family feels the frequent sting of prejudice as many around them close ranks against "foreigners" -- even when they're hardworking American citizens. The Gold Bracelet was the first directorial effort from veteran actor Kavi Raz, who also plays Arjun. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Moonlighting as the bodyguard for eccentric Mrs. Hornby (Elmarie Wendel), Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) suspects that the old woman is being ripped off by her business advisor. In other cases, the squad is plagued by the ubiquitous presence of a woman posing as a cop -- a subplot which thickens when the woman's horrible secret is revealed. Pisano (Lenny Venito), the snitch who previously led the 15th to the body of Danny Sorenson, may be the key to solving a robbery-murder at a restaurant. And on a personal level, Andy is not too convincing when he expresses indifference to Connie's (Charlotte Ross) blind date. Also, Rita Ortiz (Jacqueline Obradors) continues to suffer from the jealousy of her husband. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The leading lady of the Christmas tale knows just what she wants for Christmas and she lets Macy's Santa know, too. She wants nothing more than the reuniting of her recently divorced parents. Bordering on being a Miracle on 34th Street re-make, this film follows much the same theme, but the kids here get more involved as they thwart any likelihood of romantic success between their mom and her new boyfriend and try ever-so-hard to make Mommy and Daddy love each other again. A reunion does result, but it's a lackluster one and so's this film, which was generally seen as a little too contrived and way too bland. ~ Rovi

A doctor dabbles in magical resurrection with horrific consequences in this supernatural thriller adapted from the novel by Stephen King. When Dr. Louis Creed (Dale Midkiff) and his family move from Chicago to an old farmhouse in rural Maine, their only concern is the busy highway that flanks their new home. Louis' family -- wife Rachel (Denise Crosby), daughter Ellie (Blaze Berdahl), and toddler Gage (Miko Hughes) -- soon meet kindly old duffer Jud Crandall (Fred Gwynne), who introduces them all to the local attractions, including a pet cemetary built on the remains of a Native American burial ground. When Rachel and the kids head off to visit Louis' in-laws, Ellie's cat gets flattened by a truck. Jud counsels Louis to bury it in the old Indian portion of the cemetary; the next day, it returns from the dead, carrying with it the stink of the earth and a decidedly bad attitude. Shortly thereafter, Louis is tempted to use the cemetary's magical powers again when his son suffers a tragic accident. A snarling kitty, it turns out, is nothing compared to the horror of a little boy with no soul and a taste for scalpels. In addition to adapting his own novel for the screen, writer King appeared in a brief cameo as the minister presiding over Gage's funeral. Director Mary Lambert would return with Pet Sematary Two. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

A deaf couple is ambushed, and the husband is fatally shot. As he lies dying, the man conveys his last words to his wife via sign language--thereby giving Huntern(Fred Dryer) the only clue (an extremely thin one) as to the killer's identity. With the help of a police interpreter, Hunter interrogates the three most likely suspects--the wife, a jealous brother and a disgruntled suitor--who like victim are all deaf. As it turns out, however, the dead man's vast art collection holds the key to unlocking the mystery. This episode was adapted from a novel by H. Edward Hunsberger, a master in the realm of "locked-room" whoddunits. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The made-for-TV Three Kings stars Jack Warden, Lou Diamond Phillips and Stan Shaw as three patients in a Los Angeles-area mental institution. Dressed as the Three Wise Men for a Christmas pageant, the trio is suddenly struck with the delusion that they are really their Biblical counterparts. As TV cameras grind away, the three ersatz Kings ride out of the Pageant--on camels--and into the mean streets of LA. As the story draws to its conclusion, the three escapees find themselves providing Christmas cheer for a group of homeless people on the outskirts of the city. Aaron Spelling's original story veers dangerously close to being devoured by its own cuteness at times, but Stirling Silliphant's script for Three Kings keeps the whimsy in check and the sillier events reasonably credible. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Police Chief Rawlings (Chuck Conners) defends the town of Kokomo, Indiana from an invasion of Libyan terrorists in this grade "B" action feature. The villains attack a nuclear power plant and hold a high-school class hostage. Rawlings' negotiations are comically taken from Dog Day Afternoon as he tries to diffuse the volatile situation, and he trains the high-school students in guerilla warfare to battle the invaders. A thrilling car chase is one of the highlights of the film. Conners, the former pro baseball player-turned-actor, once again dons his Brooklyn Dodger jacket for this picture. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Under Siege was first telecast in February 1986, a time when the notion of foreign terrorists in America was still speculative fiction. A militant group sets off explosives at US Army bases, then branches out to such civilian targets as crowded shopping centers. FBI director Peter Strauss discovers that these outrages are possibly being orchestrated by Iranian extremists. Despite pressure to take retaliatory action, US President Hal Holbrook continues to preach moderation, until he can be certain of the true source of the attacks. Under Siege was cowritten by Bob Woodward, of All the President's Men fame. Little Rock, Arkansas substitutes for Washington DC in several scenes, including one startling sequence set in the Capitol Building. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Murder: By Reason of Insanity was inspired by a disastrous series of events occurring in New York State in 1979. Candice Bergen portrays a Polish immigrant housewife whose husband Jurgen Prochnow has subjected her to years of physical abuse. At first, she tells herself that he is acting out of frustration over his business failures, but the attacks become increasingly life-threatening. Adjudged mentally unbalanced, Prochnow cannot be sent to prison, but instead is checked into a hospital. Thanks to bureaucratic oversights and sheer laxity, Prochnow walks out of the hospital, fully intending to carry out his death threat against his wife. Despite her frenzied phone calls to the authorities, and the many empty restraining orders issued by the courts, Ms. Bergen's ultimate fate is inexorable. Made for television, Murder: By Reason of Insanity has been released to videocassette under the irresponsibly antiseptic title My Sweet Victim. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In yet another ostensible thriller about deadly germs wreaking havoc on human life and psyches, this is a frenetic, uneven story about germs going berserk in a sealed-off lab, giving rise to infected humans more berserk than the germs. The lab is secretly developing weapons of biological warfare, and when an accident occurs that immediately seals off the building, it looks as though some of the workers have died from their exposure to the invisible killers. But, lo and behold, these apparent corpses leap up from death and, rabidly homicidal, they can hardly wait to kill off any human in their vicinity. This makes the potential victims about as vicious as their attackers in their need to escape from room to room, turning the lab into a kind of asylum for the homicidally insane. No wonder that chief cop Cal Morse (Sam Waterston) has a job and a half on his hands -- made worse because his girlfriend (Kathleen Quinlan) is in there with the loonies. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
