Thirteen progressively bizarre episodes are included in the portfolio of The Adventures of Pete & Pete's third season. As before, the titular siblings, Big Pete and Little Pete, are portrayed respectively by Michael Maronna and Danny Tamberelli, with Hardy Rawls as the boys' lawn-obsessed father and Judy Grafe as their mother, a human radio receiver (it makes sense once you see the show). The season opener "35 Hours" features none other than Patricia Hearst as the very nice Mrs. Kretchmar. In other episodes, "Dance Fever" affords viewers the only opportunity to see Iggy Pop and Luscious Jackson on the same episode; Adam West appears as seriously deranged school principal Kent Schwinger in "Last Laugh" and "Allnighter"; and the series finale, "Saturday," could just as easily have been titled "The Road to Wellville" were one in a perversely whimsical mood. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Michelle Trachtenberg and Iggy Pop make their first series appearances as the unusually perceptive preteen Nona Mecklenburg and her thick-eared father Mr. Mecklenburg during season two of the surreal Nickelodeon sitcom The Adventures of Pete & Pete. The first of the season's 13 episodes, "Grounded for Life," finally solves the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa -- but you'll have to be paying very close attention! In other season highlights, Bebe Neuwirth of Cheers fame appears as Mail Lady McGintee in "The Call"; LL Cool J and Chris Elliot show up in "Sickday" (an episode reportedly banned in those countries where playing hooky from school is practically a capital offense); and Steve Buscemi and Janeane Garofalo are on hand for the existential entry "X=Why?" Season two's final episode, "On Golden Pete," guest stars David Johansen, (aka "Buster Poindexter,") as a park ranger. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

After its introduction in one-minute comedy sketch form in 1990, the cheekily absurdist sitcom The Adventures of Pete & Pete was formalized as a weekly half-hour in December of 1993. Eight surreal episodes were churned out during the first season, beginning with "Day of the Dot," guest-starring comedienne Ellen Cleghorne as a bus driver in a lengthy spoof of the avant-garde short subject The Dot. In "Nightcrawlers," Little Pete (Danny Tamberelli) aspires to break the World Non-Sleeping Record. "King of the Road" finds the Wrigley family inadvertently providing a nudie show during their yearly visit to Hoover Dam. Jude Ciccolella appears as Big Pete's (Michael Maronna) psycho shop teacher Mr. Slum in "Join or Die." "Rangeboy" is highlighted by a guest appearance by Frank Gifford, cunningly cast as Frank Gifford. One week later, another sports icon, John McLaughlin, is on hand for "When Petes Collide." Troubles in gym and history class dictate the action in "Don't Tread on Pete." And "Hard Day's Pete" shines the spotlight on Polaris, the rock band that performs the series' theme song -- on the front lawn of Pete and Pete's house. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The third pairing of comic actors Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder was much less successful than their previous team-ups, Silver Streak(1976) and Stir Crazy (1980). Wilder plays Dave, the deaf proprietor of a newsstand and employer of blind gambler Wally (Pryor). When Wally's bookie is shot and killed at the stand, Dave and Wally are arrested for the crime. Since the deaf Dave had his back turned and didn't see the crime, while the blind Wally only heard it, the clues they have to offer the police are slim: Dave's glimpse of a shapely leg and Wally's whiff of a perfume called Shalimar. It turns out the dead man was in possession of a coin that he dropped into Dave's tip box, which Wally is now carrying. The coin contains a valuable microchip sought by crime baron Sutherland (Anthony Zerbe), for whom hired killer Eve (Joan Severance) and her British partner Kirgo (Kevin Spacey) are working. Posing as lawyers, Eve and Kirgo spring Dave and Wally from jail, leading to a series of misadventures as the coin changes hands and the two sensory-challenged pals attempt to learn who has framed them and why. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

A CIA agent recruits a meek family man for a secret mission involving interstellar communication and copious violence in this tongue-in-cheek buddy flick from the writer/producer of The Golden Child. Insurance salesman Bob Wilson (John Ritter) is the kind of guy who stands by while suburban punks steal his kid's bike. Nick Pirandello (James Belushi) is the exact opposite -- a brash, womanizing alpha male revered within the CIA for his many successful secret missions. When a fellow agent who looks exactly like Bob gets killed just days before he's due to head up a very delicate mission, Nick recruits the reluctant Bob to help out. As Bob gets drawn deeper into a world of Russian hit men, transsexual beauties, and secret-agent hijinks, he slowly gains the self-confidence that's always escaped him. Meanwhile, he's constantly at the mercy of Nick's tongue-in-cheek humor, so he's a little skeptical when Nick reveals that the big meeting is with a group of aliens who want to share their advanced technology with humans. As it turns out, there may be something to Nick's outrageous story -- if only Bob can survive long enough to find out. The lone directorial credit for screenwriter/producer Dennis Feldman, Real Men features Barney Miller vet Barbara Barrie in a supporting role as Nick's placid, accommodating mother. ~ Brian J. Season three of Hunter starts with a bang--actually several bangs--as police detective Rick Hunter (Fred Dryer) manages to shoot down one of two escaping murderers. Alas, the other killer gets away thanks to the interference of "gonzo" TV reporter Raoul Mercado (a thinly disguised "Geraldo" type played by Michael Wren). After Hunter has Mercado arrested, the reporter launches a personal vendetta against the detective, publicly raking him over the coals for his violent arrest record. Thus it is that when Mercado is killed by a car bomb, Hunter is Suspect Number One. With this episode, Captain Wyler (Bruce Davidson) is promoted to Deputy Chief; and Garret Morris becomes a regular in the formerly recurring role of street hustler Sporty James. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Barret Oliver stars as robot boy Daryl (Data Analyzing Robot Youth Lifeform). The film begins with an intense chase through hairpin mountain roads as a helicopter chases after a racing automobile and the driver of the car shoves a young boy out of the door. The child is rescued and is adopted by Joyce (Mary Beth Hurt) and Andy (Michael McKean) Richardson, a well-meaning, childless couple. It is only after the Richardsons have adopted Daryl and find that the child can't stop hitting home runs that they realize their adopted son is, in fact, a robot. The Richardsons decide to take Daryl back home -- home being a top security research facility where scientists Dr. Jeffrey Stewart (Josef Sommer) and Ellen Lamb (Kathryn Walker) have "given birth" to the boy robot. Once at the research facility, the Richardsons realize that government forces are determined to destroy Daryl and anyone who knows about him. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide
