Italo Bombolini (Anthony Quinn) is the mayor of the hillside village of Santa Vittorio. The wine-loving town leader erases a pro-Mussolini slogan when he hears of the fascist being killed and hanged from a meathook. His wife Rosa (Anna Magnani) throws him out of their wine shop when he and his friends celebrate and he gives away too much wine. When he hears the retreating Nazi Army will soon be in town, hundreds of villagers turn out to hide the wine in an old Roman cave. The people work day and night, hiding 1 million bottles just before the Nazis enter the town. SS officers threaten death to anyone who withholds the wine. Italo presents a single bottle to the irate general (Hardy Kruger), as the hapless Germans are powerless to force the villagers to produce the coveted bottles. Not even a pistol to the head of their beloved mayor is effective as the town stands by, watching in complete silence. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

An episodic, funny, though uneven spoof of human manners and foibles, this comedy by Vittorio de Sica begins in Naples when a disembodied voice announces to the city's residents "The Last Judgment will begin at 6:00 p.m." Naturally, not all are immediately willing to accept this statement -- but not for long. As comic vignettes unfold, the good citizens soon become even better as they try to undo past and present sins, just in case. There is a long list of top actors that show up briefly in the story, everyone from Alberto Sordi to Jimmy Durante, Melina Mercouri, Anouk Aimée, Vittorio Gassmann, and many, many others. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Eddie Constantine is Lemmy Caution in everything but name in this French spy parody. Constantine has been assigned by Interpol to work as a double agent. Little does he know how many spies are on to this deception and how short his life expectancy has become. Italian comedian Renato Rascel is one of the principals involved, giving one an idea of the "seriousness" of the proceedings. Destination Fury is one of four 1961 films made by the very gainfully employed Mr. Constantine. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Meant primarily for the moppets who naturally love animals, this conventional story by director Edmond Sechan concerns Medard (Renato Raschel), a hard-working zoo keeper, and a talking bear (Gaucha). Medard has his problems because his boss Chappius (Francis Blanche) is a despot whose only pleasure in life is making Medard's life miserable whenever he can. Once Medard discovers that one particular bear can talk, he tries to convince others of his discovery -- to no avail. But the bear opens up to Medard and tells him that he is pining for a lovely polar bear just outside of his reach, thanks to zoo barriers. The compassionate Medard manages to bring the talking bear and the object of his affections together for one brief night, and in return he gets an unexpected reward from an unexpected quarter. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Even though this period drama is leisurely to especially slow in parts, it tells an entertaining story about Policarpo (Renato Rascel), a sincere and honest, low-level clerk in the government bureaucracy. Policarpo, dissatisfied with his salary, is moving through the labyrinth of paperwork necessary to justify and obtain a raise. Even though he refuses to go outside the bounds of the complex system, he begins to take heart when his daughter finally makes a good choice between two suitors. She chooses his boss's son. Though as Policarpo soon finds out, that union may not help him after all. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Roy Rowland directs the musical Arrivederci Roma (The Seven Hills of Rome), intended as a showcase for the talents of famous operatic tenor Mario Lanza. American singer Marc (Lanza) gets into a fight with his girlfriend, Carol (Peggie Castle). He follows her to Rome in an attempt to win back her affections. On the train, he meets an Italian woman named Rafaella Marini (Marisa Allasio), who is supposed to be moving in with her uncle. Marc gives her a ride and they discover that the uncle has left for South America. With nowhere to go, Rafaella stays with Marc and his cousin Pepe Bonelli (Renato Rascel), which leads to eventual romance. The narrative allows for Lanza to do his serviceable impressions of popular singers like Perry Como, Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong, and many others. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

As the title indicates, this Renato Rascel vehicle is a takeoff of the Jules Dassin "caper" film Rififi. Rascel plays a nightclub owner who falls in with a gang of thieves, headed by quirky mastermind Dario Fo. After several comic preliminaries, the gang embarks upon a meticulously pre-planned jewel robbery. Not surprisingly, with Rascel involved, the plan does not exactly go off like clockwork. For those not interested in comedy or crime melodrama, Rascel-Fifi offers the considerable charms of the pulchritudinous Franca Rame. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Marlene Dietrich and Vittorio De Sica grace this comical yet dramatic Italian tale of a tumultuous love affair between two compulsive gamblers who meet in Monte Carlo. Though both are down on their luck, they dress affluently and that is what attracts them to each other. Romantic sparks fly until they learn the truth about each other. This leads Dietrich to begin an affair with a rich American widower. His teenage daughter falls for De Sica but he feels himself too old for her and rejects her. Eventually Dietrich and the American decide to marry, but before the wedding takes place, De Sica has a major winning streak. But being an addict, he does not know when to stop and begins losing again. Fortunately, his valet intervenes by knocking him unconscious. Later, when he awakens, De Sica vows that he will never gamble again and prepares to go home to his native Naples. When Dietrich learns this she is distraught and realizing she cannot marry the Yankee, tells him the truth about her feelings for De Sica thereby freeing herself to follow him. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Unlike many multistoried films of the 1950s, Gran Varieta is the handiwork of a single solitary director--though five writers collaborated on the screenplay. The film is divided into five separate playlets, all unified by a "backstage" theme. In the first, Maria Fiore plays an aspiring singer who gets more than she bargains for upon attaining stardom. The second tale involves quick-change artist Alberto Sordi, who is successful in love only when he decides to be "himself". Carlo Croccolo stars in the third segment as a variety performer whose "soldier act" results in his early demise. The fourth (and best) story features Vittorio DeSica as a once-famous actor, now on the skids. Gran Varieta concludes with a satirical story about a fascist-government censor, played by Renato Rascal, who has his work cut out for him when he tries to clean up a girlie show. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Ho Scelto L'Amore (I Chose Love) is a satire of the Cold War, Italian style. Soviet flunkey Boris Popovitch (Renato Rascal) is sent on a goodwill mission to Rome, where he is to deliver a symbolic dove of peace to a group of WW II freedom fighters. Somehow or other, Boris winds up in Venice minus the dove. As he searches up street and down canal for the missing bird, he meets and falls in love with luscious flower-girl Maria (Marisa Pavan). Through her, Boris discovers the joys and benefits of democracy. Ho Scelto L'Amore is basically fill-in-the-blanks stuff, but it's fun while it lasts. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Released almost simultaneously with his Ho Scelto L'Amore, Italian funnyman Renato Rascal's Attanasio, Cavallo Vanesio (Attanasio, the Vain Horse) is little more than a photographed stage play. The diminutive star plays a jockey working in the U.S., who dreams of owning his own horse. He realizes this goal with the help of three dizzy Southern belles (the Peters Sisters), but the nag is stolen by crooks. Will Rascel make it to the big race on time? Actually, he has plenty of time, since this lightweight musical comedy runs a full four hours in its original form! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The classic Nicolas Gogal fable The Overcoat is given a European flavor by Italian filmmaker Alberto Lattuada; some consider the film to be Lattuada's best "psychological study." Comedian Renato Rascel plays a nebbishy nobody who spends his life-savings on a fancy overcoat. Suddenly, the nobody becomes a somebody, proving beyond doubt that clothes make the man. And then one day, the overcoat is stolen...Fleshing out the short-but-bittersweet Gogol original are several colorful new characters, including a publicity-hungry small-town mayor, played by Giulio Stival. The background music was composed by director Lattuada's wife Felice. American prints of Il Cappato are missing a so-called "naughty" telephone exchange between the mayor and his silken mistress. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
