While assisting Deputy DA Carol Baldwin (Kathleen Lloyd) with her prosecution of a very wealthy and powerful man, Magnum is hired by an elderly woman (Celeste Holm) to locate the birth certificate for the child she'd given up for adoption nearly three decades earlier. What Magnum finds is evidence that Carol Baldwin herself is that child--and that there is a terrible secret regarding her birth parents. Rick (Larry Manetti) sets sail on a chartered fishing excursion with several suspicious-looking customers. Hours later, Rick's boat drifts back to the dock with no one on board. The authorities are certain that Rick and his passengers have been lost at sea, but Magnum suspects otherwise. Assisting our hero in his subsequent investigation is Det. While scuba-diving in the Kahuku lagoon, Magnum (Tom Selleck) thinks that he sees a boy named Kel'il Parker (Kahale Ahina) swimming alongside him. Trouble is, Kel'il was killed five years before in a boating accident. Ever on the lookout for a quick buck, T.C. (Roger E. Mosley) agrees to deliver a mysterious briefcase to Oahu. En route, T.C.'s chopper plunges into the ocean, and he ends up in the hospital in a comatose state. Flying in the face of convential wisdom, Magnum (Tom Selleck) is certain that the crash was no accident, and he is determined to bring in the men responsible for T.C.'s plight. It's a personal matter for Quincy's boss Dr. Astin (John S. Ragin) when his teenage niece Melody (Karlene Crockett) is charged with vehicular homicide. An alcoholic who suffers from lapses of memory, Melody may have been behind the wheel in the car crash that claimed the life of her best friend. Making matters worse, Astin himself is obliged by law to make a ruling on the case. Veteran police officer Tommy Bates (Neville Brand) catches Billy Harris (Richard Stanley), a young car thief whose wild behavior indicates that he is high on "angel dust." During the arrest, Harris dies, and his accomplice Steve (Michael Horton) accuses Bates of choking the boy to death. Lt.
