This is an effective and entertaining look at a popular trio of femme singers in Mexico during the early 1930s. Directed and written by Rogelio A. Gonzalez and based on a story by Isaac Diaz Araiza, the musical biopic details the rise to fame of the Garnica Asencio Trio, enacted by Amalia Mendoza, Rosa Quintana, and well-known singer Lola Beltran. Although the story plays fast and loose with historical fact at times, the ambiance of the early '30s and the tunes are excellently rendered, giving an upbeat glimpse into Mexico's "golden age" of song. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Another low-budget, quickly-filmed, weak comedy set in a Western ambiance, Paloma Brava is directed by Rogelio Gonzalez, who has made better movies, and stars Rosita Quintana as a heroine beset by a series of challenging circumstances. She is the "angry pigeon" of the title. ("Brava" means angry and not "brave" as in English, and in addition it refers to someone with a temper always at the ready.) Even the better-known actors in the cast cannot resuscitate this comedy. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Rosita Quintana, Miguel Aceves Mejia, (more)

Popular Mexican star Pedro Armendariz and Rosita Quintana star in this melodrama about a showgirl, rough around the edges, who falls in love with one of the town's greediest merchants. The man is self-centered enough to fix the prices on kidney beans so high that this staple of the poorer classes is out of their reach. The showgirl transfers her affections to a young doctor for awhile, a man who makes her see the problem in her former boyfriend's price fixing. Whether or not she'll remain with the doctor is in question though, once the merchant starts to allow ethics and decent business practices back into his life. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

A Los Cuatro Vientos (To the Four Winds) is a showcase for the musical talents of Mexican tenor Miguel Aceves Mejia and singer-dancer Rosita Quintana. The plot is the usual mixture: a group of aspiring entertainers take all sorts of odd jobs, ever hoping for the Big Break. Quintana is especially amusing as a fiery brunette whose temperament keeps getting in her way. Despite the classical training of the two principals, both are called upon to sing "ranch" and "rural" ditties, usually with a measure of success. A Los Cuatro Vientos was written and directed by Adolfo Fernandez Bustamante, chief of the Mexico City amusements department. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

German Valdes stars in the Mexican musical Ay Que Bonitas Piernas. Starting out as a nobody, Valdes is promoted to superstardom by a savvy agent. From this point on, the film adheres to the venerable Hollywood formula, including pretty girls, a swelled heads, duplicitous producers, a fall from grace and a triumphant comeback. The musical highlights are as enjoyable to watch as they apparently were to perform. Chances are you'll be able to catch Ay Que Bonitas Piernas one one of the many Spanish-language cable outlets-or if not, you might see another of the German Valdes films like Viva Chihuahua (1947). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The English-language title of the Mexican La Ausente is The Absentee. The title is explained within the context of the story, though one has to be patient. Essentially, this is the story of one man's guilt: the wealthy man (Arturo Cordoba) has convinced himself that he has killed his wife, a fact that has a devastating effect on all that follows. Several plot convolutions come and go before the truth is out -- not to mention the truth behind the truth. More than one reviewer noted the resemblances between La Ausente and the much-earlier Hitchcock film Rebecca; also noted was the later film's choppy continuity, the result of one too much censorial edit. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
