Stephen Judson's documentary The Alps transports audiences to the majestic yet incomparably deadly ice wall known as The Eiger, situated nearly fourteen thousand feet about Switzerland. At that location, a courageous alpinist whose father died in a climbing accident amid the same peaks attempts to scale his way to the very top. The film both revels in scenic Alpine wonder and pays homage to the fortitude and shared spirit of the Swiss people who live near the Eiger. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

In this documentary from filmmaker Alexandra Lipsitz, the cameras roll to capture the fierce competitive spirit that defined the first annual U.S. Air Guitar Championship. Staged in Finland and featuring some of the fastest-fingered shredders on the planet, the U.S. Air Guitar Championship would bring a hobby once contained to the bedroom directly into the spotlight for all to enjoy. Featured jam sessions and interviews with both the performers and their "airhead" groupies offer a humorous look at an unlikely competition driven by pure showmanship. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Filmmaker A.J. Schnack draws from over twenty-five hours of audio taped interviews to offer an intimate meditation on the life of the man who changed the face of rock and roll in the 1990s in this film that uses materials originally gathered for music journalist Michael Azerrad's book Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana. From his early childhood to his discovery of music and his troubled attempts to make sense of his skyrocketing fame as a member of Nirvana, Cobain recounts his life in a series of previously unreleased recordings. By combining the interviews with footage of Aberdeen, Olympia, and Seattle - three Washington cities that played a major role in Cobain's tragically short life - director Schnack assembles a dreamlike journey into the mind of an oft-discussed but widely misunderstood legend. An ethereal score by Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Nirvana producer Steve Fisk, as well as songs by some of Cobain's favorite recording artists including David Bowie and The Melvins, merge with evocative imagery to strip away the legend and portray the subject as a real man whose talents stood in stark contrast to his ability to deal with the hardships of fame. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Explore the origins of Queen's influential and groundbreaking 1975 album A Night at the Opera in a probing documentary showcasing the faultless musicianship of members Roger Taylor, John Deacon, Brian May, and Freddie Mercury and showing just why rock scholars view the release as one of the greatest rock & roll albums of all time. Discussing the dramatic effect that the album had on the evolution of the band to the spot that it earned Queen in the annals of rock & roll history, interviews with producer Roy Thomas Baker, rockers Joe Perry and Ian Hunter, and a whole host of critics and industry veterans including Mick Rock, Joe Smith, and John Ingham reveal just why no true rock fan's collection is truly complete until they have purchased A Night at the Opera. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

With the ultimate throw-down, "There can be only one," Highlander captured the imaginations of fantasy fans seeking a well-executed swordplay epic, becoming a cult classic in the process. Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) is one of a waning few survivors of a clan of immortals. The breed have been dueling each other for centuries in the quest to be the last one remaining, and hence achieve a supreme enlightenment that would be dangerous in the wrong hands. The immortals can only die by decapitation, so they hunt each other through time and across continents to meet for each decisive duel, which will bring one of them a step closer to ultimate power. In present-day America, the troubled hero MacLeod lives a brooding and lonely existence, having lost his true love centuries ago. The evil Kurgan (Clancy Brown), an immortal who plans to use his power toward unspeakable ends, has fought MacLeod before but is still trying to finish him off. After emerging victorious from a parking garage skirmish with the third-to-last immortal, MacLeod knows that only Kurgan is left, and the two are on a collision path toward the inevitable. In the film's numerous flashbacks to the past, Sean Connery plays Ramirez, the immortal who first tutors MacLeod after the hero survives a mortal battle wound, prompting his fearful village to banish him. Roxanne Hart plays MacLeod's modern-day love interest, who tries to help him while struggling to believe his incredible story. The director's cut runs four minutes shorter. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide

Fans of the hard-rock group Queen will be delighted to discover this well-produced concert video, featuring the foursome in their July 27, 1986 performance in Budapest. Aside from an overview of the stadium they are to perform in and shots of them being deliriously received by fans, the vast bulk of the film is devoted to the performance of their best-known songs. The cameramen and producers are evidently fans, as reviewers noted that they fell in skillfully with the band's performance. Though there are no interviews, the film does include some brief shots of each of the band members as they play the tourist in the town. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
