Four guys whose lives are going nowhere discover to their horror that they have to go someplace (and soon) in this independent comedy-drama. A quartet of college graduates/dropouts are sharing a run-down house on the outskirts of L.A. -- a struggling writer (Timothy DiPri), a chronic burnout (Jason Oliver), a self-styled ladies' man (Mark Fite), and the one guy who actually pays attention to the bills and the rent (Todd Stanton). One day, the guys discover that their landlord is selling the house and that they'll soon be forced to vacate the premises, leaving them and their buddy who crashes on the couch (Jason Cross) with nowhere to go. Suddenly responsibility is staring them in the face, as they tear themselves away from the holy trinity of beer, pot, and cable television and look for jobs that will allow them to pay an actual security deposit. Left Overs was the debut feature from writer and director Jason Phillips -- it earned a theatrical release from noted oddball exploitation outfit Troma Team Pictures. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A Canadian production shot along the British Columbia coast, this is the story of a washed-up rock star who finds redemption. It was adapted for the screen by Paul Quarrington from his own award-winning novel. Desmond Howl (Maury Chaykin) is a faded music superstar who now lives a hermit's life in an out-of-the-way oceanside mansion. Living off residuals from previous hits, Howl spends all his time and energy in his state-of-the-art home recording studio trying to compose whale music. He hopes to write a symphonic piece, using the whales' own sounds, that will have the power to summon the marine mammals from the depths. Howl is haunted by hallucinations and nightmares involving his brother Paul, who recently died, apparently by his own hand. Howl also has to deal with his ex-wife, who meddles in his affairs. He manages to shut out these interferences until a young runaway arrives at his doorstep. Claire Lowe (Cyndy Preston) gradually captures the jaded musician's heart with her need for caring, and their relationship becomes a metaphor for the tender music Howl is trying to create. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

Television flavor-of-the-month Richard Grieco made his feature-film debut in this juvenile spoof of James Bond films. He plays a high-school senior named Michael Corben who has flunked out of his French class, but has the chance to make up his grade on the French Club's summer trip to Europe. On the airplane booked to transport the French Club to France is another man by the name of Michael Corben, and this man happens to be a super-spy. When he is killed, the hapless high-school senior is mistaken for the real spy by British intelligence. He becomes involved in a mad plot by Augustus Steranko (Roger Rees) in which Steranko and his evil assistant Ilsa Grunt (Linda Hunt) plan to dominate the European continent by converting the gold standard to coins that will bear Steranko's likeness. Corben goes along with it when he is provided with a red sports car, a tuxedo, and some high-tech weapons. Along with all the spy accouterments, he latches onto a sexy helper -- Mariska (Gabrielle Anwar). ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Originally seen as a component of the Nintendo-inspired cartoon series Super Mario Brothers Super Show, The Legend of Zelda is the 13-episode saga of a feisty 15-year-old Princess, a bold adventurer of the same age named Link, and all-around sidekick Spryte. The "good guys" (actually two guys and one gal) are dedicated to keeping the Triforce of Wisdom out of the clutches of the evil Ganon and his Moblin flunkeys. In the opening episode "The Ringer", Ganon creates a monster to capture Zelda, thereby distracting Linky and Spryte from safeguarding the Triforce. In "Cold Spells", poor Sprite falls under Ganon's control. "The White Knight" shows that Zelda should know better to fall in love with anyone named Prince Façade. A kiss from a beautiful maiden has the reverse effect than the one expected, transforming Link into a frog, in "Kiss 'N' Tell." "Sing for the Unicorn" finds Link and Zelda uniting with a sylphlike girl, whose unicorn was stolen by Ganon, to rescue Zelda's dad the King. In "That Stinking Feeling", an unscheduled trip to the Underworld spoils a special moment for Link and Zelda. Then in "Doppelganger", Gannon summons the "Evil Zelda" and her own Moblins from an magic mirror. Link and Zelda are forced into a perilous trek through Ganon's domain in "Underworld Connections." An elaborate con job is called for when Ganon tries to get his mitts on Link's enchanted sword in "Stinging a Stinger" A black-magic necklace and a hard-working castle handyman figure into "Hitch in the Works". In "Fairies in the Spring", Link and Zelda call upon the Triforce to allow them to breathe underwater when the King is kidnapped (again!). Link's body is separated from his spirit, courtesy of Ganon's Evil Jar, in "The Missing Link" Finally, "The Moblins are Revolting"--and that's putting it mildly--when Ganon is toppled from power...or is he? ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

An obscure and offbeat novel by Andrew Neiderman comes to life as this strange, disturbing, but fairly compelling psychological thriller. The title refers to a life-sized medical dummy (the name is short for Pinocchio) through which strait-laced physician and would-be ventriloquist Doctor Linden (Terry O'Quinn) communicates with his children, Leon (David Hewlett) and Ursula (Cyndy Preston). Although Pin seems to have served a useful purpose by providing the emotionally distant Linden with a means of opening up to his family, the mannequin's importance gradually becomes a decidedly unhealthy influence for Leon, whose latent psychosis emerges fully after his father's death and compels him to "adopt" Pin as a member of the household. As Ursula, now a beautiful woman, begins to enjoy a relatively happy love life, Leon is consumed with jealousy and, goaded by the 'Pin' aspect of his personality, turns to murder as release. In its depiction of a psychotic who loses his will to an increasingly lifelike dummy, Pin is remarkably similar in theme to Richard Attenborough's Magic (which itself owed a debt to films like The Great Gabbo). Though it breaks no new ground in this respect, this quirky horror film does present an irresistibly eerie charm (thanks in large part to Hewlett's fine performance) and generates a decent amount of suspense, building to a chilling, if not entirely surprising, climax. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi
