François Berléand Movies
One of the sturdiest supporting players in French cinema for decades and an instantly recognizable face onscreen, François Berléand seemed as comfortable in genteel, laid-back slice-of-lifers as he did in saucy, edgy erotic dramas; throughout his career (unlike some of his Gallic colleagues), this distinguished performer remained squarely in France and seldom, if ever, worked internationally. Berléand accepted one of his earliest roles in director Bob Swaim's violent and cynical 1982 police thriller La Balance (an arthouse hit in its day), then subsequently worked for directors including Caroline Huppert (Signe Charlotte, 1986), Nicole Garcia (Place Vendôme, 1998), and Benoît Jacquot (Seventh Heaven, 1997).American arthouse audiences may most commonly associate the thespian, however, with a pair of collaborations: his two-film association with the eminent Louis Malle (for whom he played a priest in Au Revoir les Enfants and a bourgeois family member in May Fools) and his sizzling work for Catherine Breillat as a sadomasochistic professor in the director's groundbreaking, feminist-infused erotic drama Romance (1999). In 2006, Berléand teamed up with the celebrated Guillaume Canet for a supporting role in the psychological thriller Tell No One. Twenty-five years after losing his position as the conductor of the Bolshoi Orchestra for his refusal to fire the Jewish musicians, a once-famous musical director attempts to stage a late-career comeback. More than two decades later, he's working as a janitor in the same theater where he once conducted. In his spare time, Andreï and his wife stage mock communist demonstrations to entertain the locals. It's hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys in this slick, densely plotted thriller from France. Cash (Jean Dujardin) is a suave and well-mannered outlaw who specializes in grand-scale heists that turn on carefully constructed confidence games as much as muscle. When Cash's brother and partner in crime Solal (Clovis Cornillac) is killed by members of a rival outfit who try to force their way into a carefully planned heist, Cash assembles a new crew to rob the gunmen for their ill-gotten gains. Cash joins forces with Maxime Dubreuil (Jean Reno), a gifted veteran thief who brings along his beautiful protégé Garance (Alice Taglioni). As Cash, Maxime and Garance map out plans for the robbery of a lifetime, they're joined by Julia (Valeria Golino), a beautiful woman with a full compliment of criminal skills. But what they don't know is that Julia is actually an undercover police officer who is looking to shut down Cash's operation from the inside. Strong-armed into transporting the kidnapped daughter of the head of the Environmental Agency for the Ukraine from Marseilles to Odessa, skilled wheelman Frank Martin (Jason Statham) enlists the aid of Inspector Tarconi (François Berléand) in accomplishing the treacherous assignment in this action-packed installment of the popular action series produced by Luc Besson (who also co-scripts). Frank isn't exactly thrilled with his latest assignment, but when his employer turns up the pressure, he has little choice but to deliver. His cargo is a feisty young girl named Valentina (Natalya Rudakova) -- who just happens to be the daughter of Leonid Vasilev (Jeroen Krabbé), the powerful top dog of the Ukraine EPA. Now, as Frank makes his way through Stuttgart and Budapest on the road to the Black Sea, Vasilev's men besiege his car from all sides, and his cynical young passenger gets a bad case of Stockholm Syndrome. An innocent man is on the run after he's accused of murder and his spouse seemingly returns from the grave in this thriller from France. Alex Beck (François Cluzet) is a doctor who has slowly been putting his life back together after his wife Margot was murdered by a serial killer. Eight years on, Alex is doing well enough until he finds himself implicated in the murder of two people, with plenty of evidence pointing to him as the killer even though he knows nothing of the crimes. The same day, Alex receives an e-mail that appears to be from Margot (Marie-Josée Croze), which includes a link to a video clip that seems to be recent and features his late wife looking alive and well. Margot's message warns Alex that they are both being watched, and he struggles to stay one step ahead of the law as a gang of strong-arm men intimidate Alex's friends into telling whatever they might know about him. Alex's sister Anne (Marina Hands) persuades her well-to-do lover Helene (Kristin Scott Thomas) to hire a well respected attorney, Elisabeth Feldman (Nathalie Baye), to handle Alex's case. While Elisabeth tries to keep Alex out of jail, she learns that her client has a warrant out for his arrest, and Alex goes on the lam while he and his lawyer struggle to find out the truth about the murder as well as Margot's reappearance. A woman finds a new and unexpected romance with a younger man in this romantic drama set in France in 1950. Monique (Catherine Frot) is a woman in her late forties who has been left to run the family farm after her ne'er do well husband abandoned her during the war. Monique does nearly all the labor on the farm with the help of her teenage son Paulo (Jean-Pierre Moncorge), while her daughter Jeanne (Laura Smet), the local schoolmarm, lives nearby and helps Monique care for Prudence (Isabelle Sadoyan), her elderly mother-in-law. One day, a handsome drifter, Joseph (Gregori Derangere), happens by looking for work; he has experience in helping to run a farm, so Monique makes him the new hired hand. Joseph's presence causes no small stir among the local women, and flirty Angele (Mathilde Seigner) wastes no time letting Joseph know that's she's available and interested. However, Jeanne is also quite taken with the rugged but charming laborer, and while Monique has an on-again off-again romance with Maurice (Francois Berleand), a local politician who holds the deed to the farm, she's hardly immune to Joseph's spell, and finds herself a rival with her daughter for the affections of a man nearly half her age. A man looking for a reason to live gets more than he bargained for in this black comedy from France. Edy (François Berléand) is an insurance salesman who has fallen into a deep depression. Edy can scarcely work up the energy to do more than listen to his collection of classic jazz records (at full volume, much to his neighbor's annoyance) and drink all night, and he's made some unsuccessful attempts at suicide. However, Edy's efforts to end his own life not only don't do the job, they have a bad habit of destroying other people's property, and in one case killing an innocent bystander. Unsure of what to do, Edy calls upon his friend Louis (Philippe Noiret) for advice. Louis, who helped Edy get started in the insurance game, has some ideas of how to bring excitement back into his friend's life, but Edy becomes nervous when Louis leads him into a life of crime that gets messier with each passing day. Driver and muscle for hire Frank Martin returns in this sequel to the 2002 box-office hit. Frank Martin (Jason Statham) is a former special-forces officer who will transport anything anywhere for a price, and his latest assignment is acting as chauffeur for Jack Billings (Hunter Clary), the young son of politician Jefferson Billings (Matthew Modine), who has garnered no small amount of controversy for his aggressive efforts to stamp out the trade in illegal drugs. One day, Frank is to take Jack to the doctor for a checkup while his mother, Audrey (Amber Valletta), sets up a birthday party for the tyke. However, Jack's doctor is not who he appears to be -- he's actually Dimitri (Jason Flemyng), a Russian agent well versed in viruses who works with criminal kingpin Gianni (Alessandro Gassman). After a long and hard-fought chase with Frank, the bad guys get ahold of little Jack and hold him for ransom. The parents comply with their monetary demands and soon have their son back at home -- but little do they know that the boy has secretly been injected with a deadly and easily spread virus, which the terrorists hope to spread to the boy's powerful father and other politicians whom Jefferson will soon be addressing at a public event. He attends a dreary boarding school presided over by strict headmaster Rachin (François Berléand). An actor who lands the role of his life is forced into an even greater real-life acting challenge in this comedy drama from France. Maurice Kurtz (Stéphane Freiss) is an actor who is passionately in love with his wife, Perla (Bérénice Bejo), and wishes he could provide a better life for her. Maurice and his friends Simon (Lionel Abelanski), Sami (Olivier Sitruk), and Edouard (Stéphan Guérin-Tillié) work for a company that dubs American films into French when they're not looking for acting work, and when they learn that famous American filmmaker Grichenberg (Peter Coyote) is coming to Paris to shoot a Yiddish-language version of The Merchant of Venice, they all show up at a "cattle call" audition hoping to land bit parts. To his great surprise, Maurice's reading wins him the leading role of Shylock, and he quickly passes the good news along to Perla. As it happens, Perla needs some good news -- she's just been diagnosed with cancer, and her doctor tells her she's not long for the world. With Laurent Cantet's Time Out (L'Emploi du Temps) as an inspiration, actress-turned-director Nicole Garcia's fourth feature film, L'Adversaire, is a fictionalized account of what may have gone through the mind of real-life serial killer Jean-Claude Romand. Daniel Auteuil portrays Jean-Marc Faure, who, like Romand, had fooled his friends, family, and the bank for 18 years. Though those who knew Faure believed he was a physician employed by the World Health Organization in Geneva, he actually had no qualifications for the position, and had never held a real job. As part of the façade, Faure commuted to Switzerland daily, and obviously knew his way around the WHO. However, he had no job to perform there. Though he acquired an enormous overdraft at the bank, they believed he was a well-known doctor, and incorrectly assumed he would repay them shortly. Nearly two decades after his original untruth, Faure is nearly found out. An outlaw finds his life becoming all the more dangerous when he turns against a gang of criminals in this action drama. Frank Martin (Jason Statham) is a former Special Forces officer who lives on the French Mediterranean and has a lucrative second career as a underworld courier for hire. Martin will deliver anything anywhere, but he has three iron-clad rules - once the plan is in motion it cannot be changed, neither he nor his customers are to ever use their real names, and under no circumstances will he open the package. Martin is hired to make a delivery to a wealthy but unscrupulous American known as Wall Street (Matt Schulze), but after taking possession of the package he realizes that whatever is inside happens to be alive. Breaking his own rule, Martin opens the bag to discover a beautiful Asian woman, Lai (Shu Qi), who is bound and gagged. Lai briefly escapes, but Martin captures her, and delivers her to Wall Street as promised. However, after being given a parcel to deliver by Wall Street, Martin finds out what Wall Street is up to - in partnership with Lai's father Mr. Kwai (Ric Young), Wall Street is part of a scheme to smuggle Asian illegal aliens into France. Martin's conscience gets the better of him, and he sets out to rescue Lai and put Wall Street and Mr. Kwai out of business; however, as if this wasn't enough of a challenge, Martin discovers a French detective, Tarconi (Francois Berleand) has gotten wind of his illegal business. As one brother (Vincent London) is proving himself as a soldier, the other (Guillaume Canet) is noting the last requests of his dying mother, a respected herbalist within the community. Though Arnaud (Canet) promises to carry on the family tradition, his plans are thwarted by a vicious band of horsemen who beat him into a three-day coma. When he wakes unable to speak or recognize his family, his wife (Melanie Doutey) sends a mercenary to find Thomas (London). Guillemette (Douty) and Thomas set off in hopes of finding a book containing the plant know-how they need in order to honor the late herbalist's wishes, but the tradition is primarily oral, and the books available on the subject are closely guarded by the clergy. Though Guillemette herself cannot read, she realizes her family's future depends on the existence of such a book. Making things even more complicated is the romance blossoming between Guillemette and Thomas, despite the shared relationship with Arnaud. This costume drama is set in southern France during the middle of the 13th century, and was directed by Pierre Jolivet.

Directed by Ray Sandrine, Vivante follows the changes in the life of a young woman after being brutally gang-raped. When 19-year-old Parisian student Claire (Vahina Giocante) is sexually assaulted by four men, she doesn't tell anyone. Rather, she opts to drop out of school and begin a dangerous and decidely more promiscuous existence. Though her newfound habits of incessant clubbing, casual sex, and ominous flirtations with substance abuse leave her brother and father dismayed, Claire shows no signs of slowing down until a sympathetic older woman and a particularly sensitive boyfriend offer the insight needed to pull her out of an increasingly reckless lifestyle. Vicante also stars Samuel Jouy, Francois Berleand, Fanny Cottencon, and Pierre Cassignard.

Gilles de Maistre's political thriller Féroce (Ferocious) is about a man seeking revenge. Arab Alain (Samy Naceri) decides to join a fascistic French political party in order to assassinate the leader, Legle (Jean-Marc Thibault). Alain comes to this decision when his girlfriend's brother is murdered after he had defaced some of the party's paraphernalia. To improve the party's public stance on immigrants, Alain is hired as a security guard. Legle's daughter is attracted to Alain, who is tempted enough by the girl to abandon some of his religious convictions. Ferocious was screened at the Paris Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi
