The protagonists in this drama are caught in the sleaze of the lower echelons of Paris life and are trying to get out. Clara (Ann-Gisel Glass) arrives in the underbelly of the city after escaping a dysfunctional middle-class family, and moves in with Mimi (Christine Boisson), a prostitute. Clara also meets Paul (Francois Cluzet) an escaped convict, and a romantic relationship starts to simmer. Only two major hurdles stand in their way of escaping to a better life in another city. Paul is determined to avenge the death of his father which might make it easier for the police to find him, and Mimi's pimp is equally determined to coerce Clara into a life of prostitution. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Homosexual love among the ravages of war would be more convincing in this tale of a lesbian relationship if the war itself were more than just a vague backdrop to the story. November Messing (Gabriele Osburg) is a young Jewish woman forced to flee the growing Nazi menace in Germany in 1933. She finds a safe haven with a family in Paris, but then both the young man in the family and his sister, develop a romantic attachment to November. The relationship between November and the sister wins out, and although November is Jewish, there is no regard for the Gestapo who take over the city or the panic that forces many to leave Paris as soon as possible -- the Jewish woman and her lesbian relationship are oddly isolated. This split with reality influences other aspects of the film and may raise the objections of some viewers. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In order to fight gangsters, the local townspeople and some hippie tourists overcome their differences in this French comedy/thriller. After putting up with their antics for a while, the locals run the hippies out of town, but not far. The Countess' estate is nearby, and she wants them on her land to irritate the gangster who has forced his company on her. When the gangster makes the mistake of alienating the townspeople, his goose is cooked. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

The wealthy old lady (Françoise Rosay) in this French comic crime caper is largely unaware of the machinations of her servants and relatives to arrange to be the beneficiaries of her will. She is completely in the dark about their many unsuccessful efforts to bring her life to a premature conclusion. Her nurse (Anny Duperey) has ambitions along these lines and is in love with the woman's disinherited nephew (Bruno Pradal). She seems a better sort than the chauffeur (Philippe Clay) and some of the old lady's other relatives, who would stop at nothing. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
Originally Mourir D'Aimer, this 1970 French film is an "a clef" treatment of the once-notorious Gabrielle Russier case. Annie Girardot stars as a thirtyish schoolteacher, who falls in love with teenaged student Bruno Pradal. The boy's parents bring charges against the teacher, and the subsequent public scandal ruins the lives of both lovers. Director Andre Cayatte was a longtime opponent of the antiquated French legal system, so it's not surprising that the cards are stacked in favor of the teacher and student, with their accusers depicted in the foulest, ugliest terms. Adding to the film's partisan approach is the fact that the screenplay is based on a story written by the real Gabrielle Russier's attorney. To Die of Love is shameless in its manipulation of the audience; it also has the saving grace of being extremely well produced. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this French crime/action thriller, set in New York City, the young French waiter who stumbles on a killing at his restaurant could not be considered lucky, by any means. He decides to leave New York and return to France to avoid pursuit by the mobster who committed the murder. Unfortunately, he has left too powerful a memento with his American mistress for her to forget that she loves him, for she is pregnant. Even though she marries another, this only adds another person to the list of people searching for him: police, mobster, mistress, mistress's husband. Things look even worse for him when the mobster and the police join forces. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
