Embittered Vietnam veteran Nick Stratton (Nick Stratton) owns an appareal factory where his underpaid workers, mostly Vietnamese refugees, labor under sweatshop conditions. Monica (Roma Downey) shows up to teach lessons in American citizenship to Nick's long-suffering employees, including a girl named Am-Nhac (Jennifer Paz). The angel's real goal, of course, is to redeem the apparently iredeemable Nick by forcing him to confront a traumatic memory from his wartime past, in which he was dishonorably discharged for trying to do the right thing at the wrong time. Unfortunately, Monica's efforts are unwittingly undermined by fellow angel Andrew (John Dye), whose zeal to expedite Nick's salvation has disastrous--and explosive--consequences. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Angel of Death Andrew (John Dye) is working as a hired hand at a Montana ranch owned by married couple Molly and Jordan Avery (Julie White, Kevin Kliner). When Molly is diagnosed with terminal cancer, she balks at informing Jordan, who is enjoying his 40th birthday party. Having assumed that Molly is his current assignment, Andrew gently advises her that it would be best tell Jordan the bad news--and is subsequently consumed by guilt when Jordan ends up committing suicide! But as it happens, there is more to this tragedy than meets the eye...and besides, Andrew's actual "client" is neither Molly nor Jordan, but their son Jimmy (Bobby Edner). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Returning home to attend her sister Linda's law-school graduation, a woman named Holly (Elizabeth Berridge) becomes painfully aware that Linda (Gabrielle Carteris) is a victim of spousal abuse. When Linda's husband Ray (J.C. MacKenzie) goes overboard with his violence, Holly takes drastic action, grabbing a gun and killing Ray! Unfortunately, Linda refuses to admit that Ray had beaten her, and it looks like Holly is in for a lengthy prison term unless her erstwhile guardian angel Monica (Roma Downey), in concert with fellow angel Andrew (John Dye)--already on the scene as hockey coach for Linda's son Alex (Joe Pichler)--acts quickly. This episode was originally slated to air on December 7, 1997. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
All that has been keeping the marriage of Scott and Michelle Tanner (Bruce Boxleitner, Melissa Gilbert) together is their commitment to save their 17-year-old son Mark (Zack Graham) from a drug habit. Now Mark has been killed in a bank robbery--and worse, his dad Scott, a hostage negotiator, was there when it happened. Convinced that Mark had been withdrawing money to buy drugs, the Tanners feel they have completely failed, and a divorce is inevitable. It is up to Monica (Roma Downey), here posing as Scott's partner, to prove that the couple's efforts have not been in vain--and this requires a very special screening of the documentary video Mark was working on just before he died. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Expectant parents Bill and Joanne McNabb (Bill Smitrovich, Betsy Brantley) are torn apart by the news that their unborn child has Down Syndrome. Though Joanne wants to keep the baby, Bill is leaning in the opposite direction--and, out of shame over having an "imperfect" child, he has told Joanne to keep the baby's condition a secret until a final decision is made. Though angels Monica (Roma Downey) and Andrew (John Dye) are on hand to help alleviate the tension, it falls to another angel named Taylor (Chris Burke), himself a Downs child, to lead the McNabbs towards the right decision--but not before a near-fatal disaster! This episode features a piquant reunion of actors Bill Smitrovich and Chris Burke, respectively cast as father and son on the earlier series Life Goes On. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Monica (Roma Downey) is transformed into an eighty-year-old woman to gain the trust of a bitter, self-loathing, desperately lonely WW2 veteran named George Zarko (Darren McGavin), aka "The Colonel". Our heroine's efforts to help Zarko succeed only in incurring the wrath of Stefanie Hancock (Christina Pickles), the martinet head nurse at the retirement home where the elderly soldier resides. Worse still, Monica's elderly roommate Lorraine (Gwen Verdon) insists upon playing matchmaker between the incognito angel and "The Colonel", even though Tess (Della Reese) has explicitly warned Monica not to get too close to the old man. The various crises are alleviated only when "The Colonel" reveals an embarrassing secret about his past. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Now a lawyer, Tess (Della Reese) is hired to represent the cancer-victim plaintiffs in a class-action suit against the Fairchild Tobacco Company. Ironically, the company's main attorney Marc Hamilton (Kadeem Hardison) is the son of two former Fairchild employees--one of whom is suffering from terminal lung cancer. Determined to enjoy a life of wealth and luxury, Hamilton has renounced his humble roots and cast his lot with Fairchild's duplicitious CEO J.D. Sinclair (Tim Dekay). Apparently, the only villains totally beyond redemption on Touched by an Angel are those who manufacture cigarettes--but there's still hope for the bullheaded but inherently decent Marc Hamilton. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
