A long parade of actors and actresses pop up in an unconnected series of skits, vignettes, and sight gags in this comedy anthology by Jean Curtelin. Among the sketches performed is one with Jean Carmet playing a man from the sticks woefully burdened with the challenge of getting through a dog food commercial on less than one tank of intelligible French. Another skit shows a silent duel between an airport custodian and an automatic door, while another with the renowned Michel Galabru sets up a strange teacher-student exchange. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Alain Delon stars as Marc, a small-time swindler and Casanova who finds himself on the hit-list of an American gangster. He escapes the first attempt on his life in Monte Carlo and hides out serving as a chauffeur for the married Barbara (Lola Albright). Marc seems to have gotten into a bigger mess when he finds that Barbara's husband was murdered by her lover Vincent (Robert Oumansky), whom she is now hiding in her chateau. Barbara is planning to pass Marc off as her lover, hoping he will be knocked off by the authorities rather than Vincent. Attempting to save Marc -- or just complicating matters -- is Barbara's niece Melinda (Jane Fonda), who has fallen in love with Marc. If Marc plays his cards right, he may be able to get out of his uncomfortable predicament. Cinematographer Henri Decae also worked with Fonda on Roger Vadim's 1964 La Ronde -- a film wherein Fonda was granted a great deal more exposure. ~ Kristie Hassen, All Movie Guide

Former Hollywood musical director (and erstwhile government spy) Boris Morros was one of the producers of the British Tale of Five Cities. Bonar Colleano stars as British soldier Bob Mitchell, who has picked up American habits and speech patterns while employed in the U.S. Suffering from amnesia, Mitchell is led to believe that he is an American GI, though of course no records exist to verify this. Mitchell's confusion prompts a Manhattan-based magazine to launch a search for Bob's true identity, a search leading inexorably to the girls he left behind during WW II. The "five cities" visited during this exploratory journey are Rome, Berlin, Vienna, Paris, and London; Mitchell's Roman sweetheart is played by Gina Lollobridgida, while his Viennese amour is Eva Bartok. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Following a three-year suspension from filmmaking after his Le Corbeau (1943) was judged too critical of his native France, director Henri-Georges Clouzot returned with this thriller that's equal parts crime drama and character study. Suzy Delair stars as Jenny Lamour, an ambitious music hall singer who wants to be a star and is willing to befriend the lecherous old men who ogle her act, inspiring the jealousy of Jenny's husband Maurice Martineau (Bernard Blier). One particular fan of Jenny's is a wealthy financial backer who extends repeated invitations to the entertainer to join him at fine restaurants and his expansive mansion. Armed with a gun, Maurice goes to the estate to confront his rival one night but discovers that the master of the house is already dead, his wife having smashed a bottle of champagne over his head to stave off a sexual advance. Soon, a gruff but dedicated detective, Inspector Antoine (Louis Jouvet) is on the case, with Maurice taking the heat for Jenny. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

With his business in the doldrums, travel agent Grandpa Piuff (Sinoel) comes up with a cute gimmick. Why not book customers on a "surprise" voyage, with no set itinerary or destination? Vacationers are delighted with the notion, and before long a group of tourists and sightseers have embarked on a journey to goodness-knows-where. Their revelry is threatened by the wicked machinations of rival travel agent Grosbois (Rene Bourbon) and larcenous political insurrectionist Mikhail (Etienne Decroux). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Jacques Becker's Antoine et Antoinette bears echoes of the early-talkie Rene Clair classic Le Million. Roger Pigaut plays Antoine, a foreman in a bookbinding factory, while Claire Maffei portrays his salesgirl wife Antoinette. The story gets under way when a valuable lottery ticket is lost, sending hero and heroine into a tizzy. Before a happy ending can be attained, Antoine and Antoinette come in contact with a wide variety of supporting characters, many of whom have a vested interest in that ticket. By filming his story against a backdrop of actual locations and realistically appointed studio sets, co-writer/director Jacques Beckerhas transformed this wafer-thin comedy romance into an encapsulation of the Parisian working class. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Provincial garage owner Jacques Dumesnil is the target of Rumeurs in this French psychological melodrama. When a prostitute is murdered, Dumesnil is immediately suspected of the crime. The police have no real case against him, but this means little in the court of public opinion. As a consequence of the pressure brought to bear against him, Dumesnil is moved to contemplate a second murder, with pretty Jany Holt as the intended victim. An unpleasant story with unpleasant characters, Rumeurs isn't helped much by the lackluster direction of Jacques Daroy. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
